Background:

May '05

It all would have been fine, if it hadn't been for Alice.

College was great! Up all night reading poetry, holding midnight rallies to protest the war in Vietnam, and making plans for the ultimate commune while keeping a windowbox full of "Medicine Herbs". Life was good once. Even spent a few months "Experimenting". I met Alice in a bar that way, and we spent a night discussing the revolution of the proletariat, and the existence of God in all earthly religions before falling into bed. It was good, but oddly hard to remember, and in the morning I was alone. She left a note, "I like your spirit..."

Dammit.

My spirit, sure. Flakey bitch. One whirling romantic week later, and then I was gulping her blood, and feeling myself die.

And then she didn't understand why I wasn't THANKFUL for being... gah, makes me mad just to remember. She kept whining about how she'd gone against the rules of the Lancea to bring me over... Big deal! I wasn't even Catholic!

Two weeks later she cut me loose.

Took me a while to figure out what to do with myself, and I made a lot of mistakes and burned a lot of bridges. I was weak, and people will hurt you, just because you're weak.

Not anymore.

Y'know we can exercise? It takes years instead of months to build muscle tissue, but it's still doable. Maybe it's a Daeva thing, I don't know. Gorge on blood every now and then and cut loose, it can be done. I bulked up, and something in my undead body decided to help me out with it.

It took awhile, but I wasn't weak.

I also learned that I could talk up a storm... And I only got better at it, as I learned more about Kindred society. The Carthians snapped me up like a hostess fruit pie, and I've found a good home with them. Guess all my training for the counterculture "Revolution" was good for something... I learned how to trade favors, and channel rage against the MAN. Got a reputation as a bit of a prodigy. Wasn't much, but it helped. It REALLY helped when the shitstorm came down, and someone managed to land a whole buncha hunters in our lap. St. Louis (My original town) had five deaths in the first month, and the prince panicked. Paranoid bastard decided to thin down a few of his enemies, go to extremes to cover the breach. Oh, there was nothing official, but EVERYONE knew he and his crew were settin' up information leaks on the Carthians and the youngers for the hunters to take down, while the REAL monsters scurried for cover. Fuckin' Invictus. The establishment's the same, living or dead...

I knew it was only a matter of time, so I blew town. My boss got me a ticket to Chicago, and that's worked out pretty well.. Sure, it's got the usual crew of bastards charge, but there's no open war on the Carthians up here. Worth a shot...

June '05

Well, I'm moved through as of this journal entry. The local Chapter boss for the Carthians was happy to have me, especially when he learned that I'm pretty good at Auspex. He's pulled a few strings and got me a job at O'hare, watching for trouble and mystic crap that comes into town. And I have to tell you, some pretty weird crap comes through there...

I've got a small, one-story house in a grungy suburban neighborhood. It's seen better days, but I've got enough locks on that sucker that no one gives me any trouble. It's also got a windowless basement, which is pretty nice. Unfortunately, it cost me most of my liquid assets, so I'm kind of broke. Fortunately, I don't need much. Not of anything that cash can buy, anyway.

The Prince is a GOD! Black, smart as hell, and with the stature of a king. If I was still living, I'd be nude in two seconds, and in his bed in three. Damn, if only he weren't Invictus... Still, he's pretty moderate for a stuffed-shirt. The Carthians have it good in this town, but I wish more people would realize it. Might have to point that out, when the time comes...

September '05

Figured out that I wouldn't get much of anything accomplished on my own. And seeing all the weird stuff that comes through O'Hare has given me an idea. From chatting with a couple of the more friendly mages that share the Airport watch with us, I've learned that there are occult items and tricks out there that anyone can use. Trouble is, if you're not careful, you can set yourself up for some serious hurt that way.

So, I've hooked up with a couple of other occult-chasers among the local Kindred. I checked them out beforehand, and they're a pretty trustworthy bunch. Good reputation. I fill the role of smiling and making people fall over themselves to do stuff for us, mostly. Occasionally I've had to fill the role of "Person who punches through drywall." No big deal, really.

Unlife is pretty good, so far. Hopefully we can turn up something interesting, and/or useful...

March '06

Had a weird experience last night. They closed O'hare down due to a terrorist scare, and sent all of us Baristas home early. Not sure what was going on there, but I was hungry and it was Friday night so I decided to go exploring, and see if I could grab a bite to eat from someplace new. I stuck to Carthian territory, though. That's one reason I like us Free spirits, we're a lot less touchy about feeding grounds.

Ran into a fairly stupid fratboy in a bar called Bootlegger's, and that's when things went to hell. Didn't want him groping me any longer than was necessary, so I took a hit from him in the alley. Turns out he was higher than a kite on mixed drugs and alcohol. By the time I sort out what's what, this amazonian woman is telling me to get out of her territory. Evidently I've got the fangs out, 'cause she identifies me correctly. I take a look at her aura, and it turns out she's something else entirely...

I was a mess. She took pity on me, and hauled me inside to dry off before anyone saw me. We got to talking, and she seems alright. Turns out she's a "Yuratha", "Child of Luna, blood of the Wolf", something like that. I guessed werewolf, and tried to inquire, but she never said yes or no to it.

Probably werewolf. I saw people with similar auras back in St. Louis, and they were always walking around in groups, all had an edge of trouble to them...

And then I noticed she was trying to grill me for information. Like she was trying to figure out how easy it'd be to find and kill me. Me! Goddamit. Monsters are all the same, whether they suck blood or grow fur.

I lost my temper, which I shouldn't have done. Been doing that a lot more, lately. I told her off and stomped out, but not before giving her my cell phone number. No matter how mad you are, you don't turn down a contact like that.

The next time I see her, I won't be high on drugged blood. Maybe then we can talk. Or maybe she'll try to rip my head off.

Her name's Autumn. And y'know, I think I actually like her.

But, I'll never forget, she's another monster too...

'''Background:'''

Trent is the descendant of Russian immigrants who changed their name to Markham in the late 40's to avoid the growing anti-russian sentiment in the US. Trent who was entering his teenage years when his family changed their name always viewed it as a disgrace and an abandonment of their history. The attempt at hiding their background in the end proved futile. During a visit to New York in the early 50's, Trent's parents disappeared leaving him alone in a big city with nowhere to turn. Determining what happened to his parents soon became his obsession. His search for facts about his parents soon revealed that they had been accused of spying and were in fact attempting to flee the United States. In addition to revealing the truth of his parents occupation, his investigation also introduced him to certain elements of New York's underground. It was not long before he found a use for himself as a courier of information for several Russian organized crime factions.

Trent found that he had a talent for finding valuable information and keeping it secret until its revelation was a benefit to him. This talent led him to the service of several powerful figures, not the least of which was a Mekhet involved in the trading of items of value to those interested in the occult. After much service, this Mekhet eventually embraced Trent out of a need for a loyal lackey. Well instructed by his sire in many aspects of the occult and the Requiem, Trent soon found his servile position undesirable and sought to leave New York and his sire.

It is this that led him to Chicago and an early introduction to The Circle of the Crone with which he has a common interest in the occult. Tonight he finds himself a member of the Chorus hoping to find his place in the Second City.

Joe Greenier, who goes by Green, was embraced in the farmland outside of Gary, Indiana in 1998. He is the childe of either Charles or Mirella. Charles and Mirella were embraced in the 50's by a very old vampire that Green's never met, were brother and sister in life, and were both batshit crazy. Charles got dusted by some...thing in southern Illinois in 2000 and Mirella went to ground not long after.

Since then, Green's roamed around and survived night to night, until 2004 when he had the good fortune to meet Myriam in Chicago's south suburbs. Myriam introduced him to Rowen and got him hooked up with the Acolytes, and also introduced him to an enterprising Mekhet named Trent.

Green loves the city; compared to the nomad's existence in the wild, he's got it real easy. He's afraid of getting complacent though, so the Circle's philosophy of strength through struggle appeals to him. It's a good thing Trent has plans; otherwise, Green would be bored to tears.

Green cares nothing for politics; he still has the nomad's mindframe of living hand-to-mouth. He hangs out in the city's parks, feeding on deer, strays, pushers, and pimps. He has no haven, but is good at finding bolt holes and uses Haven of Soil quite frequently. He dresses unobtrusively in old jeans and a sweatshirt. Green is of average height and weight and has tangled dirty-blonde hair.

Alexander Maxwell, a forensic expert in life, and called in to investigate a series of unusual killings, in which the victims were killed in an odd fashion.

Through good investigation and careful analysis, he found the culprit, who happened to be a Mekhet who had made pacts with some sort of dark power, and snapped. Of course, he was impressed enough to bring Morrell across after killing him. Naturally Maxwell immediately frenzied, and there was a struggle, which my character won. As his sire fell into Torpor one of the Kindred who had been tracking him arrived, and calmed Maxwell down.

After getting a jarred explanation out of him, the new arrival was impressed enough to take Maxwell under his wing as an adopted childe, and to explain what had happened.

Upon coming to terms with what had happened, he sought to uncover more of what made Kindred the way they were, and to fight the impulses of the Beast he now struggled with. And so, once he learned of the Ordo Dracul, he sought to join, to find a way to understand himself.

Currently, Maxwell is trying to combine the scientific and rational approach he was trained under with the magical nature of Kindred disciplines, in order to find a way to fight the Beast.
Given what his sire was engaged in, my character is naturally concerned about those who seek to dabble with dark powers, which naturally makes him suspicious of the Circle of the Crone. However, he’s willing to accept that most members of that sect are searching for answers, in their own way. He keeps an eye on the occult world as well as ties to his former life, in case something similar happens again.

Aethyron:

History/Personality

James Cahill was born in a small town in Nova Scotia (that's on Canada's east coast, for those not too familiar with geography up here). The town wasn't exactly the most interesting place in the world, unless you had an affection for fishing, so James took to spending a great deal of time exploring. Hiking, camping, a little bit of rock climbing...James did it all. From an early age, he'd spend hours wandering the surrounding wilderness. He never really seemed to be interested in looking for anything in particular, but always seemed to find something that interested him. One day it was a dead bird. This seemingly insignifcant event (after all, how many of us haven't seen a dead bird?) deeply affected the person James became. From a year young age, he had an understanding of the value, and fragility of life that many people don't acquire until their lives are almost over. Rather than being scared of dying, as most young children might be, James became absolutely fascinated with it. Not in a creepy 'lets squish lots of bugs for fun' way. He saw it, even then, as a great mystery of life, an unanswerable question, an unsolvable riddle. He developed a fascination with life and death, their relationship, their transition, and their epilogue, and as he entered high school he began to study countless texts on the subject, both from a scientific and philosophical perspective.

James was not the most enthusiastic student the world has ever seen. He never really found the environement too stimulating. He did, however, spend an undue amount of time in the school library. At this point in his life, he had seen most of what there was to see in and around his small town, and he now turned his attention to more academic pursuits, devouring a huge amount of information on a wide variety of subjects. There was no real method to this reading; rather, he would simply read whatever seemed interesting to him during a given week. Despite his relative disinterest in school, he made it out with reasonably good marks, and earned himself entrance into the University of Toronto. However, he elected to defer his acceptance for a year, and spent the time backpacking across Europe, exploring what the world had to offer him.

He set off on this journey with no real goal in mind, beyond seeing what the world had to offer. He certainly had no grandiose idea of 'finding himself.' Much to his surprise, he not only ended up finding out more about himself than he'd ever know, but he ended up discovering the answer to a question that he'd never really known he had, one that had been lurking at the back of his mind since the day he had the brainpower to ask it: "What else is out there?". It was during this time that James experienced his first change. It was shortly after this that he encountered the first creature like him, a Bone Shadow named Brian. Brian taught him the ways of the Uratha, and the ways of the spirit. It was the latter that particularly fascinated him. Here was a whole other world, full of ancient creatures posessing untold knowledge. It was like showing a little kid the world's biggest candy store. He travelled with Brian for several months, learning everything he could from him, and, particularly, from any spirits the pair encountered.

Eventually, his cross continent journey ended, and he returned home to attend university. He might be a werewolf, but he'd be damned if that let him get in the way of his education. He saw university as a place where he could study that which genuinely interested him, and, after dabbling in several fields, ended up graduating with a double major in Life Sciences and Philosophy. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was accepted to Med School at the University of Chicago. He attended for two years, before electing to drop out, due to a dissatisfaction with the nature of the education (he found himself frequently busy with things that didn't interest him) and, more importantly, due to an inability to juggle university and the burden of being an Uratha. Following this decision, he procured a job in the city Morgue as an attendant, where he has been working for (1 year + the number of months between the most recent june and whatever month the campaign begins in). It can be tedious at times, but he finds that it allows him a great deal of time to study the dead, even though he has come to seriosuly doubt how much can be learned from physical remains (the real answers, he has come to largely believe, are found in the spirit), plus on slow days he can often find time to read on the job - always a plus. These benefits make up for the occasional tedium. In his downtime, he tries to spend time whenever possible conversing an interacting with the spirit world. He rarely is looking for any particular piece of advice/information/whatever, but this never matters. In his own words: "The biggest problem with most Uratha, my own tribemates included, is that they never bother to talk with a spirit unless they're looking for something in particular. They have so much to teach us, if we'd just shut the fuck up and listen to whatever they're saying every now and again. You should try it sometime. You'd be surprised."

James can, to the casual observer, come across as fairly grim. He tends to keep to himself, and keep quiet, unless he has a reason otherwise. This is, however, a misinterpretation. James is a rather positive fellow, believing in the value of life, and carpe-ing the diem, and all that good stuff. He's just not loud about it. Nor is he the type to make friends at the drop of a hat, but if he choses to become associated with anyone, he is the most devoted and loyal friend/packmate/comcpanion you could ask for. This will, however, not stop him from questioning anything an everything one of his companions, even his pack Alpha, might say. James is rarely the first to propose and idea/plan/whatever, but he's always the first to point out a flaw in someone else's. He does this out of no sense of malice, but simply out of the belief that it must be done, and that if he doesn't do it, no one will.

Unlike many lovers of learning, James is hardly the type to sit around all day with his head burried in a book. To him, much about life can be learned from experiencing it, and more can be learned from a person than from words on a page (though words on a page can be extremely valueable if an expert on a particular topic is unavailable). James has a strong, although quiet, passion for a life, and a very genuine personality, characterstics that many people find endearing. He finds people fairly easy to get along with, and can often convince them to open up about things (he tends not to care what), usually without resorting to deception, though he does have a talent for misdirection and confusion when he choses to employ it.
James was born in a small town in Nova Scotia. The town wasn't exactly the most interesting place in the world, unless you had an affection for fishing, so James took to spending a great deal of time explore the surrounding geography. Hiking, camping, a little bit of rock climbing...James did it all. From an early age, he developed a passion for exploration and discovery. He never really seemed to be interested in looking for anything in particular. He'd wander the woods for hours aimlessly, until he found something, anything, that piqued his interest. One of the most critical events of this period in his life took place while he was still in elementary school. He was wandering in the woods near his house, and happened upon a dead bird. Nothing out of the ordinary, but it was his first encounter with a dead animal. He was fascinated by it. Over the years, he developed a fascination with life, death, mortality, and the fragility of humanity, both from a scientific and philosophical perspective.

James was not the most enthusiastic student the world has ever seen. He never really found the environement too stimulating. He did, however, spend an undue amount of time in the school library (the only place nearby with a reasonable collection of books that interested him) reading about whatever his interest of the week was. Despite his relative disinterest in school, he made it out with reasonably good mark, and earned himself entrance into the University of Toronto. However, he elected to defer his acceptance for a year, and spent the time backpacking across Europe, exploring what the world had to offer him.

He set off on this journey unsure of what he was hoping to find, but with no grand idea of 'finding himself.' Much to his surprise, he ended up finding both. It was during this time that James experienced his first change. It was shortly after this that he encountered the first creature like him, a Bone Shadow named Brian. Brian taught him the ways of the Uratha, and the ways of the spirit. James finally began to realize what he'd been looking for all these years. He travelled with Brian for several months, learning everything he could from him, and, particularly, from any spirits the pair encountered.

Eventually, his cross continent journey ended, and he returned home to continue his education. He might be a werewolf, but he'd be damned if that let him get in the way of his education. He saw university as a place where he good genuinely pursue what interested him, and, after trying some different things, ended up graduating with a double major in Life Sciences and Philosophy. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was accepted to Med School at the University of Chicago. He attended for two years, before electing to drop out, due to a dissatisfaction with the nature of the education (he found himself frequently busy with things he has no interest in) and, more importantly, due to an inability to juggle university and the burden of being an Uratha. Following this decision, he procured a job in the city Morgue as an attendant, where he has been working for over a year. It can be tedious at times, but he finds that it allows him more insight into the nature of death (and thus its relationship with life and the great beyond), plus on slow days he can often find time to read on the job - always a plus. These benefits make up for the occasional tedium. He currently lives in a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. It means that the trek into work is longer, but it keeps him closer to nature. He tries to spend time whenever possible conversing an interacting with the spirit world. He rarely is looking for any particular piece of advice/information/whatever, but this never makes a difference.

He's just not the happy-go-lucky free spirit type.Nor is he the type to make friends at the drop of a hat, but if he choses to become associated with anyone, he is the most devoted and loyal friend/packmate/comcpanion you could ask for.
