Zaijian Honey Blues Year Two: What has changed?
Conceptually - anime down, wuxia up
Some of you might be familiar with the earlier incarnations of Zaijian Honey Blues and the other expressions of the Nihao Honey-verse, other might not. Safe to say that they were pretty wild games that took its´ parent game (Weapons of the Gods) as well as it anime influences pretty far - the students of the Black Crane counted a catgirl and a robot, for example, and one particulary epic storyline saw a whole district of Shen Zhou City destroyed, becoming a "shadowland" populated with ghosts and zombies.

With the advent of Legends of the Wulin, things have been toned down some; altough it shares the narrative of the "legendary China that never was", the game takes a lot more cues from the classic wuxia stories by giants such as Liang Yusheng, Jin Yong/Louis Cha and Gu Long. The mythological past of the land, where ghosts and spirits walked, is far away indeed - there might be a grain fo truth to them or it might just be stories that have grown with time, but safe to say that they won´t impact the game in any overt and meaningful manner. This, of course, affects Zaijian Honey Blues in turn.

This is not to say that we´re going to go all drab and boring on you, but simply that some of the crazier concepts such as androids with orbital rail gun-fu or god-weapons crackling with power are out the window so that we can focus on what is important here - conflict between humans with human desires. Wulin teens with Wulin teen desires at that, which ought to make it interesting! Following the lead from ZHB, all the things that are in the LotW book will probably exist in SZ City as well, in one form or the other; new Loresheets will supplement the material within the core book, but we´re still rocking the "City that never is" vibe. I´m convinced that you will find this exciting enough.

Story: Reconceptualizing or soft reboot?
Well, both. Neither. Maybe?

Some of the stories past is baggage that we don´t want to handle, mostly because they tend to edge into areas like immensely powerful God-Weapons and other stuff mentioned above. On the meta-level of ZHB the animated series, we´ve started animation in China instead of Japan and are all a little fuzzy on the exact letter of the law when it comes to copyright and IP and such, and since we´re not exclusively China-based we must actually care about that stuff! In the actual game, this means that we might be a little vague when referring to our past. Think of it like rings on the water; close to the characters and their intra-character relationships things are pretty clear, but the further away we get with indirect stories and the larger-scale stuff... things get kinda muddled. Just a little. Think about the future, eh? And be lucky that you get pants.

The characters themselves, the ones who´ve come from "before", might also be a little streamlined - since I as a Sage want to get the most out of this swell new game, every PC will be built as a starting character and then develop from there. Many character details, convoluted stories and excessive backgrounds might also be trimmed down some. The ZHB characters varied pretty wildly when it came to the scale of "fairly grounded" and "OMG anime", and we´re aiming for something a little more level in scale.
As an example, Iron Seraphs family were a long line of demon-hunters, and his nights were usually spent Buffying it up with Hollow-esque demons that needed to be sworded back to the hells. This time around, the Jin Shen are an archaic society of mystical Daoists with a much more low-key approach to things, so what is kept is the social situations that this puts Seraph as a character in - his family is old and prestigious on one hand, but pretty poor and weird in others. He must try not to get crushed under the massive weight of the expectations of his Elder Uncle, the family head, and somehow manage to make an identity for himself. So no demon fights, no glowing prayer-strip combats and (at least initially) no magical glowing eyes (for the uninitiated, everyone in ZHB as in Nihao Honey hads a special "Bloodline" power - a "Legacy"). Still, the core of his character is still there even without some superficial trappings.

And so on.

Well, of course there are kung fu high schools - you couldn´t reasonably stage an anime-inspired LotW game without them, could you? As you might have surmised from the background material thus far, Shen Zhou City is not really a modern city the way we think about it - it is simply a different backdrop for the old Wuxia themes. Every old wuxia/kung fu movie has rivalling schools with their own secret techniques, and this is also true here - it is, after all, a city that encompasses everything we think of as the mythic-China of Shen Zhou.

The Black Crane School
After the great disaster - the event that saw many wulin schools, small and large, get eradicated through coordinated bomb attacks set by unknown villains - many homeless tudents were swept up by the remaining Great Two - the Tiger and the Dragon. Some people, for various reasons of their own, didn´t want to bend knee to these established powerhouses - and through this act of defiance, the Black Crane school was born! Claiming the place as a Great School in place of the destroyed Vermillion Phoenix School, it has managed to claw itself into a position of relative fame and influence.

On the meta-level of ZHB the animated series, we´ve started animation in China instead of Japan and are all a little fuzzy on the exact letter of the law when it comes to copyright and IP and such, and since we´re not exclusively Chinabased we must actually care about that stuff!

And so on.
With the advent of Legends of the Wulin, things have been toned down some; altough it shares the narrative of the "legendary China that never was", the game takes a lot more cues from the classic wuxis stories by giants such as Liang Yusheng, Jin Yong/Louis Cha and Gu Long.

On the meta-level of ZHB the animated series, we´ve started animation in China instead of Japan and are all a little fuzzy on the exact letter of the law when it comes to copyright and IP and such, and since we´re not exclusively Chinabased we must actually care about that stuff!

The ZHB characters varied pretty wildly when it came to the scale of "fairly grounded" and "OMG anime", and we+´re aiming for something a little more level in scale.

The Jade Dragon School
The Jade Dragon used to be an all-girls school, run behind the scenes (though perhaps not entirely in secret) by the Resplendent Phenix Society, working for the betterment of women in the Wulin and SZ City at large. Recently, though, and seemingly by clerical error they have become much more gender-mixed. Coming from a long tradition of honor and martial excellency, the Jade Dragon even has the Emperor´s daughter among their students.
The Scarlet Tiger School
The Scarlet Tiger is based on power - their student body includes a disproportional amount of the children of wealthy and influential warriors and Clan leaders. Known for their immense pride as well as their hereditary sword-arts, the Scarlet Tiger is more than ready to challenge anyone in the Wulin and the Jiang Hu.

"Bible"?
This is going to be our design document, or "bible" as seems to be the common term used by people who write TV shows or roleplaying games, fr´ex - it´s our big reference document of stuff that we can look at so that we´ll all be on the same page when it comes to how our setting really works. By and large, we have all the IC stuff on the wiki, but this will be the "Unifying theory" on how it all ties together. Genre and theme, if you like, as well as the background workings. If this was a roleplaying game, this would be the Sage´s section.

YE ANCIENTE SAGE OF GENESIS
I´ll say this again, because it is damn important: without SG, none of this would exist. He invented the Nihao Honey-verse, and through this not-trivial act supplied us all with huge amounts of fun and is well deserving of some props. Thanks, man.

THE PRINCIPLE OF ANTIQUITY aka MANGA VERSIMILITUDE
Zhen Zhou City *looks* like a modern city, but it really isn´t – it´s the classic LotW setting filtered through a huge amount of anime/manga and other pop culture and given modern props. Most of the stuff from the LotW books is still there, in one capacity or other – though the characters themselves are long dead, others have risen to replace them. Stuff is *done* in pretty much the same way as always – so a lot of ideas on what “would happen” in a modern society goes out the window. Take a look at classical kung fu stories or manga like Tenjou Tenghe: this is how stuff goes down. Everything happens according to the laws of dramatic principle, and stuff unfolds like in your favourite anime. The cops usually don´t show up to interrupt kung fu duels in shopping malls by sniping the duelees, and so on.

Think about this for a while, because it is important - we´re preserving the dynamics of the vanilla LotW setting while giving it a fresh coat of paint and a smashing new soundtrack. We´re not adding a modern day versimilitude - though we do borrow quite some themes from more contemporary media. See the difference? That way we can have, like, kung fu versions of West Side Story (with feet to the face instead of danceoffs, mind), bloggers writing slashfic on famous Wulin heroes and high-speed motorcycle chases while at the same time staying true to the Wuxia spirit of things.

This also means that, as a rule, guns lose out. Most of the time, they´re not even an issue. When they are, it is because someone (like, say, the Murder Sage!) has been insidious enough to develop a new form of kung fu that works with firearms. This is equivalent to the ages-old "secret style" thing, and the guns are just really a standin for whatever obscure weapon the villain has learned to use to deadly perfection. A great looking standin, of course, but still.

The same goes for tech over all. Essentially, you don´t have to worry about it. It´s window dressing.

BUT THIS DOESN´T MAKE SENSE!=
A lot of stuff doesn´t, no. There´s plenty of material inside that only makes sense within the twin contexts of wuxia stories and shounen-esque high school fight stories. Some explanations - like the ones regarding the presence or lack of school uniforms - are as much excuses as anything else. Work with it, and resist the impulse to be all witty and fourth wall-breaking because it seems amusing at the moment. Setting integrity will always be in the hands of you, the players.

ALL-ENCOMPASSING SHEN ZHOU CITY=
Shen Zhou City *is* Shen Zhou. It encompasses urban areas, forests, mountains and the like - it´s a sprawling megacity that features just about everything in the LotW book. Most of it is urbanized, but we also have mountains with old-style Buddhist Temples, forests and seas.

There is also no "outside" of SZ City, unless we´re talking other countries. Other countries, naturally, are as manga-sterotyped as SZ City. Russian warriors visiting the city (like Arctic Smile!) wield cold-based kung fu, wear fur caps and drink vodka. Visitors from Megatokyo might well be teenaged super-Catholic nun schoolgirls with katanas - like one Christina Kreuzritter Von Engel III.

(Note: this does not mean that everyone has to be a parody of a stereotype, but it does mean that the campaign is living pop culture rather than some sort of effort to simulate a "realistic" world.)

This means that we have space to develop pretty much everything within the context of the City.

LAW AND ORDER IN SZ CITY
The Imperial Magistrates are the “official” keepers of law and order – at least if you listen to the Emperor. The Heaven Sword Clan tends to take care of most things that involve the Wulin, while the Magistrates handle more varied cases – they´re detectives, Texas Rangers and other cool stuff rolled into one. Also, most of their work tends to be fairly boring, at least on the low levels. The ones who have advanced to the rank of “detective” are free to dress up how they want, handle missions however they please and use weird signature weapons.

Meaning, they can make for great opponents or allies, but generally they stay out of the business of the Wulin schools. That´s the job of the Heaven Swords - even if they have been hitting some rough patches lately, now that there´s a new power in town...

NIHAO HONEY: YEAR TWO
SG started up the first official LotW game as a continuation and soft reboot of the first one, and this is exactly how we are doing it. Look at the games as occupying overlapping spots in a quantum city, basically; they share lots of attributes and might refer back and forth to each other, but it is not exactly 100% the same continuity. Also, we will try our damnedest to minimize direct contact with that other game, since your own Sage despairs at doing justice to those colorful characters; it might happen or it might not, but we won´t rush straight for the crossover.
