Ur-Gense: A Quick History
Ur-Gense was founded a few centuries ago when a principality broke apart when its ruler died without an heir. Those nobles who lived near the Empire were brought into it, and many commoners were killed or accepted by nomadic tribes. The remaining polity fortified a small town. Over time, it became a prosperous but small independent city-state along the Saffron Course, the winding trade routes that go through the wilds to connect the Distant Kings with the Empire.

The last few generations, however, have not been kind to Ur-Gense. The Distant Kings have apparently fallen into a dark age of civil war and unrest. Additionally, the amount of violence involving the nomads, both against each other and against the city and the caravans, increased. Together, these events marked the decline of Ur-Gense, and it slowly became more poor, corrupt, and dangerous.

Several years ago, Prince Fali the Mentor essentially sold the city to the Empire after he almost bankrupted himself building the Welcoming University of the Gentians. While it is too early to tell what the consequences of this will be, it is certainly a dramatic move full of benefits and hindrances.

The Zilayan Empire
The Zilayan Empire stretches across the western coast of the world. Many different peoples have been brought into the Empire; some have been assimilated, others accepted as they are, and others concquered totally. People who make many generalizations about the Empire have probably travelled very little.

The Empire is currently experiencing a period of economic and political expansion. The current Emperor, Emperor Sorelwy VII, fully supports this policy direction. He does not hesitate, however, to use the military to support economic policies when necessary. Opinions vary about whether the Empire would be better off not expanding, or relying on pure military conquest.

The Empire has many innovations unfamiliar to the people of Urgense, but two are noteworthy: Bureaucracy , the institutions of power that do the work of administration, regardless of who sits the Jargoon Throne; and Janissaries, mercenaries from lands outside the Empire given positions of power and responsibility within the empire, but unable to gain citizenship or inheritance. The Zilayans have shown a positive genius for taking one lot of barbarians, training them enough to be useful, and sending them out against another lot on a different frontier.

The Nomads
Once, in a time long ago that may never have existed, the Zilayan citizenry was solely human, and the wastes and wilds beyond it were soley Orc. As time went on, things became more blended. Many Orcs came to the Empire (willingly and otherwise) as it increased in size and power. Though the common image is one of the Orc mercenary, one can find Orcs in many walks of life. Likewise, some humans were taken (willingly and otherwise) into the wilds by the Orcs. Additionally, some cultures that the Empire displaced took up the nomadic life as well, becoming entirely new human tribes. As the population of nomads increased, so did the amount of warfare they participated in. Today, the nomads are an incredibly diverse group. Some tribes have begun to make treaties with the Empire, while others have begun to prepare for war.

The Distant Kings
Far from the Zilayan Empire lie other empires and kingdoms, collectively called the Distant Kings. Few in the Empire have an accurate understanding of who they are, beyond the fact that exotic materials and spices come from the, via the caravans. The most prized spice by the imperial court, saffron, has become the namesake for the trade routes through the wilds.
A PBP game of Lady Blackbird:Tales in the Wild Blue Yonder

Lady Blackbird is on the run from an arranged marriage to Count Carlowe.
She hired a smuggler skyship, The Owl, to take her from her
palace on the Imperial world of Ilysium to the far reaches of the
Remnants, so she could be with her once secret lover, the pirate
king Uriah Flint.

however—Just before reaching the halfway point of Haven,
The Owl was pursued and captured by the Imperial cruiser
Hand of Sorrow, under charges of flying a false flag.

even now Lady Blackbird, her bodyguard, and the crew of
The Owl are detained in the brig, while the commander of the
cruiser, Captain Hollas, runs the smuggler ship’s registry over
the wireless. It’s only a matter of time before they discover the
outstanding warrants and learn that The Owl is owned by
none other than the infamous outcast Cyrus Vance.

Characters
* Lady Blackbird, noble lady in disguise
* Naomi Bishop, her hardass bodyguard
Rules Summary
Rolling the Dice
When you try to overcome an obstacle, you roll dice. Start with one die.
Add a die if you have a trait that can help you. If that trait has any tags
that apply, add another die for each tag. Finally, add any number of dice
from your personal pool of dice (your pool starts with 7 dice).

Roll all the dice you’ve gathered. Each die that shows 4 or higher is a hit.
You need hits equal to the difficulty level (usually 3) to pass the obstacle.

Levels
easy—3 difficult—4 challenging—5 extreme

If you pass, discard all the dice you rolled (including any pool dice you
used). Don’t worry, you can get your pool dice back.

If you don’t pass, you don’t yet achieve your goal. But, you get to keep
the pool dice you rolled and add another die to your pool. The GM will
escalate the situation in some way and you might be able to try again.
Conditions
When events warrant or especially when you fail a roll, the GM may
impose a condition on your character: Injured, Dead, Tired, Angry,
Lost, Hunted, or Trapped. When you take a condition, mark its box
and say how it comes about. [Note: The “dead” condition just means
“presumed dead” unless you say otherwise.]
Helping
If your character is in a position to help another character, you can give them
a die from your pool. Say what your character does to help. If the roll
fails, you get your pool die back. If it succeeds, your die is lost.
Keys
When you hit a Key, you can do one of two things:
* Take an experience point (XP)
* Add a die to your pool (up to a max of 10)

If you go into danger because of your key, you get 2 XP or 2 pool dice
(or 1 XP and 1 pool die). When you have accumulated 5 XP, you earn an
advance. You can spend an advance on one of the following:

*Add a new Trait (based on something you learned during play or
on some past experience that has come to light)
* Add a tag to an existing trait
* Add a new Key (you can never have the same key twice)
* Learn a Secret (if you have the means to)
You can hold on to advances if you want, and spend them at any time,
even in the middle of a battle!

Each key also has a buyoff. If the buyoff condition occurs, you have the
option of removing the Key and earning two advances.
Refresh
You can refresh your pool back to 7 dice by having a refreshment scene
with another character. You may also remove a condition, depending
on the details of the scene. A refreshment scene is a good time to ask
questions (in character) so the other player can show off aspects of his
or her PC—“Why did you choose this life?”—“What do you think of
the Lady?”—“Why did you take this job?” etc. Refreshment scenes
can be flashbacks, too.

History
Johann Holder was born the 3rd of four children to a prosperous merchant in Bogenhafen. He always dreamed of making a great success in the capital, and finally prevailed upon his father to use his connections to secure a good position as apprentice to one of the better gemcutters in Altdorf. Johann did well with the crafting, but he chafed under the supervision of his master, and was annoyed at the arrogance of Altdorfers who teased him as a rustic. His quick wits led him to make too many sharp rejoinders to a stupid wealthy client who didn't understand why a gem would get smaller as one cut it, and a sharp rejoinder to his master after that, and finally a good thrashing. No one in the gemcutting community would have him after that, but he managed to get taken on as a bowyer, where the manners are rougher and a man with an eye for clockwork is always welcome. Starting over in his second trade has been hard for him, and he often resents the fact that he is still a journeyman at an age where he might have been making his masterwork, had he remained a gemcutter.

Johann has learned a few things from his unhappy youth, however, and one of them is tact -- he spends a great deal of time and his disposable income trying to get ahead in guild circles and gain influence and speed his ascent. It was, in fact, the need for funds to support this that led him to follow up on a casual tavern conversation he'd had with Otto. He had high hopes of riches as Otto's connection in Altdorf, but market conditions have been bad lately. Johann is always one to seize the main chance, however, and he's looking for other opportunities. He desperately wants to show up Meister Hochmann, who had him whipped and thrown out of his shop, and wants to prove to his family that he wasn't a fool for going to Altdorf. He's also concluded that with enough money and power, people will overlook almost any defect of character, upbringing, or physique.

History: Johann Holder was born the 3rd of four children to a prosperous merchant in Bogenhafen.

The Pitch
* My biggest PTA tip is that the pitch session should go on for as long as it has to.
* Furthermore, my informal rule in the pitch session is "if you say no, you have to have an idea of your own to throw out" which just keeps things moving.
* We start by talking about the kind of show we don't want our game to be, or any issues we don't want in the game.
* As the Producer, I tell the players that we will be brainstorming ideas; some, possibly many, will get rejected, and that is okay. When we have our idea, there will be an almost audible CLICK in the air and things will start to come together.
* As the Producer, I guide the brainstorming by asking leading questions and writing down key words. Sometimes I stop the brainstorm and read over what we have. I make sure no one is getting walked over and make sure everyone is having their say.
* There it is... CLICK and characters just flow out of that...

Scenes
* I tell the group that we will be going around in a circle for scene framing but this format might break down a bit and that is okay, as long as we get back on track and everone get's their turn.
* If someone can't think of a scene, others should help and scenes you propose do not have to have you in them.
* The scene gets set, we know which characters are involved, and we go from there. Sometimes there will be a discussion of the general intent of the scene (this scene is where the prositute and the wife meet for the first time, with disasterous results), but not always. At some point during the scene it will often become apparent that there is a conflict brewing, but sometimes someone will see a good conflict to drop in and propose it. Now is when we set stakes.

Conflict Resolution
* Set stakes that aren't about success but about price. If you've watched a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you've probably noticed that the big action scenes ultimately aren't about whether Buffy defeats the Big Bad (most of the time the answer is "of course she does") but about what price she must pay to do so. I set rocking stakes for those first few conflicts so that others see how it is done and before long, everyone is helping with the stakes setting. This communal stakes setting is really important.
* We role-play for a while and then come up to the conflict. Make sure no one is dancing away from the conflict but heading towards it. If stakes are set right, people will be looking for conflicts and welcome it. Sometimes a scene opens and the player won't know what to do until a conflict is resolved. That's cool.
* Rarely, maybe once or twice an episode there is a scene with no conflict, which is cool, but if there are more I get nervous. Watch out for folks avoiding using the system. It could mean stakes setting is going wrong or there is some other disconnect.

Fan Mail
* If you, as a player, chuckle, wince or have some other visceral reaction to something another player says, does or otherwise introduces to the game, you should be throwing Fan Mail. If the group is shy about it, I will loudly note a good contribution that is fan mail worthy but that is rare and usually only in the beginning of the episode.
* As the Producer I put Fan Mail on the table and drive play towards conflict so that I can put more. If we are out, I put more out on the next conflict. Sometimes I put more budget into a conflict because it is a big deal conflict but most of the time it is so the players can show their appreciation for one another.

The Fingerwave
* The finger wave is an unofficial method of showing appreciation to the Producer (who cannot receive Fan Mail) or other players when the Audience Pool is depleted. Basically, you point your hands towards the GM and wiggle your fingers in his/her direction.
OK, here's the kibbitzing page for the discussion in the SPA board room. I really like the disputes we've seen so far between the SPARTAns! Now, my general thinking in this scene is that this is going to be one where we move the season-long arc, such as it is, along. Or, if you like, this is a scene in the B story, rather than the Livewire vs. Gunslinger A story. What is Livewire's role in SPARCs? What is the proper relationship between SPARTA and SPARCs? Who's in charge here? All that kind of stuff. -- James Holloway 15:46, 24 January 2006 (PST)

OK, so: here's what we know about the outcome of this scene:

- Joe gets booted out of the team, or at least his currently kind of absent status is confirmed.
- Milka gets returned to the mental institution
- AND: whether ot not the SPARCs remain active has nothing to do with their actions.

Here's my current thought on the situation.

I think that Exemplar has determined that the SPARCs program is going to be a success whatever the individual members have to say about it. And they're going to be successes the right way, which is to say following the guidance and leadership of the SPARTAns. And Livewire is by God going to be their successful leader.

That means that the team members who are bad influences on Joel have got to go. Joe quit by himself after the incident at the mall, right? Well, who are we to stop him. And Frost needs to be hospitalized for her own good. I wonder if Exemplar relalizes that Frost has feelings for Joel?

Now here are the things I'm not certain about:

- am I making Exemplar too much of an obvious shitheel? I'm trying to paint him as an overprotective parent rather than out-and-out domineering type.
- how do we make Frost's kicking-out not seem abrupt?

Comments! --James Holloway 16:14, 3 February 2006 (PST)
---- [Miss fermoy ]I suppose they could do a psych evaluation of Milka, stating its just routine, then when he realises that a, she's still a bit nuts, and b, has feelings for Joel decides its best that she is hospitalised "until she feels better"

----Well, the only SPARCs left uninvolved are Sarah and my character, so the SPARTA might try to enlist them in taking care of the dirty work -- either nicely "Help us help your friends", or nasty "Help us or you're gone too" or Machiavellianly "Help get rid of the troublemaker and we'll know you're ready to be a leader". I personally like the Machiavellian approach for Amy, because it gives me a chance to firm up her mean-girl credibility, and it sets up a nice dynamic for next episode, when Amy realizes that she screwed over a friend just to clear the way for Joel.

But do we need to both decide and wrap up everything in one scene? It seems to me that we could resolve this scene with the big dogs deciding what to do and some of how to do it, and leave the scene where Frost gets hospitalized for later in the episode.

I'm not sure which would be better, to have the SPARTAns have a grownup tell Joe he's out, or have Exemplar delegate it to Livewire, so that even his moment of triumph over Joe is served to him on a platter from his doting dad. (By the way, I think Exemplar is a shitheel -- he's the superhero version of every sports dad you see screaming at the coach for not putting his kid in enough.)

One other thought: whenever the bosses want to do something really crappy, they usually do it as part of a "Quality Initiative" or some such. So maybe these changes could be billed as a team makeover -- new costumes! New gadgets! Promises of new exciting things in the future, like going to Tokyo to cross-train with Tokyo's favorite Teen-team, the All-New MegaTokyo Superstars! Inevitably, the really good stuff will never materialize and the new uniforms will suck, but Diane's performance report for the year will look much better.
: Amy could always deputize Joe to haul Joel back -- setting up a confrontation between the two nicely, while she talks to Shareeta. We could even have a thing where we cut back and forth between the two arguments. At some point, there ought to be a full-on "What the Hell were you THINKING?" argument between Amy and Joe, but it doesn't have to be in this scene. :: Well, we are kind of running out of Budget, so I'd like to have the dust-up be this scene if possible. JOEL: That's not what I said! Dude, why are you doing this? I don't have a little scheme. AMY: I just met him ... and I guess it turns out I don't really know him all that well.

(back to the guys)

JOEL: I don't even understand what you're doing here. If all you're going to do is rag on the team and tear us down, then how are we supposed to help you?

JOE: Help me what, learn to rough up dummy opponents? I don't think you get it, chief. I'm here to help you. You guys need a real fighter to show you a thing or two.

JOEL: Oh, that's it. You really want a rematch, don't you?

JOE: What, one ass-whupping a day not enough for you?

(and)

SHAREETA: So you and he aren't... you know?

AMY: What? No, no. I barely know him.

SHAREETA: So you wouldn't mind if I...?

: AMY: I don't think it's a good idea. He seems kind of creepy to me, you should stay away --
:AMY: Shary, [i]stay away from him[/i]!
:SHAREETA: You're not my mom, Amy! You're not even my sister! You're like this foster child--
:(sounds of shattering crockery from off-camera)
:AMY (turns her back, face in her hands): Just go, OK. Take Joe with you.

Amy sits back down and lays her head on the table.

AMY (quietly): Reality is illusion. Reality is illusion. Reality is illusion.

and ... not sure where to take it from there. Someone's got to come in and break it up, maybe, but it kind of depends on how we want to cut to Miss Fermoy's scene -- what's that going to be, a debriefing?

:I thought the Amy/Shareeta dialogue needed some spice -- gives a good reason to break away from the dialogue, too, if Joel thinks Amy's about to go all "Carrie" on the place. DannyK 20:05, 13 December 2005 (PST)

OK, so the current scene's agenda is that Joe, Amy, and Joel have a big old fight about Joe not fitting in, right? Right now we've got Livewire in a tearing fury against Exemplar, but I don't think Joe knows that, so he might go after him with a "don't you walk away from me" kind of a thing going on. -- James Holloway 04:26, 9 December 2005 (PST)
Miss Fermoy That will make things interesting because he could just haul him back, but that runs the risk of it ending up in a brawl and either one of them nearly using their powers, nice amount of tension.
Final word for this scene: BlackSheep

So here we are in the warehouse in back of the mall, and there's ... y'know ... crates and stuff. Somebody better replace this text with something worth reading.

And then Jessica says something, and Frost gets all freaky-violent, and there's this big SHARD robot. What the heck happens with that?

We've got to have Frost held off from attaching Jessica, right? And then that could be what Jessica is really fleeing from, more than the robot, who's probably programmed more to kick butt than to worry about the hostage.Azrianni 13:11, 29 November 2005 (PST)

Actually, I think it'd work to cut straight to Livewire being blasted through a shop window, out onto the concourse. Jessica 'flees' while Mystic Girl pulls the team back together.

And then, do we want to have the fight spill over into the main concourse? Do we want innocent lives on the line?

Definitely. It's more fuel for Milka's rant.

Here's a moment I know I want to see ....

A young man is fiddling with one of the video cameras on sale at the Mega-Buy electronics emporium. A skate board leans against the young man's leg. He is dressed in battered punk attire, and has several chains around one wrist. The store manager eyes him unhappily. We see the kid flipping through digital filters, making his hand look pixelated, then sepia toned, then mirrored.

Jessica runs, but not too fast, not fast enough to risk actually escaping. The robot tromps after her. She looks around desperately, and her eyes latch onto the camera in the boy's hands. She collapses, screaming in terror as the robot treads toward her.

The boy swings the camera around. We see Jessica through the camera's view ("Recording ... Recording ....") The view swings jerkily, and we see SHARD bearing down on her. The camera swings back to Jessica, as the robot's shadow covers her.

JESSICA: Oh no! Is there anyone who can possibly save me now?

I was thinking something very similar.

And then one of us has to, y'know, actually save her. Because, yeah, she's a manipulative bitch but she's also a bystander. The worst part is that her plan to manipulate us is clearly going to work. There was never really any doubt.

And then SHARD gets beaten down (or perhaps just escapes). But anyway, crisis averted.

I was thinking:

Livewire puts him down but not out in a way that leaves him in the wreckage of the electronics store. He moves in to finish him off; Vigil grabs his arm and stops him. Shard blows the place apart, bringing debris down and escaping into the sewers through the floor or something. Livewire thinks that Vigil was trying to protect him from the explosion, not protect Shard from him. Everyone gets out okay; Vigil's status in the team isn't compromised.

: Plus guilt! I like it. Take my Fan Mail for the scene! Livewire has to thank her for it, though ... because every time he refers to it, ever, in future it's another twist of the knife. TonyLB 12:02, 29 November 2005 (PST)

Then we definitely need the scene where Frost goes off on Jessica. Do we want that in front of the camera?

I think we do. The homecoming queen getting chewed out on camera by a superhero? It's the best of both worlds - Milka gets to publicly humiliate her and gets in trouble for it later. It should probably be Amy who calms her down. And then, while smiling sweetly for the cameras, very calmly threatens to break Jessica's jaw if she messes with the SPARCs again.

: Yeah, I think we should definitely have the machine go into the main mall. Even if the people in charge of this op don't want publicity, the bot's a villain at heart. And Milka going off on it would be a worthwhile thing to have happen. Now I have to figure out the next scene... -- James Holloway 10:13, 29 November 2005 (PST)

Question: What have we established about Shard physically? How are people picturing him? I keep flicking between a spider and a hovering disc. Possibly a disc with various fold-out appendages and weapons?

: I think of SHARD as looking quite humanoid, although larger, with a distinct head and a not-quite face. Definitely eyes. -- James Holloway 10:13, 29 November 2005 (PST)
::Huh. Not what I was thinking at all. Could work, though. Anyway, let's see if I can do the user-marking thing.BlackSheep

Cut to the central avenue of the mall. The crowd, mostly teens at this time of day, are walking in groups across the polished floors, window-shopping, or sitting on benches chatting.

Then a shopfront window explodes outwards, Livewire borne backwards through the glass on the wrong end of a high-pressure jet of water. Shoppers scream and scatter as Shard advances onto the concourse towards him, the rest of the SPARCs making their way out through the debris.

MYSTIC GIRL: Vigil, Frost, you're on crowd control. We need the civilans out of the way of that thing before we can start taking it down. I'm going to get Livewire back on his feet.

Someone screams theatrically from off-screen.

MYSTIC GIRL: Oh, no...

Robot-eye-view as Shard looks from the fallen Livewire, past the remaining super teens and random passers-by, to where Jessica stands, vulnerable and alone. As its camera zooms in on her, she turns and begins to run down the avenue - not fast enough to escape, but fast enough to be chased.

Disregarding the SPARCs, Shard moves after her. Mystic Girl helps Livewire up.

MYSTIC GIRL: You okay?

LIVEWIRE: I'll be a lot better once I've taken a tin-opener to that thing. Which way did it go?

MYSTIC GIRL: Don't be an idiot. It's taken everything we've thrown at it without slowing down, and now it's not just our necks on the line. This is out of our league. I'm calling in SPARTA.

He shakes her off angrily.

LIVEWIRE: No! We can handle this without them.

MYSTIC GIRL: This is no time for an ego trip. You're going to get yourself killed. Or someone else.

LIVEWIRE: Look, if you want to run for help then go ahead. Right now, we're the ones on the scene and this is our responsibility. Maybe we can stop it. Maybe we can't. I'm going to try. Have a little faith in me.

Mystic Girl closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.

LIVEWIRE: And in yourself.

Cut to the display area of an electronics store. A youth in pseudo-punk gear is fiddling with a handheld video camera. A sales assistant is hovering nearby distrustfully.

Jessica rounds the corner, glances sideways, spots the camera and collapses into the B-movie damsel-in-distress pose, shrieking in terror as Shard's shadow looms over her.

JESSICA: Help! Won't somebody please save me?

A blast of electricity hits the robot in the side. Jessica suddenly looks furious.

JESSICA: You again?

LIVEWIRE: Sorry, princess, we're fresh out of white knights. Looks like you're stuck with us.

Livewire continues to fling lightning at the robot. It crackles away uselessly, but draws its attention. As Shard turns towards Livewire again, a whirring sawblade sliding into view, Mystic Girl hauls a complaining homecoming queen out of the way.

LIVEWIRE: What's the matter, buckethead? You want me to stop? Come over here and make me.

Moving with surprising speed, Shard rushes him. Livewire leaps aside, barely making it out of the way of the blade and bouncing painfully off the machine's armoured carapace. But as he gets shakily back to his feet, he's grinning triumphantly. He holds up something metallic and dripping.

LIVEWIRE: Boy, I hope this isn't anything important.

There's an internal explosion that sends Shard flying into a wall of television sets. The robot sinks to the floor among the wrecked hardware, camera-lenses darting around as it tries to focus. There's another red-tinted shot of Livewire. Behind him, Frost and Vigil touch down.

FROST: Is it down?

LIVEWIRE: But not out. I'm going to finish it off.

Vigil catches his arm. Reflexively, he pulls away; she doesn't even budge.

VIGIL: Stay away from him.

LIVEWIRE: What are you-

He's drowned out by a series of explosions. The roof of the store comes down, and Shard vanishes behind a cloud of dust and debris. Then everything goes quiet again. Mystic Girl carefully walks over to the rubble.

MYSTIC GIRL: I think it went through the floor. Maybe the wall. Either way, we'll never catch it now.

Vigil lets go of Livewire's arm. He looks at a lump of concrete as big as his head, and then back to her.

LIVEWIRE: How did you know it was going to....never mind. I owe you one.

VIGIL: I just...didn't want to see anyone get hurt.

LIVEWIRE: Well, you sure saved my hide. Thank you.

There's a crack from off-screen, and a cry of pain. The three of them spin around to see Jessica on her knees, one hand to the side of her face. Frost stands over her, eyes blazing.

FROST: You. Selfish. Bitch.

JESSICA: I-

FROST: Shut up! This is all your fault! People could have been killed! All because you wanted to be the centre of attention. Because you wanted to be special.

MYSTIC GIRL: Frost-

FROST: And because you don't give a damn about anyone but yourself. You think that everyone else is just there to make your life better? You think you can get whatever you want, just because you're pretty and popular and rich? I should give you the beating you've had coming since birth, you spoiled little brat!

MYSTIC GIRL: Frost!

Frost turns away, almost snarling. Mystic Girl returns her gaze levelly.

MYSTIC GIRL: That's enough. Nobody got hurt. Back away before you do something you'll regret.

A tear-streaked Jessica looks up from the floor and spots the kid with the camera, still recording the whole thing.

FROST: I'm done here.
Seen through the camcorder, Jessica buries her face in her hands.
Miss Fermoy 13:35, 29 November 2005 (PST) I like the detail about Jessica seeing the camera, so even though she is crest fallen, she still tries to make a play for her audiences sympathy. Might be an idea to add at the point where she calls her a spoilt little brat something like she raises her hand to strike her...then it makes the threat even more imposing, and the fact she stops at Mystic girls command surprising.
By the way, I'm picturing Shard as pretty much humanoid, but big and bulky with lots of compartments for secret weapons to pop out of. Hey, he's got to be able to dance, right? When Sarah can't take him to the Prom and they have their own secret villain party? Espejo, born as he was from the reflection of an angel, possesses the Glorious Gift of Aspect. Those who gaze upon Espejo see within him the most beautiful aspects of themselves, their highest ideals and hopes made manifest. To look upon his face is to know what you have the potential to be or what you once were. This has a dramatic effect on mortals, one that can move a stoic, cut-throat CEO to tears or cause a hardened criminal to change their life for the better.
Manifestation
Those who cannot see their reflections are immune to Domain miracles cast by Espejo. Whether this stems from the fact that they are blind, or in an area of darkness, matters little. In order for Espejo to use his Estate against others, he first needs to know that they can see what he is able to reflect.

Double
Another creature was born when the angel saw his reflection in the water. Unlike Espejo, however, he embodies the negative aspect of the Estate. Self-hate, mockery, and narcissism are the metaphorical associations that he governs. He is a subtle creature, though, and whom he serves remains a mystery.
The petals of the Amaryllis are a beautiful black gilt at its center with white.
No one sees Espejo the same way, as his Glorious Aspect tends to make people see within him traits that they wish they possessed. However, on the most mundane of levels, Espejo appears to be a young man possessed of smooth features and dark curly hair. In a way, he appears akin to a painting of a Boticelli angel.

Erin Doucet, Baronet of Wind
Appearance:
A skinny, athletic-looking woman with a skin tone dark enough to suggest either some minor non-caucasian ancestry or a lifetime in the sun. Her short, curly dark-brown hair is usually pulled back away from her face. She could potentially be pretty, but usually looks severe. Her best feature is her penetrating brown eyes. She smiles rarely.

Disposition:
Erin is modern in orientation, uncomfortable with her new role as the Domina of Wind, and self-reliant to an extreme. She is charmed by unfeigned altruism, and, while not a terrible person herself, surprisingly comfortable around the dregs of humanity.
Erin can, with a thought, divine a startling amount of information from minor changes in air currents. If a mouse is on the move fifty miles away, the slight air currents it makes are Erin's to read. If someone is speaking at a whisper, the words will still reach the mistress of Wind. Weather is hers to divine for the next day or two at least. The limitations of this ability are mostly those imposed by Erin's still fairly prosaic worldview -- she can not divine any information that could not reasonably be carried by the air (such as color or texture), and anything that happens without an unbroken air connection, such as from inside a relatively airtight building, is invisible to her. The information from further sources may also be slightly out-of-date by the time the wind carries it to Erin -- but her range is extremely long -- she has divined the location of a person 1,000 miles away.
If she's brought face to face with the fact that winds aren't always as purifying as she thinks, it bothers her a lot. A Yellow dogbane, its five petals folded in around its long stem. 3 sets of two petals each spiral up the stem, on opposite sides of the stalk. The dogbane is set against a swirled circle of black and green.

Jack's real focus is on the ambiguity of shadows. More business gets done in the shadows than in the open, where the legal system can shine its spotlight. However, even the legal system has its nooks and crannies. For instance, criminals are not guilty as long as there is the shadow of a doubt. A person can disappear into the shadows, and their whereabouts will be unknown until they return to the light, whether as a living human or a corpse. This makes for a very good business tool, and Jack understands good business. Jack is not at all a moral personality, merely constrained by social systems which he can not bend to his own will. However, whenever he can break the rules without backlash, he does so. He is also very cynical (duh! He'd have to be to be such a creep.)

Jack Hopkins was a gas station owner who owned 7 small mom 'n' Pop locations in Tennessee. Via many shady dealings, he became a millionaire, but unfortunately, criminals rarely stay moneyed for long. A vice cop caught up with him, but instead of furthering his own career at Jack's expense, he blackmailed him. Jack was required to donate a large percentage of his earnings to a series of dummy corporations or Amal Kitchings would reel him in. As a result, despite the fact that Jack is raking in the dough, he can spend very little of it. For this, he would kill Amal, given half a reason.

To Jack, the hurricane was nothing more than an opportunity to make more money, particularly when the oil flow shut down. Jack jumped on the price increase before anybody else could take advantage of the economic disaster, and earned quite a bit of money before anybody even thought to check for price gouging, then dropped his prices shortly thereafter. Jack has a very good head for timing, after all.
