A character in Memphis Gods, a Scion of Hel.

Background[edit]

Growing up Nathan always had an interest in death and was always more interested in the dead in the living. His father was a mortician and Nathan was exposed to death regularly as he grew up. Instead of following in his father's footsteps he decided to go to Med school and eventually became a coroner. His Visitation occurred when the body of another Scion ended up on his autopsy table. He had died in an attempt to foil a titanspawn plot and Nathan was tasked with finishing the job by his mother. Since proving himself, he has been mostly off the front lines, his medical knowledge being of more use than his martial abilities.

Visitation[edit]

“The victim is a white male, approximately 25, the cause of death appears to be three jagged wounds along the abdomen.” Nathan speaks into a recorder as he leans in to more closely examine the John Doe's wounds. “It appears to be some sort of animal attack, but I can't tell what exactly. There are defensive woun-” He gets cut off as the power flickers for a second before going out completely. When the emergency lights come on Nathan is not alone.

Standing in the shadows, perhaps in more darkness than there should be, is a woman. In the darkness Nathan can make out little more than her silhouette. “Hey! Who are you? You aren't supposed to be here.”

“Quiet boy. There is much to discuss and I don't have time for your questions.” The voice that emanated from the women sent shivers down his spine and immediately quieted any objections he had to her presence. “I am your mother, Hel. My divine ichor runs through your veins. Their will be time for you to learn the details of your heritage later. What you need to know now is that there is a war being waged on a level you can't even comprehend. You have a small but significant part to play.” With that she stepped out from the shadows, revealing her horrifying visage, half fair but the other half a horrifying putrefied mass of dead flesh. To horrified by what he sees to react, Nathan does nothing to move out of the way when she grasps both of his hands.

He feels a burning cold sear both his hands. Fumbling to remove his latex gloves he finds both hands marked. The left hand bears a black rune and the hand looks pale, almost corpse-like. The right has a dark blue and the hand itself emanates cold. “I have awakened your power, those will give you power over death and the cold.” She answers the question she knows Nathan is going to ask.

Nathan himself can barely absorb what has just happened ,”What am I supposed to do know?”

“Fight, I'll have missions for you, and it is only a matter of time before our enemies target you. To that end I am granting you access to him.” She says pointing to the body on the autopsy table. Nathan looks towards the corpse confused. “What do you mean him?” Turning around his question is answered for him. Standing next to Hel is a transparent figure identical to the one on the table and he is now holding a large ax. “This is Micheal, another of my Scions, he will be your guide and can answer any questions you have on your new situation. This belonged to him, it will provide you a connection to him.” She says handing him the ax.

“I must go now. Micheal will relay any messages I have.” She says before stepping back into the shadows, which intensify until she can't be seen at all. It is then that the electricity returns, banishing the shadows and revealing a once again empty room.

The whole thing was over so fast Nathan wouldn't believe it had happened if not for the things Hel had left behind.

Nathan looks awkwardly between the ghost and the corpse. “I suppose I should finish up your autopsy now. At least you could tell me what it was that killed you. Although I have a felling I can't include it in the actual report.” With that he puts on a new set of gloves and goes to finish the autopsy, he'd worry about all this other craziness after.
