'''Intuitive Codebreaker:''' The PC knows many codes, and enough about cryptography and mathematics to be able to decipher unfamiliar codes quickly. During Extended Tasks to break code, the character may always use Reason + Science and benefits from the Triumphant and the Progression 1 benefits. In addition, she may make the very first check to progress on the Work Track after just a single minute of reading or listening to the code, regardless of how much time is normally needed for an Interval. Finally, setback Complications (p. 91 of the Core book) incurred by this character have only half their usual effect (ie. 2 work lost or +1 resistance)<br>
Additionally, you gain a Trait with the name of the Symbiont; this reflects potential advantages of the Joining, the ability to perform rites and rituals to awaken past hosts’ memories, and the vulnerabilities inherent in the connection.<br>
Mathematics is the Music of Reason<br>
Sucker for a Pretty Face<br>

== Background ==
Ensign Nolen Xel is a slim, tow-headed young Trill. Slight of frame, he seems almost too fragile and youthful to be wearing the grey uniform of a Starfleet intelligence officer. He recently graduated from the Academy and at the tender age of 21, he has come aboard the Eclipse on his first assignment as the ship’s cryptography officer and resident mathematician.

He grew up on Trill, where his parents were both professors (his mother, a mathematician; his father, an engineer). At an early age he displayed a formidable aptitude for STEM disciplines, further enhanced by parents eager to nurture their son's abilities. He surprised his parents by his application to Starfleet Academy, but they supported his decision, and he remains close to them.

He is the seventh host of the Xel symbiont. When its previous host, Lenara Xel, died, Nolen – then a nineteen-year-old Academy cadet – was recalled to Trill for the Joining. It was felt that with the previous host having been a Starfleet officer who had been joined at a similarly young age, the two would function well together. Following the Joining, Nolen Xel returned to the Academy.

He was assigned to the USS Haller for his midshipman’s cruise. While serving, Nolen developed a new EPS power distribution algorithm for the ship’s computer. Although only applicable to ships the size of a runabout or smaller, it was a change easily implemented to all Starfleet ships that increased their available power by seven percent. He received a commendation for his work. (Life Events: Breakthrough or Invention; Special Commendation)

During the same training voyage, he worked with Miki Shimizu and programmed a holodeck simulation for her so she could test her hypothesis about the origins of an unknown disease impacting Federation colonists. This required him to disable the holodeck’s safety protocols to test Miki’s theory, leading to a (mis)adventure for the two.

Miki was reunited with Xel in the final part of her cadet training – a practice military exercise in the wilderness lands outside Outpost 7, on planet Perse. This was cut short as the outpost was attacked by what appeared to be Orion mercenaries. The Starfleet marines were quickly overrun, and the base captured. But a small group of cadets, led by Miki and Xel, with a mixture of bravery and cleverness, managed to board and disable the enemy starship, uncovering a Cardassian plot to foment disunity between members of the Federation.

Nolen Xel has graduated as an ensign and a well-rounded officer. He can be shy and quiet around others, though he becomes animated when discussing the things that are of interest to him – mathematics, cryptography, and his other cerebral interests. He is intensely curious and will inject himself into as many projects involving science, engineering, computers, or mathematics that he can. He also has a passion for flying, particularly shuttlecraft, though it is one he rarely gets to indulge outside of the holodeck. He has an almost freakish ability to spot and decipher patterns in numbers. To Nolen, mathematical constructs - codes, manifolds, equations - are a language, one he can easily understand. He is the most gifted natural codebreaker Starfleet has seen in a generation.
Once per mission, you may declare that a former host had expertise in a relevant skill or field of study; you gain a single Focus for the remainder of the scene, as you draw upon those memories. Additionally, you gain a Trait with the name of the Symbiont; this reflects potential advantages of the Joining, the ability to perform rites and rituals to awaken past hosts’ memories, and the vulnerabilities inherent in the connection.<br>
== Background ==

== Background ==

== Background ==

Amanda Riggs is a hard woman, and she bears that as a badge of honor. Only by remaining strong and vigilant can she protect the safety of the Federation, her ship, and her crew – in that exact order. Riggs grew up on the Mars colony and was groomed by her father to take over the family business. She found she had a keen instinct for negotiation and had an uncanny ability to know when someone was lying to her. Her father also taught her that the world was a cruel place and that only fools trusted easily. Ironically, she turned her father's own advice against him when, instead of taking over the family business, she applied to Starfleet Academy. The two have not spoken in many years.

As an ensign she was assigned to a security detail to protect a diplomat who was negotiating to bring a small independent mining world, Narazi III, which recently discovered warp technology, into the Federation. A faction opposed to this action sent a kill team to assassinate the diplomat, and in the ensuing firefight the assassins were knocked out with phaser fire, and the Starfleet detail were all killed except for Riggs. Traumatized and furious, the young officer interrogated one of the assassins, setting her weapon on maximum power and pointing it at the prisoner's head, threatening to kill him. He gave up the name of the government official who had ordered the assassination, and instead of reporting the information to her commanding officer, she relayed it directly to the planetary government.

The consequences of Riggs' decision was disastrous - the government broadcast the holo of the young ensign describing details of the attack, and the pro- and anti-Federation factions plunged into a costly planetary civil war that cost thousands of lives and led to the planet withdrawing their offer to join when the anti-Federation faction prevailed. Ensign Riggs was court-martialed and spent six months in the brig, and would have been drummed out of Starfleet entirely had she not instead been recruited by Starfleet Intelligence. In Riggs, they saw a woman who was unafraid to get her hands dirty and who was not locked in to conventional Starfleet ethics.

Riggs ascended the ranks as an intelligence operative, and her posting to the ''USS Eclipse'' as a newly minted Commander represents both her first role as executive officer and the first shipboard assignment she's had since the ill-fated mission to Narazi III. As XO and the ship's chief intelligence officer, she is in charge of Ensign Nolen Xel, a young Trill who is a brilliant natural codebreaker but who she feels must be... molded into a more flexible instrument if he is to advance in Starfleet Intelligence. He needs a practical mentor - someone like herself.

== Background ==

Anyone would be excused for thinking that Lenara Xel would never be anything but a thief. Her father was a human Starfleet officer who she'd grown up having never met. Her mother Emony was a joined Trill, a talented criminal with the experience of previous lives who specialized in acquiring valuable items for “art lovers” who wanted to expand their collections but didn’t wish to part with their latinum for the privilege. Her first heist with her mother was when she was thirteen, and Lenara proved especially adept at assisting her mother in circumventing security systems and creating technological devices to facilitate their larceny.

It all came crashing down when they made the mistake of stealing the death mask of an ancient Klingon emperor from a Federation museum on Earth. Emony was shot by a security guard as she was escaping over a perimeter wall. Although the phaser was set to stun, Lenara’s mother lost her balance and fell five meters, breaking her neck. She was arrested while weeping over her mother’s body. Because there was no other available bio-compatible Trill available and time was short, the Xel symbiont was implanted into Lenara. As Lenara was half-human and never properly prepared for the experience, this represented considerable risk. The surgery was a success, and she became Lenara Xel. In a real way, she now carries her criminal mother’s mind and soul within her - for better or worse. Because Lenara is a hybrid she sometimes experiences biocompatibility issues with her symbiont, manifesting in the form of migraines and/or nausea. These symptoms can be controlled with medication.

After her recovery from the implantation, Lenara was put on trial. Because of her youth (she was fifteen) the Federation magistrate turned her over to her father in lieu of sentencing her to a juvenile penal complex. Commander Allen Van Nostrand had been in love with Emony Xel but turned away from her when he discovered her past. Now that his daughter was finally in his life, he was determined to turn her down a better path. Her father's life in Starfleet - one of honor, dedication, and structure - resonated with Lenara, and she applied to the Academy with his blessing when she was old enough.

As a Cadet, she already had a unique skill set that led to her being recruited by Starfleet Intelligence, where she gained supplemental training in covert operations, cryptography, and hand-to-hand combat ("Recruited by Starfleet Intelligence"). She also helped develop the ultra-secret "Veritas-7" cryptographic key sequence, used by Starfleet Intelligence for the most sensitive of communications ("Learned a Unique Language").

Lenara graduated as an Ensign as was assigned to the USS ''Callisto'' under the command of Captain Ananthi Kettering. She served under Kettering for five years, and in her found a nurturing, positive maternal influence that was sorely missing from her life. Under her mentor she prospered and earned a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade three years into their five-year mission. Her mentor has been assigned as the captain of the newly commissioned USS ''Hathaway''. Kettering both recommended Lenara for promotion and requested her protégé’s assignment to her ship as its Communications Officer.

Lenara Xel is a competent and flexible officer, able to execute a variety of missions. Though she has left her mother's criminal legacy behind her, she retains her underworld contacts but eschews using them unless the need is dire.

== Background ==
