General Character Description
Post #blah: 14 years old. Kind of a weedy kid. Didn't always get enough to eat, and was sickly. Lived rough with his elder sister and another kid a little older than him - in between his age and sister's age. This second kid had a "protector" relationship with Brian and his sister, and Brian both idolized and resented him. Becoming a pilot is the first time Brian's been strong on his own, able to fight for himself. He's a bit drunk on the thrill of it and acts out a fair bit.

Post #48: Brian Robeson, Age 14, Eager Young Soldier

Eight-year-old Brian and his big sister Maia didn’t have a whole lot more than each other before the end of the world, so they did okay after it. “Dads”, when they had one, were as much to be feared as anything else, and mostly just meant that Mom resented and ignored them more than usual for a while. They’d been taking care of themselves their whole lives, so everybody falling asleep mostly just meant that they didn’t have to worry about getting caught shoplifting dinner any more.

The first thing they did when they figured out nobody was going to wake up was get out of their neighborhood and start looting a better class of house. For a while, they lived in a beautiful mansion, up on the hills looking out over Piedmont, with some other kids – not really a gang, not really a family, but in a lot of ways, better off than most.

Then the monsters came out of the sea. They stomped through the streets of San Francisco like something out of an old movie, spewing beams and smoke and methodically hunting down any sign of human habitation.

And Brian got sick. Some of the other kids got it too – the fever, the shaking, the headaches, then the sleep, and then – they died. Brian lived. On and on, shaking, trembling, moaning in pain and thrashing with nightmares.

Maia never told Brian what she’d done to get Luis Montes to let her go through his gang’s dwindling stocks of drugs searching for something to help him. He does know that nothing helped. He just got better. Sort of.

Ever since then, Brian has the headaches. He can’t seem to keep his weight up, his legs shake when he tries to walk too far or too long, and everything aches, all the time. Maia gave up their house on the hillside for him, had to depend on Luis instead of her brother because he was too weak to protect her.

A lot of bad things happened. Luis and his gang, along with Maia & Brian, hid as best they could. Sometimes there wasn’t enough to eat, and sometimes a fight would break out and someone would get shot or stabbed or whatever. Sometimes Maia and Luis would fight, and Brian would hear her sobbing in the night afterwards.

Then, one day, Luis comes back from a “shopping trip.” But he doesn’t have a satchel of canned food or butane fuel – he’s got a scruffy, hand-printed sign. “Help Us Fight Them – UCB”.

Most people didn’t believe what the geeky grownup and the nervous girl told them. If the guy hadn’t had a riot gun, somebody might have even started something. But for some reason, Luis believed it. Brian maybe didn’t, but he really wanted to. They said that they needed help, because they had a plan to kill one of the monsters.

It worked. Luis even got to be a big damn hero, luring the monster into the trap on a motorcycle. By the time the other monsters showed up, everybody was gone, and the so-called “Resistance” had what they wanted – samples from the monster’s insides. But Luis was dead, and there was no way the rest of the Motherless Sons wanted anything to do with UCB after that. Only Jen, Maia, and Brian stayed on.

It took a while to get results, but what would become the ANIMa was a success beyond the wildest dreams of the Resistance. Especially Brian. Finally, he wasn’t the weak one, the burden. Getting sick might have been worth it after all – because he seems to be a better natural pilot than any of the other candidates. Sure, Elliot has been fighting longer, and volunteered for the test mission back before they even knew if this would work. Sure, Rick tested higher, but he crashed and burned. Sure, Raymond is everybody’s golden boy. But _Brian_ is the one who Prof Daulare relies on.

Maia is gone now. He still visits her, sleeping in the master bedroom of the old house, like Sleeping Beauty waiting for her prince. It won’t be Luis who wakes her, though. It’ll be Brian. He’ll finally be able to protect her, like she protected him.

Physical Description
Skinny, long unkempt black hair, large nose. Sort of ratty-looking. Leather jacket that’s a bit too big for him, heavily patched jeans, an assortment of garish rock t-shirts. Smokes his green more than is good for him.

Relationship Summaries
Prof Daulare – 3/3 – “He gave me a chance to be strong. I won’t let him down.”<br>
Alex – 1/2 – "Who? Oh yeah, that kid."<br>
Jen – 4/1 – "You're the only one who still remembers how weak I was."<br>
Elliot – 1/2 – “You were the first, but you’re not the best.”<br>
Tina – 2/1 – “She’s nice. I don’t think Raymond treats her right, though.”<br>
Evan – 1/2 – “Just like I used to be. A doormat.”<br>
Riri – 1/2 – “She’s spooky. And reading all the time can’t be good for you.”<br>
Raymond – 1/3 – “Why’s he so damn popular? I’m a better pilot. Still... I guess he's an okay guy.”<br>
Ashley – 1/2 – “Always sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong.”<br>
Sally "Robeson" – 1/4 – “That’s why I fight. Because the little kids like her need protecting. But what's with all this 'Big Brother' stuff?!?”<br>
Katie – 2/2 – “I can’t believe the Prof lets her be a pilot. It’s too dangerous for someone like her.”<br>
Brandi – 2/2 – Anchor. “I don’t really know what her reasons for fighting are, but she wants to win as bad as I do. We’ll be a good team.”<br>

ANIMa
Sleek, curvy, silver. Like a sportscar or a jet fighter. Or maybe a little of both.

Chassis – Brandi – Light, fast, and made for fighting. Looks a bit like a Valkyrie in GERWalk Mode, but more like Gundam Kyrios.<br>
Jets/Wings – Prof Daulare – Powerful thrust and turns on a dime.<br>
Missile Pod – Jen – One shot is usually all it takes.<br>
Minigun – Tina – Accurate, but not a lot of stopping power.<br>
ECM Suite – Sally – When things get hairy.<br>
Afterburner – Katie – A little extra.<br>

Theme
Silver Machine, by Hawkwind. Preferably a nice grungy version.

Age: 13

Played by: motichu

Appearance
Slightly short for her age, in a cute sort of way. Dark blond hair tied back into a ponytail, and green eyes. Not terribly picky about her clothing, though she usually sticks to T-shirts and some form of pants, but always wears a particular ring on a chain around her neck.

Personality
Generally has a somewhat cheerful disposition. Wants to help everyone out as much as possible, but doesn't understand that it takes time and energy she doesn't have.

Backstory
Katie grew up with a very small family. This meant that after the Bliss hit, the only family she had left was her cousin Alex ((OOC: different from the Alex in the resistance)). The two of them had always gotten along particularly well, so they decided to stick together. It worked pretty well for a few years. Sure, there were problems along the way, but since they had each other they'd always be okay, right?

Not so. Eventually, Alex began to grow more and more tired. Savvy enough to realize that the same thing that had happened to their family was happening to him (though he didn't tell Katie for fear of scaring her too much). He began searching for someone else to take care of her, eventually coming across a simple-looking flyer asking for people to join the resistance group at UCB. Not having any better options, he decided to take her there. However, the day they arrived on campus turned out to be not too long after Alex's 18th birthday. As he began to fall asleep for what he thought might be the last time, he gave Katie some words that she remembers to this day:

"Ever since I've known you, you've been the cheerful, smiling face that helps us all keep going. Never lose that. People need it too much, and you're just the person to give it to them. Stay strong."

As he said them, he removed his class ring and gave it to Katie as something to remember him by. Although she grieved for a while, Katie took his words to heart and decided to help everyone out as much as she could, eventually telling [Authority Figure] that she wanted to become an ANIMa pilot, which she later did. Although she doesn't truly understand the effect that being a pilot has on people, she's determined to not let everyone down.

3/2/0 - Evan - We get along pretty well. He really helps keep everyone going.<br>
Sleek, curvy, silver. Like a sportscar or a jet fighter. Or maybe a little of both.
Tina used to be a pilot; an eager soldier driven to fight against the aliens or what they did to the world. Unlike many, she never knew her real parents; she was in a foster home when the Bliss hit. She joined the Resistance determined to make a difference, and attached herself as something of a daughter figure to the Authority Figure. However, during a dangerous mission with an upgrade to the ANIMA device, her neural links were damaged so that she could no longer pilot. However, after a long period of recovery and training, she discovered she could still Anchor, and decided to use that as her weapon. She tries to be what she sees as the perfect Anchor: comforting, supportive, patient. Her injuries never fully healed, and Anchoring still causes her physical pain: no one but her knows how much.

Post#blah: A scrappy little street-rat of a girl, somewhere around 12-14. Lived rough for the first couple years, and has some really, really bad memories from those days, but since finding UCB she's immersed herself in what's left of the libraries and has learned a little bit about nearly anything you can think of. She's nervous and jumpy around other people a lot of the time, and seriously agoraphobic, but she's invaluable to the resistance for her brains.

Post#49: Physical Description: Riri is a slightly round-faced, soft-featured Asian-American girl with her black hair in a single braid. She wears round glasses, and self-consciously “little-girly” dresses (procured for her by [AF]). She is probably around 15, but looks younger.

If you sit down with her for a while, and ask her sideways, while she’s on another topic, Riri will tell you that her name is Marie Chu. But she’s been Riri her whole life, and that’s what everyone still calls her. Including her.

When she’s nervous – which is most of the time when she’s with more than 1 person, or people she hasn’t become very comfortable with – Riri dissociates a bit. Speaking in the third person is the most obvious sign of this, but she also tends to lose most of her affect. People who haven’t gotten to know her think she’s cold, shy, and emotionless. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Riri is a prodigy. Brilliant, able to absorb massive amounts of information, insatiably curious, and endlessly creative. But she’s also badly broken. Something awful must have happened to her.

She turned up in the Library one day 3 years ago. It took [AF] weeks to coax her out of hiding enough to give her some fresh food and clean clothes, and weeks more before she would talk to him. When she finally opened up, though, he was amazed.

Riri *understood* the aliens. She had notebooks full of scrawled observations, speculation, even experiments. Some she wouldn’t show him. This little girl had spent almost every waking moment since Bliss Day obsessively learning about the Bliss and the monsters. How had she survived?

She doesn’t talk about it. Best as [AF] can piece together, she had an older companion for most of the time before she came to the Library who helped protect her and find her supplies, and she lived in a building that was fairly secure and had a generator for power. It seems likely that her companion’s death (or Bliss? She’s not clear about that) was the catalyst for her giving up her direct research and coming to the Library.

It’s her work that led to the development of the ANIMa. [AF] supplied the technological know-how, but Riri is the one who purified the Interface Virus from the “brains” of the monster. She says they’re not the real aliens – just sort of a living machine that the aliens control through the dream. According to Riri, the monsters might have already been here down deep in the ocean for a long time, and the aliens are just using them somehow.

Riri hardly ever leaves the Library. She is very lonely, but she is also terrified of being around other people, for reasons that she can’t explain. She also suffers an irrational fear of open spaces and particularly the open sky.

Physical Description: Skinny, long unkempt black hair, large nose. Sort of ratty-looking. Leather jacket that’s a bit too big for him, heavily patched jeans, an assortment of garish rock t-shirts. Smokes his green more than is good for him.

Nine-year-old Brian and his big sister Maia didn’t have a whole lot more than each other before the end of the world, so they did okay after it.

Maia never told Brian what she’d done to get [Protector] to let her go through his gang’s dwindling stocks of drugs searching for something to help him. He does know that nothing helped. He just got better. Sort of.

Ever since then, Brian has the headaches. He can’t seem to keep his weight up, his legs shake when he tries to walk too far or too long, and everything aches, all the time. Maia gave up their house on the hillside for him, had to depend on [Protector] instead of her brother because he was too weak to protect her.

A lot of bad things happened. [Protector] and his gang, along with Maia & Brian, hid as best they could. Sometimes there wasn’t enough to eat, and sometimes a fight would break out and someone would get shot or stabbed or whatever. Sometimes Maia and [Protector] would fight, and Brian would hear her sobbing in the night afterwards.

Then, one day, [Protector] comes back from a “shopping trip.” But he doesn’t have a satchel of canned food or butane fuel – he’s got a scruffy, hand-printed sign. “Help Us Fight Them – UCB”.

Most people didn’t believe what the geeky grownup and the nervous girl told them. If the guy hadn’t had a riot gun, somebody might have even started something. But for some reason, [Protector] believed it. Brian maybe didn’t, but he really wanted to. They said that they needed help, because they had a plan to kill one of the monsters.

It worked. [Protector] even got to be a big hero, luring the monster into the trap on a motorcycle. By the time the other monsters showed up, everybody was gone, and the so-called “Resistance” had what they wanted – samples from the monster’s insides.

Sure, [Seasoned Veteran] has been fighting longer, and volunteered for the test mission back before they even knew if this would work. Sure, [Dead Pilot] tested higher, but he crashed and burned. Sure, Raymond is everybody’s golden boy. But _Brian_ is the one who [AF] relies on.

Maia is gone now. He still visits her, sleeping in the master bedroom of the old house, like Sleeping Beauty waiting for her prince. It won’t be [Protector] who wakes her, though. It’ll be Brian. He’ll finally be able to protect her, like she protected him.

Relationship Summaries

Post #blah: 14 years old. Kind of a weedy kid. Didn't always get enough to eat, and was sickly. Lived rough with his elder sister and another kid a little older than him - in between his age and sister's age. This second kid had a "protector" relationship with Brian and his sister, and Brian both idolized and resented him. Becoming a pilot is the first time Brian's been strong on his own, able to fight for himself. He's a bit drunk on the thrill of it and acts out a fair bit.

Post #48: Brian Robeson, Age 14, Eager Young Soldier

Physical Description: Skinny, long unkempt black hair, large nose. Sort of ratty-looking. Leather jacket that’s a bit too big for him, heavily patched jeans, an assortment of garish rock t-shirts. Smokes his green more than is good for him.

Nine-year-old Brian and his big sister Maia didn’t have a whole lot more than each other before the end of the world, so they did okay after it.

Post #33: Anchor to Elliot, Kind, 15. A caretaker type, maybe a bit of a pleaser? He's uncomfortable with the intimacy and responsibility of Anchoring, but wants to help - and someone needs to do it. Got through the hard years at the bottom of the pecking order in a gang, and has emotional scars to prove it, but he's basically still a kind, loving kid.

Post #47: Evan is practically ethereal. Pale, pale skin, light blue eyes, blond hair, tall and thin and lithe. He’s a very pretty boy.

Evan is sweet. That’s really the right word for it. He wants people to be happy, and he hates conflict and fighting. He was the kid at the bottom of the pecking order for a long time on the streets of Oakland, running from gangs and hiding from monsters. He’s always been pretty, delicate, and that’s a recipe for being miserable when toughness and hardness is what keeps you alive. He had to do a lot of things he hated to stay alive and safe, but he’s learned to keep his chin up no matter what.

Which is a good quality in an Anchor. Nothing really gets to Evan any more – he doesn’t hold grudges, he listens, he knows that you didn’t really mean it. He’s used to faking it until he makes it.

Which is going to make this tough. [Dead Pilot] was his best friend. But there must have been something inside him that he never told Evan, and that’s what killed him. Evan’s pretty sure he knows what it was. Maybe if Evan had been a little braver, *he* could have said something, let [Dead Pilot] know that it was okay with him if they were more than just friends.

[Veteran] needs someone now. Evan has the talent, he has the training, and … well … he’s the only real option. [Veteran] can’t replace [Dead Pilot], but at least maybe he can be brave and be there for him.

There’s just one. Little. Complication. There’s someone else Evan likes. She doesn’t know. She can’t know, and neither can [Veteran]. Because it might just *actually* kill him.

Children's Games and other Disturbing Things
The kids of the resistance have taken to playing a Lets Pretend game known as "Pilots, Anchors and Monsters" - this is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin:

:"I hit you with a sword, like swish slice!"
:"Nuh uh! I'm made of sooper strong alien armor and stuff."
:"Damn! (kisses Lily on the cheek) HA! Now it's a lightsaber!"
:"No fair! Kissing another girl doesn't count!"
:"MOM! Does kissing another girl count?!"
:"Yeah, Missus Smith, it should count!"
:"...did you both like it?"
:"Yeah!"
:"...it counted for Anna and Meredith, so it should count here."
:"Aw, man!"

They also frequently beg the Pilots to play as the monsters, because "You get to pilot in real life, sooo..."

:An extra Privileged Interlude to the first player who's 3+ Trauma pilot's... realistic... depiction of the monster makes the "Pilot" and/or "Anchor" cry. --Bliss Authority

Naturally, some of the tweens who still play use it as an excuse for sexual experimentation, of the variety where a "Pilot" will exclaim "...oh no, only my ultimate form will save me now!" with a lecherous grin, and the also-grinning "Anchor" will start pawing on them. At least.

Unusually for this sort of thing, Sara has few problems with the "clean" version of the game - they're kids, they're having fun, they're working out thier fears of the aliens in a safe way; let them have thier fun, so long as it doesn't get more heavy than pecking random friends on the cheek.

I suggest that Archer, on the other hand, would probably vehemently object - as his famous excess of gravitas rears it's head. --Bliss Authority

Jon whole-heartily approves of both versions of the game, especially as doing so feeds into GUPPI: the Grand Unified Polyamorous Pilot Initiative. Has no problems playing the "Monster," even though frequently, games might stall because he is hung up on inaccuracies, such as the lack of any such thing as an "Ultimate Form." --BarGamer 14:49, 27 October 2008 (PDT)

Mission 2
Since Hattori manifested Casey as plasma rifles in the first mission, but Casey is no longer here, with retro activity being upheld, I manifested Celine as a dual-mode RPG launcher. In close range, it basically acts like a grenade lobber, with effects similar to a close-range shotgun burst, except more explodey. Fallout Fans, you know what I'm talking about. At long range, she's a laser-guided Rocket-Propelled Grenade.

The symbolism is like this: Well, she's divided. She's afraid of failure, but she's really a good Anchor. In close-range, she mindlessly flails around, hurting everyone close to her. But with care and food, she's really an accurate and deadly weapon. Noah and Celine are perfect for each other. See, they're BOTH afraid of failure, but while as Celine is crushed under it's weight, Noah uses it to try even harder. Those two will either lift each other to glory, or go to hell together. I'm going to try my best to make sure it's the former.

In a Nutshell:
If it weren't for me, this place would fall apart in a week, nevermind what the Specials are up to, Duct-Tape knows what.

Ethan is a solid, practical kid. Years of lugging around heavy tools, climbing to wherever the job is, getting his hands dirty, and his fingers cut up, zapped, and whatever else, have given him lean muscles and calluses on top of calluses. Tired of wasting precious shampoo on oil and worse for his hair, he shaved himself bald. People joke that he used to be a white kid, but the work permanently stained his skin dark. Oh SURE, Lily and Jessica might know how to handle software and a bit of hardware, and Sophie might know how to hold her breath for a while and bring back 'the gos,' but HE'S the one who makes sure that it's all running nice and smooth. He was tested for Pilot ability, but barely failed out. Immediately after his test, he left to unclog the toilets, apparently unconcerned. What he lacks in genius he makes for in intuition and hard work. That's not to say that he doesn't have a sense of humor. As a matter of fact, he's a card-carrying member of the Church of Duct-Tape.

Rels:
* (2/4) Archer. You know exactly where you stand with him, and if you don't, he'll tell ya. Short, to the point, and no-nonsense. Great source of wisdom, if you got the time to listen.
*Sara, his official 'unofficial boss.' When something's broken, and he either can't do it right now, or is in the rare spot of not knowing about it, she's the one who would let him have it, from the sharp edge of her tongue. Is halfway convinced he could do a better job than she could of running Treasure Island, though it would mean dealing with the Specials every day. No thank you.
*He has a special relationship (undercase-R) with Jessica, who gets him the tools and parts he needs to do his work. And she almost always delivers. Dependable. He likes that in a girl.
*Allie has a fine bottom, though, and has a woman's touch with a man's hurts. Wouldn't turn her down, either.
*Alex and Anna know the value of a hard day's sweat, as does his man Vic... He's done his best work for them, many a time.
*Jon and Lily's never treated him badly, either. Decent pair of Specials, and his blessings to their offspring. He'd build them a cradle, if they asked.

Children of Children is a Bliss Stage play-by-post game, set 22 years after RIGHT NOW and 15 years after the events of "Final Act" seven years from now, featuring the children of the characters from "Final Act", carrying on the fight their parents only started.

Introduction
:Right now, the moment I begin telling you this — this was the moment 22 years ago when humanity was struck by an alien attack we couldn't begin to understand. This is Bliss Day.

:It was the first blow of a terrible war. 15 years ago, armed with technology they couldn't have understood and could barely even use, our fathers and mothers, then no older than we were, struck back.

:And our parents won.

:...Won enough time, at least, to ensure that we would finish the job.

If it weren't for me, this place would fall apart in a week, nevermind what the Specials are up to, Duct-Tape knows what.

*Allie had a fine bottom, though, and has a woman's touch with a man's hurts.

Jon Smith
Played by: <strike>Hattori</strike> BarGamer

* Jonathan Derek Smith, Commander Smith's child by Nathan Sinclair. Acts more like Derek, her older brother.
* Hard-working, logical, detail-oriented.
* Wants to be dispassionate, but has trouble doing so.

Worldview:

* Philosophical but rational.
* Since humanity's very existence is on the line, every effort must be made to strengthen the ANIMas, as they are our only means of defense against extinction.
* Therefore, anything that strengthens the ANIMas should be pursued relentlessly.
* From Derek's notes, Jon knows that intense relationships strengthen the ANIMas.
* Jon, whose mind is both implacable and idealistic, takes this to its logical conclusion: To save humanity, he has to create as many of these relationships as possible. Prejudices and boundaries from the adult society cannot be allowed to interfere - survival takes precedence.
* Despite his hard conclusions and an effective execution, Jon suffers internal conflict due to his philosophy.

Appearance:
Relatively tall; dark skin and frizzy hair (delivered to him express mail from Sara's then Anchor Nathan Sinclair), which he wears in impressively long dreadlocks. Tends to wear wrap-around shades that resemble Kamina's (as designed by someone with a better grasp of physics than the character designers at Gainax), especially when marching down to the creche for a mission and/or on dates. This may or may not be when his trenchcoat comes out. Otherwise, has a penchant for solid blue, khaki and red buttondowns and anime t-shirts.

Personality:

* Like Sara, Jon is trusting and loves easily. He is smart enough to have stumbled upon the most effective way of fighting the aliens (the power of love), but not Machiavellian enough to manipulate others for easy results.
* I see him making lots of tough choices between what he knows to be efficient and what he wants to do. He doesn't want to cheat on the girl whose virginity he took, but both efficiency and his hormones demand more relationships. He wants to stamp out the blossoming affair between his girlfriend and that other pilot, but for him jealousy is akin to hypocrisy and so he suppresses his feelings on the matter. Stuff like that.
* I do see him eventually resolving this problem (in an Interlude, not a Resolution) by effectively articulating his philosophy of necessity to the resistance group. Jon thinks it'd be optimal for everyone to practice open relationships in order to defeat the aliens (also less angst), but he's afraid he's not eloquent enough to make his ideas sound pragmatic rather than perverted. The reason I want to resolve the central conflict of his character a good chunk of time before he Blisses out is because I want the resolution to be a feat of temperance and logic.
* Jonathan Derek Smith, Commander Smith's child by Nathan Sinclair. Acts more like Derek, her older brother.
* Hard-working, logical, detail-oriented.
* Wants to be dispassionate, but has trouble doing so.

Worldview:

* Philosophical but rational.

It should be almost anticlimactic if he's successful.
It should be almost anticlimactic if he's successful.

He's not a Shinji, because his power is drawn from his own actions, but he's not really a Kamina either, because he's very self-conflicted. I'm interested in this character because while he's as effective as a natural ace, his power comes from creating a plan and applying ingenuity to a tough problem rather than being a maverick genius.
:Suggesting to me that he's a Simon: unsure of himself, but ultimately, will gloriously rise to the occasion. --Bliss Authority

Jon Smith
Played by: <strike>Hattori</strike> BarGamer

* Jonathan Derek Smith, Commander Smith's child by Nathan Sinclair. Acts more like Derek, her older brother.
* Hard-working, logical, detail-oriented.
* Wants to be dispassionate, but has trouble doing so.

Worldview:

* Philosophical but rational.
