Hero Name: Flickr

Real Name: Unknown

Look Man, white, calloused hands, ragged clothing, no costume. Flickr boasts a toned, but fairly average frame despite standing 190cm (six foot three) tall, presenting as a little lanky in certain lights. With a dirty face of slightly precocious stubble for the eighteen-year-old and a mess of emerald hair with dark roots and short, black back and sides he comes off as rather unkempt, normal considering his homeless status. He looks Northwestern European in descent but has the kind of natural tan one gets unavoidably by being outside all the time, rather than acquired and carefully-distributed. Flickr dresses eclectically, but his clothes are always ragged, punkish and have spray paint stains; lately he has been sporting an emerald green tweed blazer with a number of genuine bullet holes in it. Goggles, a flannel-pattern face scarf and fingerless gloves are also in persistent attendance due to his graffiti art habit. There is a measure of generally dressing for ease of movement however, as he's picked up the useful talent of parkour for a homeless kid in Halycon City.

Abilities: Superhumanly tough, incredibly strong and uniquely skilled at fighting. Flickr, appropriate to his name, is in a subtle state of constantly flickering between thousands of microseconds in time. Due to this, impacts, currently tested to the point of gunfire, distribute their energy through this flickering incarnations and ultimately bounce off his skin. Similarly, although Flickr himself is not built to throw a particularly strong punch, when you factor in the strength of a thousand different versions of him, the combined impact of that energy is frequently deadly when misused. Although Flickr has learned to street fight over the years, most of his talent comes from this state of flickering through times, it grants him the ability to anticipate actions, especially in states of heightened stress and thus react to foil them before they have even begun. Flickr does not understand the extent of these abilities yet and is still slowly easing into their use, generally preferring not to push his luck.

When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if you’ve been a good leader or effective teammate. If they say yes, your mentor loses Influence over you and you mark potential. If they say no, your mentor gains Influence over you, and you take +1 forward on using the Label your mentor embodies.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about your mentor (including your feelings towards them). Give them Influence over you and add 1 Team to the pool.

Backstory:

How did you first meet your mentor?

Root was my music teacher. Not even kidding you. In retrospect, it was probably a cover story for the secret agent thing. And he still does give me musical pointers when he's not teaching me magic. Officially, he's only helping me with the piano.

When and why did you choose to train with them?

There's no one else around to teach me how to use my powers. My dad doesn't think I'm old enough (and he's leery of the supernatural in general), and contrary to what you see on TV, wizards don't actually advertise.

Now, to tell you that story, I have to tell you this one. During one of our lessons, a guy in body armor bursts through the window, armed to the teeth. Before I could even react, Leonard draws a gun of his own and puts a bullet in him. Normally, I would have freaked out at that point...well, I still did. But it wasn't over. The guy jumped to his feet and, for lack for a better word, exploded out of his armor. He wasn't human, at least not anymore. More like the living dead. Also, ten feet tall. If Root had been in his prime, he probably still could have handled the zombie supersoldier thing with ease.

But his prime was a long time and many emergency surgeries ago. Which brings me to another reason I decided to stick with Leonard. He knows computers. He knows music, and he knows spy stuff. Taking care of himself beyond the basics? Not so much. He's a stubborn idiot, but no one deserves to be alone with his kind of pain. Anyway, about that fight. I really didn't help that much. I mostly distracted the zombie by throwing little fireballs while Leonard shot out its glowing weak point.

Why did they agree to train you?

Apparently to him, that qualified as "good under pressure". Root thinks I have a gift. The power to make a difference. And to hear him tell it, he'd give any budding magic user some pointers to help them avoid blowing too much stuff up. There's gotta be more than that, but I can never read the guy. (Leonard is grappling with his actions as an AEGIS operative. He wants desperately to prove to himself that he is capable of doing some genuine good for someone. Leonard hopes that Simon can put the knowledge and skills he passes on to better use than he ever did. Moreover, he has lost all contact with his family and friends, and sometimes he can't help but think of his apprentices as the children he never had.)

Who else, outside of the team, knows about your training?

Root had one other apprentice. No, she did not turn to evil. Matter of fact, I don't completely blame her for leaving.

I hadn't seen my twin since our parents broke up. Imagine my surprise when Melanie showed up for magic lessons. I wish she'd stuck around. Honestly, both of us had issues his belief that you couldn't be a hero and a human being at the same time. But the idea repulsed her in a really personal way. In her eyes, you couldn't help people without being a part of the world they live in. Moreover, heroes were supposed to be symbols of hope, not lurking vigilantes. Mel went independent after she and Root had their falling out (though I've made it clear I'll come running if she ever needs my help). She's doing pretty well as a hero, if the livestreams are any indication.

Why do you care about the team?

I mean, there's the obvious stuff. When I need to save the day, I can trust them to have my back. But it's more than that. I feel like I can be me around them. They...support me instead of pushing me to be someone I'm not.

TEAM MOVES:
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they think you're cool. If they say yes, give them Influence and take Influence over them. If they say no, mark a condition or spurn them immediately. Either way, add a team to the pool.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, give them influence over you, and ask them who they'd like you to be. Mark potential if you show them that person. Add a team to the pool no matter what.

LABELS:
Freak: +1
Danger: +0
Savior: -1
Superior: +2
Mundane: +1

PLAYBOOK MOVES:
I don't give a damn what you think!: Whenever you reject others' influence, add +2 to your roll.

Mary Contrary: When someone tries to pierce your mask, comfort or support you, or provoke you, you can interfere. Roll +Superior. On a hit, they take a -2 on their roll. On a 10+, take Influence over them or clear a condition. On a 7-9, you expose yourself to retribution, cost, or judgment. On a miss, they get a 10+ no matter what they rolled and you mark a condition, their choice.

Are you watching closely?: When you mislead, distract, or trick someone, roll +Superior. On a hit, they are fooled, at least for a moment. On a 10+, choose 3. On a 7-9, choose 2.
- You get an opportunity.
- You expose a weakness or flaw.
- You confuse them for some time.
- You avoid further entanglement.

On a miss, you're hopelessly embroiled in it and under pressure; mark a condition.

BACKSTORY

How did you get your powers?

Certainly not from my father. I’d like to think I inherited nothing from him but his good looks and his money. In any case, I know for a fact that I got my abilities from my mother. Perhaps I should explain who my parents are (even though you probably already know):

My father is Naser Al-Farouq, a Bahraini businessman who owns—what else—The Oasis Corporation. In all honesty, I don’t know precisely what my father or his corporation does, just that they’ve made a lot of money doing it. My mother is, of course, the one and only Fatima. Surely you’ve heard of her? She had a smash hit in the late eighties? She was like the Cher of Bahrain. No?

Anyway, do you notice how my mother's face, at 40-whatever, is wrinkle-free? She really hasn't had those plastic surgeries the tabloids keep accusing her of. She told me when I first started showing signs of my powers: it's all an illusion. I don't think my father knows she has powers, or else they probably wouldn't ever have gotten married in the first place. Their marriage is hardly happy as it is.

What do you do for fun?

I post vlogs, manage my Twitter account, go shopping, practice kickboxing. One of those things is not like the other, I know, but it's difficult being a socialite and a hero-in-training; especially when you don't have freaking super strength or lightning speed or whatever. Not that you even need those things when you have as many Youtube subscribers as I do. Besides, kickboxing gives me one hell of a bikini body.

Who, outside the team, thinks better of you than you do?

My brother, Faisal. Or just Sal, for short. He's just a couple of years younger than me, but our father seems to have finally realized that being a dad involves actually spending time with your kids, so Sal has a much better relationship with him than I do. I don't hold that against Sal, though--he's cool in my book. I won’t let him become like our father, insha’Allah.

Why do you try to be a hero?

It pisses my father off, which is hilarious. He hates metahumans, and his own daughter being one, well…(crying laughter emoji).

Plus, it boosts my follower count on Instagram.

Why do you care about the team?

Easy: they make me look good.

RELATIONSHIPS
I keep trying to impress ---- with my antics…

---- and I pulled an awesome (if illegal) stunt together…

People who Influence me:
People who are Influenced by me:

Playbook: The Protege
Hero Name: Hellion
Real Name: Simon Burke
Look: Man, White, Athletic Body, Casual Clothes, Protective Wear
Shared Ability: Power Mimicry
Your Own Ability: Impossible Fighting Skills
Your Mentor's Ability: Hacking

Mentor: Leonard "Root" Starling, renegade AEGIS operative
Embodies: Savior
Denies: Mundane

Labels:
Danger: 0
Freak: 0
Savior: +1
Superior: +2
Mundane: 0

Protege Moves:

Venting Frustration: When you directly engage while you are Angry, you can roll + the Label your mentor denies and clear Angry.

Captain: When you enter battle as a team, add an extra Team to the pool and carry +1 forward if you are the leader.

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: When you assess the situation before entering into a fight, you may ask one additional question, even on a miss.

Mentor's Resources: False Identities, Communicators, Surveillance Equipment

Moment of Truth: The moment that you show who you really are: your mentor, or something different. You can do whatever your mentor could do and more. You can do the incredible, even the things they always failed to accomplish. Of course, they’re not going to see you the same way, no matter which path you choose…

Team Moves:

Hero Name: Bonespur
Real Name: Alejandra "Alex" Ramirez
Look: woman, Latina, boring clothing, iconic costume, full disguise
Abilities: Heightened physical abilities, bone generation, impossibile mobility

Team Moves:
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they see you as the person wearing the mask or the person underneath. If the former, mark potential and clear a condition. If the latter, take Influence over them if you reveal yourself

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about who you really are. Give them influence, and shift your Mundane up and your mask's Label down.

Labels:
Danger +1
Freak -1
Savior 0
Superior 0
Mundane +3

Playbook Moves:
The Mask: You wear a mask and hide your real identity. Once per session you can affirm either your heroic or secret identity to switch your Mundane with your mask's Label (Danger). When you reveal your secret identity to someone who didn't know it already, mark potential.

Game Face: When you commit yourself to save someone or defeat a terrible enemy, mark a condition and take +1 ongoing to all rolls in direct pursuit of that goal. At the end of any scene in which you don't make progress towards that goal, mark a condition. When you fufill your goal, mark potential.

Mild-mannered: When you try to use your civilian identity to deceive, trick, or slip past someone, roll +Mundane. On a hit they buy your facade. On a 7-9, choose one:
-you're still under observation
-you leave something incriminating behind
-you're forced to make a fool of yourself to sell it
On a miss, one of your civilian obligations rears its ugly head.

Secret Identity:
School: Athletic team
Home: Household chores
Social: Popularity

Backstory:
-When did you first put on the mask? Why?
My first... um, job, I guess, was some vandals at school. They busted up the trophy case, vandalized the pool while having some kind of pizza party slash kegger thing and I wanted to put the fear of God into them. Some of those trophies were mine, you know? My team and I worked hard for them. Like I could've just busted in there in, I dunno, a t-shirt and shorts or something but that didn't have the, whatchacallit, gravitas or something to it. These things require costumes. Anyway, so I took an old costume I made up for a Dias de las Muertos party and I went to last year and I've got the whole bone thing going on so... you know.

-Why do you keep a secret identity?
Oh my gosh, is that even a question? I have a big family. Yeah, large Mexican-American family, you've never heard that before but I have one. Also I have a bunch of friends from the team and just, like, in general. When I do my thing, it's like every other person I take down screams how they'll kill me or whatever. It's like a YouTube comments section out there. Even if they're just, I dunno, mad or whatever I'm not gonna take that risk. Gotta keep them safe. Also my dad would go all the way out of his entire mind if he found out.

-Who, outside of the team, knows about your dual identity?
My younger sister Maya. We share a room. I mean, how could she not? She's two years younger than me, and is hitting that 'too cool to care about anything' phase so as long as I keep my side of the room clean and do my part of the chores and cover for her, she doesn't hold it over my head. Much.

-Who thinks the worst of your masked identity?
Well, there's this girl at school - Reiko - who does this whole YouTube thing on superheroes? It's kind of really popular and stuff and she does... I dunno, if you wanna call it 'investigative journalism' but she'll livestream fights if she can make it out there and report on, like, our maybe social lives and everything and she might have ome out to see one of my fights and I maybe... uh... broke her camera? When she got a new one, Bonespur was the part of a long-running focus series. Like, not to brag, but I'm pretty popular as just Alex. Bonespur, thanks to Reiko, so not so much on the social media. Ay.

-Why do you care about the team?
Duh! They're awesome. You can do a lot more with people than without, you know? Especially when they all have cool powers and fancy gadgets and stuff. Plus they don't judge me. I don't think they do. Maybe they do? I mean, they have some seriously rad stuff going on while I grow my bones and can lift a car, and my best piece of tech is last year's iPhone... no, no, I'm being dumb again. They're cool. We're cool. All good. I think.

When our team first came together...
We saved the life of someone important, either to the city or to us. Who was it? Why are they important?

Relationships:
- knew your civilian life first.
You refused to tell - your secret identity when they asked.

Influence:
You look up to your teammates; they seem to have this superhero thing figured out. Give two of them Influence over you.

Here's the wiki for our Masks game, which has no good title. I'll post some background here soon.

[[publicschoolprivateschoolnoschoolatall_NPCs|NPCs]]

'''HOW THE TEAM CAME TOGETHER'''

'''We defeated a dangerous enemy. Who or what was it?'''

Steel. He busted into town, I think he was from down south somewhere. He started pushing around the street kids, strong-arming the local gangs into his organisation. Gun smuggler mostly. He was violently pushing to get a foothold in Halcyon. King sent me, told me to run him out of town. I thought he was just some guy, but he had gravity control powers, and a lot of guns. He wasn't short on goons either.

'''We destroyed our surroundings in the fights. Where was it? What did we destroy?'''

We were at Steel's warehouse, where he stored his guns. I ran into Flickr, or Flickr ran into me, and he persuaded me to go along with him to the place. I hadn't actually done any heroing before, I just tried to find safe places to practice using my power. Anyway, turned out I was more powerful than I thought. Some stray bolts cooked off his ammo, and it blew up. It wasn't an uncontrolled fire - it turned out Steel was able to control the fire pretty damn well with his gravity powers, but the place was gutted by the end of it.

I don't want to give you the impression I completely sucked. There were some steel bars he was keeping - quite possibly as weapons because that's what he used them for, and I was able to stop him mincing us with them.

'''We didn’t trust each other at first, but that changed. How? Why?'''

When Steel started flinging the flames around with his power, he didn't particularly care who gets onto the shot, almost killing a couple of his own in the process. At this point, everyone had a choice - run away, try to get a clean shot on Steel while he's occupied with other heroes, or help the others out to regroup and think of a plan. I'm proud to declare, we picked the latter option.

'''We saved the life of someone important, either to the city or to us. Who was it? Why are they important?'''

"So we hear about this big weapon dealie thing going down, which, cool, right? Not the deal, but being able to stop it. So we go in, all guns blazing. Or electricity blazing and bones hurling and all that, and that's all great... except, eh heh, there was an undercover cop there. Detective Marcus Chen. He's got the total John Woo vibe and all which is neat but... well, he was there to get whoever was giving Steel the weapons and stuff and we kinda... uh... messed that up. Stopping the weapons was a big deal, but apparently the bigger deal was Steel's boss. So, um, yeah. Detective Chen was not happy. It made such a splash it totally messed up his undercover gig, and they kicked him upstairs. He kinda keeps tabs on us now. Sometimes, he points us at something. Sometimes he tells us not to do something, which we do anyway. Which he probably knew we would do anyway, so maybe it's reverse cop psychology? Anyway, it's kinda neat having the local cop boss on your side. It would be nicer if he didn't get so mad, though."

'''All things considered, we did well and impressed an established hero. Who was it?'''

El Corazón de León, a lucha-themed Silver Age hero and former member of the Exemplars. Also known as Lionheart because people weren't as comfortable with foreign-sounding superhero names when he was active. Semi-retired now, in the sense that everyone knows his neighbourhood and not to mess with it, because even though he's old and has no flashy powers he will kick your ass if you try to sell guns or drugs on his turf. He'd heard about Steel moving into town and was keeping an eye on the situation when we stumbled into it.

'''King''', a gun runner. I don't see him as some benevolent mentor, although I could see him potentially being the one who brings together the group. After all, he is a criminal, he runs the illegal gun trade in Halcyon City. I think he's an anti-villain and anti-authoritarian with an extra little ideology of metahumans first. He definitely likes to think that he has the best interest of everyone at heart, but he doesn't, he helped Flickr because he can use him, which is the case with everyone he helps. Basically, if he can be friends with all the young superheroes (and he does come across as a really nice guy, not creepy charming) then they're less likely to interfere with his illegal activities and obviously, potentially recruiting them in a more serious way to his organisation is something he would find very useful. As far as powers go, I don't think he actually has the ability to sense superpowers, I think he has another metahuman that can do that. I'm pretty sure that he has the power of resurrection, in that if you kill him he will just come back to life some time later, but apart from that I'm not sure. All ideas. One thing I am sure about is that people just call him King, that's not his real name.

Sometimes he tells us not to do something, which we do anyway. Which he probably knew we would do anyway, so maybe it's reverse cop psychology? Anyway, it's kinda neat having the local cop boss on your side. It would be nicer if he didn't get so mad, though."

"King", a gun runner.
