Introduction
At some point, I got the idea of making a list of all kinds of game mechanics used in different games. This way, system designers looking for an inspiration could always browse it through to see if it caused them to come up with anything good. Also, neat mechanics used in obscure games could spread faster and not just be confined to a single game.

Click on the category links below for more detailed descriptions of the mechanic in question. (To do: mark in bold the mechanics for which a description is available.)

The mechanics are also available in a single, neatly formatted file. http://www.xuenay.net/Rope/Grab-bag.pdf has the short version, which lists all kinds of different mechanics but doesn't say anything about what they mean. For somebody just looking for inspiration, that alone may be sufficient. http://www.xuenay.net/Rope/Grab-bag_long.pdf also contains the detailed descriptions, where they exist. These files are recent as of 5 April 2009.

The initial organization of this list is somewhat ad-hoc and arbitrary - if anyone has ideas of making it more logical, be brave and edit the page! (Or bring it up on the Talk page if you don't feel that brave.)

A somewhat related earlier work is the e-book Design Patters in Successful Roleplaying Games. (To do: take the patterns presented there and import them into the grab-bag.)

Darker Dreams:

There are four Domains in Beyond the Veil, each corresponding to the various psychic, emotional, and alchemical properties inherent to the spiritual and mortal world. While Rank is the measure of how powerful a character is be the Domains a character possesses determine what sort of abilities they have, and thus the character’s Attunements are a good indication where their interests lie.

Limitations
*A character may never buy a Domain rating higher than their Rank. If their Rank is reduced extra levels are suppressed and cannot be used. The exception to this is “bonus” ranks granted by Attunements.
*A character is limited in how many Domains they can purchase ranks in by their Rank. If the character has purchased Ranks in too many Domains for their current Rank (such as when circumstances force Transubstantiation to a lower Rank) the character’s “extra” Domains are suppressed in order from lowest to highest rating. When comparing ratings include all purchased ranks, including those suppressed by reduced Rank, as well as ranks granted by Attunement. If there is a tie the player must choose which is suppressed.

Improvement
Buying the first level of a Domain costs a single soul, while improving a character’s rating in a Domain costs a number of Souls equal to the new level times the number of times a Domain of that level has been purchased plus 1. Thus purchasing your first level 1 domain costs a single soul, while a character with Cups 3 who wants to go from Coins 2 to Coins 3 would need to spend 9 Souls.

Conflict resolution in Beyond the Veil is performed in conflict rounds.

* When play-time slows thus the all players involved should immediately determine the initiative of all players. If the conflict automatically structures itself into an obvious chain of actions and reactions, this should become the order of initiative. Each individual attempting to take a slot in the conflict should contest with one another.

* Any action taken or Power used which another character wishes to contest requires a draw be performed. Each player should have a single set of playing cards numbered 1-10 (a 10-sided die or other fair substitute can be allowed at the Gatekeeper's discretion). Each player receives a bonus to their draw equal to their character’s Rank, appropriate Stat, and any Equipment.

Darker Dreams:

more to come...

Beyond the Veil started as a confluence of two impetuses. The first, an abiding annoyance with a certain type of play (and running) of nominally political live action role playing games. The second, a personal question as to whether an interesting, playable, and enjoyable game could be designed using little more than raw economics and, as a direct outgrowth, quasi-Pavlovian punishment/reward schema without it boiling down so far as to be Monopoly; the Roleplaying Game. Though, every effort has been made to simplify the roll of Gatekeeper (or GM) to that of Monopoly's Banker. Through the confluence of these drives the idea for players as spiritual entities grew- a separation from NPCs with much if any significance distills the political aspects by removing an external GM as a foil while the need for resources to be easily convertible through personal power suggested a setting where the various aspects of existence were somewhat transitory in nature. Viola, spiritual beings. Actually, in the earliest drafts the players were restricted to demons/malfasians trapped in hell, the name of the game was actually "To Rule in Hell." There were no light substances, and "agents" were all "cultists." However, basic math going through the strictly economic nature of the game quickly indicated that another tier of "goods" would be beneficial.

In an effort to reduce the number of rules an individual player has to know, most of the system should be packaged into discrete bundles and made into powers. These should cover the abilities other games provide with skill use, class/race abilities, etc. A new player's understanding should progress only as fast as their ability to

Conversions
The following are some of the key conversion rates between various resources. Such conversions always require powers, and how close the power comes to this "ideal" conversion should be based on the power's rank. (obviously powers which do not conform to this are outdated and need to be revised.)

Darker Dreams:

Titles are of infinite importance in realms of spirit, for they are one of the few luxuries among such denizens. There are three types of titles; High, Low, and Power. Each High or Power title grants an equipment bonus of one to all that individual’s conflicts and allows the character to spend an additional Belief, Soul, or Substance in a round. For each High or Low title possessed an individual receives a Soul the first time they leave their Personal Demesne for a game session.

If more than one individual is tied in eligibility for a title, such as tied Ranks for Power titles (Prince or Dragon) then those titles can be claimed by none of the contenders. Similarly, if a single individual is eligible for both High and Low titles in a category (such as if they are the only Denizen with their Attunement) they gain neither title.

High Titles
High titles are granted for having significant Station. The top 3 Stations each grant a title; Sovereign, Archduke, Peer. These titles are cumulative. Thus, the Sovereign has 3 “titles,” the Archduke 2, and Peer 1, plus any other titles they gain.

The highest Station individual with each given Attunement is the Duke of that Substance. Also, the title of Lord can be claimed by yielding an amount of a single type of Substance to the Gatekeeper. If the amount given exceeds a previous grant of the same Substance that individual becomes Lord of that Substance (Lord of Hate [Instinct], for example). Unlike Dukes (or Praetors) a Lord need not have Attunement with that Substance.

Finally, the individual with the most other characters yielding them Fealty, either directly or through their own vassals, is the Lord of the Host.

The benefits of a High title are great; Each High title grants an equipment bonus of one to all that individual’s conflicts and allows the character to spend an additional Belief, Soul, or Substance in a round. The character also receives a Soul the first time they leave their Personal Demesne for a game session for each High title possessed.

Again, if a single individual is eligible for both High and Low titles in a category (such as if they are the only Denizen with their Attunement) they gain neither title.

Power Titles
Power titles are granted for having significant Rank. The individual in the Realm with the highest Rank is Prince, while the highest Ranked individual with a given attunement is the Praetor of that Substance.

Power titles grants significant advantage to their holders in conflicts. Each such title grants an equipment bonus of one to all that individual’s conflicts and allows the character to spend an additional Belief, Soul, or Substance in a round.

Low Titles
Low titles were originally intended as a form of derision, however beyond the veil any sort of recognition grants an individual power. The lowest Station Denizen in the realm is the Jackal. The lowest Ranked Denizen in the realm is the Worm. The lowest Station Denizen with a given Attunement is the Slave of that attunement while the lowest Ranked Denizen is the attunement’s Serpent.

Wise but weak individuals seek low titles if they cannot take or hold High titles, using them as a source of Resources with which to build their personal power. For each Low title possessed an individual receives a Soul the first time they leave their Personal Demesne for a game session.

However, holding a low title is a unique challenge, as they cannot also be elegable for the corrisponding High title (such as if they are the only Denizen with their Attunement) or they gain neither title. Further, it is not unknown for the fighting for these "low rung" positions to be more fierce than for the High titles. Similarly, it is not uncommon for powerful Denizens to intervene with "largess" or other manipulation recognizing that these low rung positions can be as important to a balance of power as either High or Power titles.

Each character in Beyond the Veil has a Station. The most "powerful" individual sits at one and each additional individual having a progressively higher number for their Station. Thus, a higher station is actually a lower number. No two characters may have the same Station.

If a character wishes to rise in Station, they must challenge the individual holding that station. Such challenges come in a variety of forms, ranging from physical conflict to complex political maneuvers. The limitations to issuing a challenge are as follows;
* A character may not engage the same individual twice in a row.
* A character may not challenge the last individual to which they lost a challenge.

Station is primarily considered to determine who possesses many coveted Titles, and does not innately confer any particular respect or power. Characters with advanced Station sometimes have advanced Rank, both through the requirements to have gained and held the Station and because increased Station can provide access to greater Titles and thus Resources- though it is not given that a character of significant Station has been able to parlay that advantage into raw power.

Each character has their own Personal Demesne. Haven and cocoon, these personal realms are completely pliant to the Denizen’s wishes and will, appearing as they desire and granting them complete mastery. A Denizen who wishes to Transubstantiate to a different Rank must retreat to their own Demesne, using its power to focus their own. Further, a Denizen who has no Psyche remaining may regain a single point by retreating to their Personal Demesne.

All characters are assumed to have retreated to their Personal Demesne at some point prior to game, and must pay a cost determined by their Rank to escape at the start of game. This is done before they can receive any resources.

Entry
An individual may enter their own Personal Demesne any time they walk through a doorway unobserved. Individuals who are Discorporate for some reason must only walk through a doorway (even observation by other Discorporate individuals cannot prevent their escape). An individual in a Personal Demesne should mark this by holding a fist at head height.
An individual may enter another’s Personal Demesne only if the owner is already within it. To do so they must spend one Substance to which the owner of the destination is Attuned, and pass through a doorway unobserved. The owner of the Personal Demesne is immediately aware of their visitor, and thus must be present on the other side of the doorway (and immediately informed what has happened).

Within the Demesne
A Denizen may not use Powers while within their personal realm, as the pliant nature simply makes it seem as though the dearest wish of the Denizen had been enacted while, in fact, no power has been exerted. No known Worldly Powers can be used from within a Personal Demesne, the Mortal Realm is simply too far removed to make the necessary contact.
Otherwise, Denizens are supreme within their own Personal Demesne. They win all conflicts unless the other spends a point of Belief- in which case the contest is made normally. If someone attempts to escape another’s Personal Demesne they must spend a point of Belief. The owner may force an Intensity or Agility challenge. If the owner of a Personal Demesne leaves before their visitors they cannot restrain their guests from leaving.

Leaving the Demesne
Entering one’s Personal Demesne is a double edged sword; each is a custom built prison as well as being a sanctuary. Any character with Rank greater than Shade must spend an amount of Substance matching their Attunement, or points of Belief, determined by their Rank to leave their Demesne.

There are four Domains in Beyond the Veil, each corresponding to the various psychic, emotional, and alchemical properties inherent to the spiritual and mortal world. While Rank is the measure of how powerful a character the Domains a character possesses determines what sort of individual they are, and thus the character’s Attunements are a good indication.

Limitations
*A character may never buy a Domain rating higher than their Rank. If their Rank is reduced extra levels are suppressed and cannot be used. The exception to this is “bonus” ranks granted by Attunements.
*A character is limited in how many Domains they can purchase ranks in by their Rank. If the character has purchased Ranks in too many Domains for their current Rank (such as when circumstances force Transubstantiation to a lower Rank) the character’s “extra” Domains are suppressed in order from lowest to highest rating (the character must choose which is suppressed if there is a tie).

Improvement
Improving a character’s rating in a Domain costs a number of Souls equal to the new level times the number of times a Domain of that level has been purchased. Thus a character with Cups 3 who wants to go from Coins 2 to Coins 3 would need to spend 6 Souls.

When purchasing a new level in a Domain, the character receives a free Power from that domain of equal or lower level.
Mortal Ties
Valuables;
*Cash- Money makes the world go round, this is the most basic resource.
*Strings- While Cash is the most basic resource, a favor has twice the effectiveness- especially when combined with solid currency.

Assets; Unlike most resources, assets are rarely traded. Most produce one point of a given resource each game. Some, referred to as Agents, are helpful in using Worldly Powers.
*Investments- Produces Cash.
*Influences- Produces Strings.
*Cultist- (Agent)
*Priest- (Agent) Produces Belief.
*Warlock- (Agent) Produces Instinct.
*Witch- (Agent) Produces Desire.
*Sorcerer- (Agent) Produces Will.
*Enchanter- (Agent) Produces Flesh.
*Hirophant- (Agent) Produces Earth.
*Wizard- (Agent) Produces Fire.
*Mage- (Agent) Produces Air.
*Thaumaturgist- (Agent) Produces Water.

Substances
In addition to forming the widest array of traded "goods" in the game, Substances relate to the Attunements a character gains as they Transubstantiate to higher Rank.

*Dark substances: These Substances correspond with various sins and negative experiences.
**Desire- Sorrow, Grief, Despair, Shame, Loss, Loneliness, Isolation, Solitude, and Captivity, and is associated with the Domain of Cups.
**Instinct- Hate, Wrath, Rage, Anger, Fear, Terror, Horror, and Nightmares and is associated with the Domain of Wands.
**Will- Pride, Arrogance, Conceit, Hubris, Egotism, Envy, Jealousy, Longing, Pain, Agony, and Suffering and is associated with the Domain of Swords.
**Flesh- Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Sloth, Corruption, and Decay and is associated with the Domain of Coins.
*Material substances; These Substances correspond with the primal and Alchemical elements.
**Earth- This element also covers Wood, Metal, Crypt, the Grave, and is associated with the Domain of Coins.
**Fire- is associated with the Domain of Wands.
**Air- This element also covers Shadow and Lightning and is associated with the Domain of Swords.
**Water- This element also covers Poisons, Acid, Ice, Frost, and Snow, and is associated with the Domain of Cups.
*Light substances; The inverse of the Dark substances, these reflect the virtues and various positive aspects of the world.
**Faith also celebrates Love and Hope. This is held in the Domain of Cups.
**Charity also celebrates all forms of Kindness. This is reflected in the Domain of Coins.
**Joy encompasses Jubilation and Ecstasy. This shines in the Domain of Wands.
**Justice reflects Temperance and Fairness in all forms. This rests with the Domain of Swords.

Raw Sprit
*Psyche- In a realm where thought, spirit, and physics are one, this substance also passes as a combination of physical health, willpower, and psychic cohesion. Further, while Psyche can be manipulated just like any other Resource, it is the only resource which is entirely native to the spiritual realm. Unlike other Resources, however, the amount of Psyche a character can possess is limited, and a character’s Max Psyche is determined by adding the character’s Rank and Endurance plus one. A character with no remaining Psyche discorporates.
*Belief- "As above, so below." The raw belief of mortals translates across the veil to the spiritual world as one of the most universal coins of the realm.
*Souls- While various entities believe strongly in the rights of free will and the involibility of the immortal soul, it is undeniably a worthy resource and stained souls are traded by even the purest entities in their efforts to stymie those who seek to spread darkness.

Time
Generally, time isn't traded, though it can be used and wasted. Whether the time is measured in conflict rounds or downtime, it is always worth keeping track of how your time is spent...

Any Denizen above the Rank of Shade has one or more Attunements, corrisponding to the Substances used in their Transubstantiation. The most powerful and highly Ranked Denizens manage to achieve multiple Attunements. In many ways the Attunements chosen represent the "nature" of a Denizen, whether it be a Cherubim of Joy or a Demon of Fire and Instinct.

Limitations
A Denizen is completely free in the substance it first attunes to, however there are some limitations to additional Attunements. Denizens who attune to a Material Substance, sometimes called Elementals, cannot attune to “opposing” elements- thus they may attune to Fire or Water and Earth or Air. Similarly, a Denizen generally may not be attuned to both Dark and Light Substances, there are no Denizens of Desire and Justice.

An exception to the rule regarding Dark and Light Substances occurrs in a case where a character has assumed two Attunements related to a single Domain and have no Attunements associated with any other domain. In this case the character can gain all three Attunements for that Domain through the normal process of Transubstantiation. There are legends that with sufficient Rank and the proper Powers a character can assume a final Attunement specific to their chosen Domain.

Names
A character which is attuned to one or more Dark Substances is generally referred to as a Malfaesian. If they have any Material Attunements they often have Elemental added before their Rank title.

If the character is only attuned to Material Substances, and neither Light nor Dark, they are referred to as an Elemental.

A character attuned to Light Substances is called a Celestine. Unlike dark attunements Material-attuned Celestines generally do not add Elemental to this title.

Characters who have Dark, Light, and Material attunements are called Oracles and given great respect, but little trust.

Matching Attunements
If a Denizen attempts to damage another's Psyche for each Attunement that the target and attacker share the target receives a bonus to his defense draw. This bonus is equal to the shared number of attunements, squared.

Thus 1 shared Attunement grants +1, 2 grants +4, and 3 grants +9.

If the target shares all of the attacker’s Attunements the attack deals no damage, and as no character may possess no more than 4 Attunements, a pair of characters matching all 4 Attunements automatically deal no damage to one another, as would any character attacking another who shares all of their Attunements.

This is but one more reason Denizens fear combat with higher Ranked Denizens; Characters who might match their own Attunements; rendering the lower Ranking Denizen unable to do damage, and have still more Attunements; allowing the higher Ranked Denizen to attack, albeit with a penalty.

By some arcane provence of the Pact Fundemental Celestines treat all Light Substances as being the same for determining the Attunement defense bonus and whether the attacker can deal damage at all.

Granting Domains
Each attunement is associated with a Domain, as appropriate to the Substance. For each Light or Dark Attunement a Denizen has that is associated with a given Domain they are granted an additional point in that Domain. If the character posesses an Elemental Attunement it grants two additional levels in the associated Domain. These increases do mean that a character might benefit from an increased rating in Domains they have not otherwise purchased, or that their Domain ratings might exceed those normally available to their Rank.

The Domains and the associated Attunements are;
*Cups; Desire, Water, Faith
*Coins; Flesh, Earth, Charity
*Wands; Instinct, Fire, Joy
*Swords; Will, Air, Justice

Transubstantiation is the process by which a Character in Beyond the Veil advances in Rank and gains Attunements.

To undergo Transubstantiation a character must be within their own Personal Demesne, at which point they may shift between Ranks by spending a number of Souls equal to the new Rank and a variable amount of a single type of Substance. The first time a character undergoes Transubstantiation to increase Rank above Shade they are automatically Attuned to the type of Substance used. Generaly, characters will start out with higher Rank, indicating this first Attunement has been chosen.

Additional Transubstantiations to increase Rank must use only a type of Substance to which the character is Attuned unless the character has reached sufficient Rank to gain an additional Attunement. Each time a character Transubstantiates to a higher rank they may still only use a single type of substance, regardless of their number of Attunements. If the character possesses, or gains, more than one Attunment the type of Substance used must be recorded. This is because a character may choose to sacrifice Rank, regaining the Souls and Substance spent. A character that Transubstantiates to a sufficiently low Rank looses an Attunement, in the reverse of the order in which they were gained, but may later choose to regain the same Attunement or gain a different one if and when they restore their higher Rank.

Any forced loss of Souls or Substance which a character cannot immediately pay forces them to return to their Personal Demesne and Transubstantiate down in Rank until they have the required Souls and Substance or are Shades. Immediately after each Transubstantiation the source of the loss is still paid as much as the newly reduced character has resources to pay.

When Transubstantiating to gain Rank the character gains fresh Psyche for their increased Rank and any increases to their Endurance. However, when Rank is reduced through Transubstantiation current Psyche is lost from these reductions. If the Transubstantiation causes the Denizen to discorporate they immediately gain a point of Psyche from being within their Personal Demesne, but either the Souls or the Substance they would have gained from the Transubstantiation is lost.
