A catalogue of the unusual toxins, weapons, and devices that [[Leaf Shakes the Wind]] has brought to bear in his duties as [[An Oathsworn Circle|the Circle's]] Dagger of Heaven.

==Drugs & Poisons==

===Catstongue===

Catstongue is a small, pink-flowered plant whose petals are very rough in texture. It grows in the wild in the forests of the East and is cultivated in many places on the Blessed Isle for it's alchemical uses.

'''Catstongue Powder'''

'''Damage:'''  5*/minute     '''Toxicity:'''  4     '''Tolerance:'''  --/--     '''Penalty:'''  -4     '''Resources:'''  2

<nowiki>* No actual damage done</nowiki>

Catstongue Powder is made from drying and grinding the petals of the flower (it takes about 2 flowers to create a single dose; each plant usually has clumps of 6-20 flowers). The powder can be used in several ways: It dissolves quickly and tastelessly into any liquid and can easily added to most foods. It can be held in the hand and blown into the face of a target (getting into the victim's system both through inhalation and contact with the eyes). It can also be placed in small "bullets" made of clay, porcelain, cloth, leather, or eggshells which can be thrown by hand or with a sling and are designed to break open upon contact with the target. Catstongue powder is a narcoleptic compound, sending its users into deep, dreamless sleep. Instead of taking damage, failure on the normal (Stamina + Resistance) roll for this poison causes the victim to fall unconscious and immediately enter the Inactive state if currently engaged in combat.

'''Catstongue Sap'''

'''Damage:'''  10*/Action     '''Toxicity:'''  3     '''Tolerance:'''  --/--     '''Penalty:'''  -8     '''Resources:'''  2

<nowiki>* No actual damage done</nowiki>

Catstongue Sap is made from boiling down a mixture of water and the crushed leaves and stems of the plant (one plant is usually enough for 4-10 doses, depending on its size). The sap is typically applied to darts or other weapons; it can be dissolved in hot liquids, but the process takes several minutes and adds a strong astringent taste which all but the most unaware individuals will notice. Catstongue sap is a noted paralytics poison that slows and weakens those who succumb to it, often rendering them completely immobile. If a person loses more dice from this poison's Penalty rating than they have to roll, they are considered paralyzed and immediately enter the Inactive state if currently engaged in combat.

==Weapons==

===Bolas===

'''Speed:'''  5     '''Accuracy:'''  -1     '''Damage:'''  +1B     '''Rate:'''  2     '''Range:'''  20     '''Minimums:'''  Dex 3, Throw 3

A chord, thong, or chain with weights on each end, the bola is throw for the purpose of entangling a target. While generally non-lethal, when thrown by a skilled user, the weights on the ends of the bola have been known to break bone upon impact. When a target is successfully hit by a bola, she suffers the same effects as from a hold maneuver '''(Exalted pg. 157-158)'''. Freeing oneself from the bola is a Speed 4 ([Strength or Dexterity] + Athletics) action against a difficulty equal to the number of successes the attacker obtained on his Attack roll. As in a normal hold maneuver, anyone hit by a bola may still use reflexive Charms and actions or Charms designed to be used while in a clinch (at the ST's discretion), but have no defense against further attacks until freed.

In addition, the following special attacks can be used with bolas:

'''Take down''' - By taking an additional -1 external penalty to their attacks, bola throwers can use the weapon to knock their foes prone. If the attack is successful, the target must make a (Dexterity + Athletics) roll at a difficulty equal to the number of successes on the attack. Failure indicates that the defender has fallen prone in addition to the normal effects of being hit by the bola. If the target performed a Move or Dash action in the previous tick or is otherwise in a situation that the ST determines to require delicate balance, the take down is automatic unless the defender can use a Charm or stunt to negate it.

'''Choke''' - For a -3 external penalty, the bola user may aim for the neck of the opponent, rather than the body or legs. Doing so negates the normal effects of a bola, but instead begins to choke the victim. This does damage in the same manner as a Crush attack '''(Exalted pg. 157)''', and if the victim does not free herself soon enough, it can also cause suffocation '''(Exalted pg. 130)'''.

Beneath the soft murmurs of the other patrons in Monkey’s Third Song, [[Cynis Lachid and Layochi|Cynis Lachid]] spoke.

“I do not know his name, but his home was in the land of the dead. I do not know what message he carried, but the companions of his heart are marked by oblivion.”

It bothered [[Leaf Shakes the Wind]] more than he would ever let on to hear the young dragon blood speak in full sentences without his sister completing his statements for him. As their Essences diverged into different paths, their individuality grew. It made them stronger, and he had long wished for one to show some spark of personality that was not shared by the other. Now that it was occurring, though, it felt as disquieting as their uniformity had when he first met them. He sipped his tea.

“And he was on his way to this [[Fenghuang Temple]]?”

Lachid nodded, waiting for a moment as a serving boy brought another small pot for them to sample. “Yes. We met him by chance while distributing leaflets for the [[The Empty Garden|temple]]. He looked hungry, so I offered him some of my bread. He thanked me but refused, saying he had no time for such things.” Layochi maneuvered the pot deftly between her brother’s gesturing hands, steam now rising from the three cups before them.

“Our hands only touched for a moment, but I reflexively used the Revelation of Associates Hunch, and in that instance I knew three things about him: He has a lover named Isabel, and she must seize the bodies of other women for them to touch. He has a father named Albinus, and he bleeds nightly to feed him or suffers the consequences. And he has a master named the [[Abbot of Hunger and Dust]], who has taught him to transcend the needs of his flesh in service to the Void.”

Leaf Shakes the Wind placed his empty cup on the table again and looked over the bamboo railing towards the hills of the southwest. The silence stretched among them for several minutes before Layochi finally broke it. “Brother, we should be returning soon. [[Goruk|Abbot Goruk]] will miss us if we are not at prayer.” Lachid nodded and rose to his feet as she turned to look at Leaf. “Sifu, when will we return home to the [[Plum Blossom Retreat]]?”

Leaf smiled. “Soon. I have been too long without your company already, but I fear you will need all the skill the Immaculates can give you for the coming conflict, along with any allies that you can bring us. [[Varsi]] is a prime battleground now in our war with [[Mask of Winters|the Mask]], and there is no one else I would trust to oversee it.”

“In the meantime, I will investigate this Fenghuang Temple myself. [[Storm of Amber]] has been at me to find something of the Mask’s that he can destroy to make himself feel better. If your discovery produces fruit, this may satisfy him, for now at least.”

The three of them stood from their cushions in unison. “Do you have any other orders for us, Sifu?”

Leaf thought for a moment. “Yes. Have a shipment of the third tea we drank delivered to [[God Crossing]]. [[Nameless Ravine]] will no doubt say that it is yedim piss, but secretly he will be pleased to at least have a new flavor of yedim piss to try.”
==Hide-And-Go-Seek==
"Found you."

[[Leaf Shakes the Wind]] laughed as he dropped from the branches of the dogwood, a few stray blossoms falling with him. "I guess you did."

He stretched slightly, relaxing limbs that had tightened after hours of stillness. "What does that make it now? Three out of seven?"

Alabaster Sunset's mandibles widened in what Leaf knew was a grin. "Four out of eight. We're even now. I'm learning your tricks."

"Oh?" Leaf raised an eyebrow. "I'll have to learn some new ones then. I wouldn't want you to get bored."

Alabaster Sunset's body began to fold in on itself, segmented limbs joining, hard green carapace softening into sun-browned flesh. "Heh. Well, I'm sure you've still got something else up your sleeve. After all, what if I turn out to be a secret, deep-cover agent for [[Ma-Ha-Suchi]], and you have to put me down?" Alabaster Sunset leaned against the tree's trunk, her smile almost coy on her now-human face.

"In that case, I would be truly doomed, wouldn’t I?" Leaf caught a falling flower and twirled it idly in his fingers, the broad white petals shining in the late afternoon sun. “After all, I’ve turned my back on you at least a dozen times since [[Battle of Breaking Iron|Breaking Iron]]."

“And don’t think I haven’t thought of putting a spear into it from time to time.”

“You and half the [[Eye of Hiparkes]].” A petal dropped from his hands to the forest floor. “Only, you’d probably succeed, if you put your mind to it.”

“Feh. I don’t think the old goat-wolf himself could put you down.”

Leaf Shakes the Wind put his hand over his heart and faked a short sniffle. “Alabaster Sunset, I think that’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me.”

The Lunar laughed. “Somehow, I’m not surprised.”

She pushed herself away from the tree. “Ready for round nine?”

Figured out what to do with Charlotte. I waited until she dropped by the apartment. Then I dragged her under the scanner in the bathroom (I keep a scanner in the bathroom, ok?); mine is set up to scramble, which happens sometimes in poorly insulated areas like the one I've chosen as my home. Shoved her under the shower head where I indicated in a mock simulation of her voice "Let's have some fun!"

So there we are, both fully clothed, getting completely soaked. I have the water on cold because yeah, it bugs me, but it will bug her even more. Then I tell her I know her name, her address, her cred numbers...the works. She makes a small gasping noise. I don't smile because I'm not happy I've scared her, but since my face is expressionless I'm pretty sure she doesn't know how much I'm not enjoying this. Then I say that she needs to stop calling and stop visiting. She needs to tell her uppers that I am ok on my own, that the cop and the crazy guy can watch me just fine. That if I had wanted to do something catastrophic I would have done so by now, and that I prefer being alone to being with someone paid to be my friend. Also, that I will check out every single person every sent to me. No matter how good they are, I will be better. Because to be who I am, I have to be. To get the world I want with actual friendship, love, and attention, I have to at least believe it's possible that people befriend me because they aren't afraid of what I might do.

Then I let her go. She stammers a minute and I see pity. I know what pity looks like. My lips become a thin white line and she shuts up. I tell her if she says anything--tries to make me feel like she's doing this herself, or that she took the money as a bonus and being my friend is so gosh darned fun that she can't contain herself, that she should take the stairs for the rest of her life, which won't be long. Because I have access to food processors, vehicle controls, the works. I don't tell her I will kill her, because I am not sure that I will. I let her imagination drive her, though, and she turns white, shivering more now than she was when she noticed the cold water.

I call her a bitch, something that seems to piss women off when Scratch says it, and then I exit the bathroom. She slowly follows. She asks if I have a towel. I tell her no. It's my apartment. I turn up the heat normally when I'm done until things are dry or I use my blanket. I tell her she needn't stay to get dry, though, and, soaking, she walks out of my apartment with a curious look on her face.

I'm certain she's wondering if I always shower in my clothes.

Charlotte called again. Charlotte is not her real name. It took a lot of walking, but eventually I found an archology Institution that knows that face and then was able to cross reference for the name and her data. Her actual name is Robin...I've stored her registration number and codes. Robin is set up as a member of Upper Level security Enforcement...she is actually a recruiter, though.

Robin used to scrape between paychecks. Since she started being my "friend" (I doubt the Agency has really hired anyone else to babysit any of the others like they have me), Robin now floats at least four figures between paychecks. Apparently, my friendship is a lucrative place to be.

This is just evidence to me that the Agency--I'm pretty sure whatever we're called is a blind, hello--may not know what actually happened to me, but has a real good guess. I'm pretty sure the others have been threatened to comply. I was more than happy to come on board and use the facillities for my research, and to try to do some good in the world. Those were the best lures you could use on me, and confirming the overly-friendly recruiter is being paid to worry about me supports that.

There are things I won't admit to myself; I know that. I also know there are parts of me I can't even access. I also know that a great deal of curiosity exists in the world about those parts of my brain. I'm fairly certain that at least one megacorp's profits for the next twenty years might hinge on what can be recovered. Although, if the Agency were working with the Corp, then I am pretty sure I wouldn't be walking around and free to stalk my recruiter.

But it does explain why I haven't been threatened. That would work for some people, and not so much for me. I have so little and, at the same time, so much to lose.

Anyway, Robin--well, I guess I should call her Charlotte--tried to reach me again. I screen my calls. So far I haven't answered her's. She wants to go out and do something "fun." Her voice goes up on the end of the word in what seems an unnatural way. I haven't mentioned my true fun, but I have dissapeared for a few days at a time pursuing the scroungers in the lower levels, which seems to make her really nervous.

Anyway. I'm going to have to return a call or she will show up at my place. She doesn't like my artifact collection nor my reading collection. She thinks its junk. We're probably both right. But its mine, and I like it. I don't like that she knows where I live, but that can't be avoided. I don't think her job is so much to watch me--that's way more Scratch's job at work, which he is happy to crow about to anyone who feels anything when he says it. It's more to make sure that I don't, you know, pull the fire alarm on the archology on a larger level. I'm certain the fact I spend so much time to myself has not gone unnoticed by the powers-that-be, and everyone is concerned what a mind like mine might do if not tempered with the influence of other now and again.

I think that's just evidence, more, really, of how little they know about me.

I think about people all the time. How what happened to me should never happen to anyone else. I like to make strangers smile. I like to make bad people stop hurting non bad people. It's a simplistic philosophy, but it works for me. I'm not as...developed...in certain ways as the rest of the team. So my philosophy isn't, either. But these people are so used to double blinds and fakes that when someone tries to be simple, they look for complex.
Contacts are suppliers of information. They're not as reliable as Allies and don't have the loyalty of Servants or Henchmen. but typically, they're well-informed or can find someone else who is. Most Contacts have a key of some sort--a method of exchange which your character would know. Magnum, PI used to bribe his old Navy contact, Mac with donuts. Maybe your character pays money for good information... Contacts aren't all-knowing. And it's always possible that the contacts you do have just plain can't help you out...

Each contact should have noted a dominant area of involvement. Such a character might have insight into the Russian mafia, or the corporate culture of a specific business, or perhaps a local police precinct...
==Thematic Batteries==
'''IMPORTANT NOTE:''' The idea of “thematic batteries” is lifted wholesale from [http://kallistipress.com/?q=node/9 Full Light, Full Steam], Joshua BishopRoby’s excellent game of Victorian space opera. The use of it in this game and on this wiki is not intended to claim ownership of the idea, but rather to pay homage and acknowledge Joshua’s excellent design.

A thematic battery is a word or phrase which describes an aspect of the character’s personality, place in society, or role in the unfolding story. In order to be useful, a thematic battery must be a trait that can be both good and bad. You are always in control of your character’s thematic batteries. During play, you may elect to take a handicap to “charge” your thematic battery.

Each character gets two thematic batteries, and each battery may hold up to three charges at one time. Players are expected to roleplay the qualities of their given thematic batteries even when they are not being used to assign bonuses or penalties. A character who consistently acts contrary to one or more of his/her thematic batteries may be asked to change it to something more in line with the character’s general actions. As the name suggests, thematic batteries should be strongly respresentative of the primary themes for your character. The GM will view your thematic batteries as a primary factor when determining stories and events in the game, so be sure that the batteries you choose are truly events/characteristics/issues that you wish to explore long-term in the game.

'''Charging Thematic Batteries:''' When you are called on to make a roll and you feel your Thematic Battery is applicable to the situation, you may elect to charge your thematic battery by taking a penalty on the roll. For each “charge” added to the battery, you take a +3 difficulty penalty on the roll in question. Also, any critical failure that occurs on a roll related to your thematic battery, whether you chose it as a "charge" roll or not, automatically charges the appropriate thematic battery by 1. If you have multiple thematic batteries that could apply, you must choose only one to which to apply the charge. Charging a thematic battery does not make a roll a "critical failure", even if it pushes your roll total to 16 or higher. Only naturally rolls of 16 (both dice coming up as 8s) count as critical failures. Charges must be declared before the roll is made.

'''Discharging Thematic Batteries:''' Stored thematic charges may be used to improve rolls in a given situation. When called upon to make a roll appropriate to one of your thematic batteries, you may elect to add a -2 to your roll per charge spent. If you have a fully-charged thematic battery, you may also choose to discharge all three charges at once in order to re-roll a given roll, instead of adding -6 to it. You cannot mix and match charges from different batteries for this purpose; only a single battery with three full charges can allow a re-roll. Discharges may be declared after a roll is made.

'''Example Thematic Batteries:'''

* Street Punk

You are a product of the mean streets, alienated from general society by poverty and a dismissal of societal norms.

'''Charge by taking penalties on…''' Social interactions with authorities or members of upper-crust society, interaction with high technology that has not yet trickled down to street level, trying to be blend into an area where “your kind” wouldn’t normally be welcome.

'''Discharge to add a bonus to…''' Social interactions with misfits, outcasts, and other street denizens, attacks made unarmed or with low-tech weapons, hiding or going to ground in a dangerous or poverty-stricken area.

* Nose in a Book

Your mind is brilliant but constantly distracted by the ideas and thoughts that run through it.

'''Charge by taking penalties on…''' Noticing clues or activities going on around you, any social interaction, the obvious answer to a given question.

'''Discharge to add a bonus to…''' Providing esoteric or complex information or solutions to a given problem, figuring out a puzzle or unfamiliar piece of technology, impress someone with your brilliance in a social situation.

* Luddite

You believe mankind has become too dependent on technology to do things for him and therefore eschew it as much as possible in favor of doing things yourself.

'''Charge by taking penalties on…''' Any interaction with technology, social situations with people who find your beliefs quaint or silly, using a firearm or other high-tech weapon.

'''Discharge to add a bonus to…''' Any situation requiring self-reliance, use of antiquated tools or resources, an unarmed attack or defense.

* Supporting Character

You prefer to play a secondary role in most events, helping out and backing up someone else without making your character the center of attention.

'''Charge by taking penalties on...''' Any action for which you will receive praise or primary credit, any action where you are the primary focus, any action that only you are equipped to perform

'''Discharge to add a bonsu to...''' Any action you will not receive credit for, any action done to help/support another character, any action that makes someone else look good

'''Discharge to add a bonus to…''' Social interactions with misfits, outcasts, and other street denizens, attacks made unarmed or with low-tech weapons, hiding or going to ground in a dangerous or poverty-stricken area.
==Thematic Batteries==
'''IMPORTANT NOTE:''' The idea of “thematic batteries” is lifted wholesale from Full Light, Full Steam, Joshua BishopRoby’s excellent game of Victorian space opera.

'''Charging Thematic Batteries:'''  When you are called on to make a roll and you feel your Thematic Battery is applicable to the situation, you may elect to charge your thematic battery by taking a penalty on the roll. |}

'''Academics and Clubs:''' Tanaka Masaru transferred to Yamato High last year after spending two years in America. He was admitted to the school because he attended Yamato Middle School before leaving the country, but after he took the High School entrance exams, he was determined to be behind in his studies, putting him a grade behind the other students his age, a fact he is very sensitive about.

He does very well in his English class but does poorly in virtually every other subject, though he was considered a very bright student in his Middle School. Tanaka-kun is an excellent guitar player, and it was expected that he would join the Music Club this year. However, after attending a single orientation meeting he never returned, citing differences with its current president. Instead, he joined the Kung Fu Cooking Club. When asked why, he mumbled something about “training his hands” and “ultimate solo” and then grew quiet, refusing to answer any other questions about it.

'''Interests and Hobbies:''' Virtually all of Tanaka-kun's energy seems to go into his band “Broken Zodiac,” which he formed with students from several schools in the area within a month of returning to Japan. They've already placed in several local competitions, and rumors among the students say that there are several labels that have begun to show interest in their music. Tanaka-kun undergoes a startling transformation when he is on stage; the normally quiet, gentle boy becomes a boisterous, charismatic individual who holds the audience in the palm of his hand. His stage name is "Long" (Chinese for "Dragon"); the other members of the band share similar sobriquets, with the full roster being Sato "Hu" (Tiger) Aiko on rhythm guitar, Watanabe "Niu" (Ox) Kuro on bass guitar, Yoshida "Tu" (Rabbit) Noburu on keyboards, and Nakamura "Hou" (Monkey) Yoshiko on the drums. Tanaka-kun is the group's lead guitar player and primary vocalist.

'''Family History:''' Tanaka-kun’s father is a mid-level executive in a company that manufactures designer face plates for cell phones. Tanaka-kun initially moved with him to America when he was transferred to the offices there, but was sent back to Japan after two years when his father decided Tanaka-kun was getting into too much trouble. Tanaka-kun currently lives with his maternal grandmother in her sizable home in Tokyo. His father and mother divorced when he was very young, and his mother has not made any contact with him, his father, or even members of her own family in the intervening years. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

'''Rivals and Adversaries:''' Many of the students in the [[Yamato High Music Club|Music Club]] resent Tanaka-kun for his refusal to join their club. It is said that Jirumi-kun, the current president of the club, was in a band with Tanaka-kun in Middle School, before his move to America. There seems to be some bad blood between the two of them resulting from this, and members of the Music Club are often present at Broken Zodiac shows to heckle the band, though Jirumi-kun denies encouraging this. Tanaka-kun has also had several run-ins with the Furyo of Yamato High. Despite his normally reserved nature, he seems to have a highly-developed sense of justice and a soft spot for kids who can't protect themselves. More than once, he's inserted himself into situations where older, tougher students were shaking down or bullying others, coming to the aid of the victims. While his gendai budo has been strong enough that he has won most of these fights, the list of those who resent his interference grows each time it happens. Interestingly, when Tanaka-kun gets in a fight, his appearance and personality undergo a change that is remarkably similar to the personality that he wears when he is on stage.

'''Friends and Allies:''' The members of Broken Zodiac are Tanaka-kun's closest friends, though only one of them (Watanabe Kuro) attends Yamato High. The band has also begun to attract a small but loyal following among music fans in the Tokyo area who, while they cannot be considered friends of Tanaka-kun, are often willing to help him out when he needs it. Even among those who are not fans of his band, he is fairly well-liked; even in his more subdued states, he radiates a quiet sense of strength and leadership that attracts many of his peers.

'''Martial Arts:''' Tanaka-kun is known to be a practitioner of several different styles of martial arts.

'''Rivals and Adversaries:''' Many of the students in the Music Club resent Tanaka-kun for his refusal to join their club.

== Arcologies ==
The Japanese government built the first two arcologies in the mid 21st century. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Try2004 The Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_City_1000 Sky City 1000] pioneered the use of carbon nanotubes and robotic labor to build structures capable of housing an entire city of nearly 1,000,000 people in an area with a footprint of only a few kilometers.

Following the massive west coast earthquakes of 2032, the United States government and several private corporations worked in concert to create the Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle arcologies to replace the largely-destroyed metro areas they once occupied.

== Artificial Intelligence ==
True, independent Artificial Intelligence, as far as the public knows, does not exist. Limited slave AIs have existed for a number of years, however, used primarily in conjunction with robotics technology and computer security systems.

== Biotech ==

== Computers ==

== Cybernetics ==
Cybernetics, the science and industry of replacing organic components with mechanical ones, came into wide use largely due to military and government research, then slowly [http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/news-as-cyberpunk/prosthetics-in-the-mainstream-dolphins-bionic-women/ expanded into civilian use]. As refinements made cybernetics less bulky and more life-like, its use extended beyond mere limb replacement and into human enhancement. The final step towards what has become common cybernetics in the current day was the invention of nano-scale [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motor brownian motors] powered by the body's own bioelectricity.

Full body cybernetics are still largely the purview of the military and special police organizations. When legal civilian use does occur, it's usually among the wealthy as the result of severe injuries or illness or, in very rare cases, fashion. Of course, full-body, military grade cybernetics also see use among private security and criminal organizations.

==Information Technology==

== Nanotech ==

==Neural Interface==
Neuro-machine interface technology is considered by many to be the primary foundation of the last century’s advances. Cybernetics, computers, and information technology have all been shaped and perfected by the ability for man and machine to communicate directly with one another. Most commonly, the neural interface is used to interact with data in one’s surrounding environment. The sorts of tasks that hand-held computers, cell phones, and other portable electronic devices were once used to perform can all be accessed via neural interface now. Large portions of most major cities and arcologies now have features that can only be accessed via neural interface, with only the most basic menus and commands available via hand-held devices.

Neural interfaces are also used to control or enhance the usability of a wide variety of mechanical and electronic devices, from vehicles and computers to robots and even firearms. The speed and ease of use of these devices for neural interface-equipped individuals far outstrips that available to hand-held users.

== Power Sources ==

== Robotics ==
The most common uses of robotics in the modern day are construction and manufacturing. Remote-operated robots are also often used for work in situations or environments that are difficult or hazardous for humans to access. With the rise of slave-AI, however, the appearance of semi-autonomous robots in common society is growing rapidly, particularly among the wealthy. Such robots are capable of duplicating human intelligence and interactive capabilities to an astonishing degree, but (due as much to strict regulations as research and technological limitations) are not truly sentient, and have highly developed fail-safes that allow their actions to be easily overridden by human operators.
