Kerani&#039;s family are ranchers on Colony Alpha 5, one of the oldest colony worlds in the Federation.  In fact, it was colonized several decades before the birth of the Federation, and is one of the smallest of the (still-extant) colony worlds from that time period, with under 2 million people.  Colony Alpha 5&#039;s rich soil makes it well-suited for agriculture, but it has no mineral wealth to speak, little strategic value, and is on no significant trade routes.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Colony Alpha 5 has a small tourism industry, mostly catering to &amp;quot;adventure tourists&amp;quot; drawn to the planet&#039;s plentiful still-untamed wilderness regions.  Despite considerable natural beauty, Colony Alpha 5 never took off as a mainstream tourist destination - and most of the people there like it that way.&lt;br /&gt;

Many consider Colony Alpha 5 to be &amp;quot;behind the times,&amp;quot; and this is not inaccurate. Already legendary as the best Parrises Squares player Starfleet Academy had ever produced, she had already established a name for herself as a coach as well, managing a professional Squares team during a sabbatical from Starfleet.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;LTCMD Jansrud&#039;&#039;&#039; convinced Kerani to join the team despite the fact that she&#039;d never really participated in team sports at a high level.  (Ishrelia, of course, wound up on the team as well.)  Jansrud&#039;s mentorship taught Kerani valuable lessons about both sport and leadership - the sort of teamwork necessary in Starfleet... as well as lessons from this unconventional maverick officer about how one sometimes has to bend the rules to succeed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All was going well until one day, when Kerani&#039;s mentor approached her about participating in a match-fixing scheme originated by a Ferengi gambling syndicate.  If she and Ishrelia, the team&#039;s two stars, just &amp;quot;let up&amp;quot; a little in the next match, it could be lucrative for all of them.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Though she didn&#039;t want to go against her mentor, and knew that the ensuing scandal would tarnish the reputation of a great sports hero, Kerani nevertheless went to the authorities.  The investigation that resulted uncovered even more crimes, implicating several powerful Federation and Starfleet officials.  During that trying time, to Kerani&#039;s surprise, Ishrelia (who Kerani thought of as somewhat unscrupulous and prone to doing anything to gain an advantage) had her teammate&#039;s back all the way.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It should be noted that the Jansrud case (not unlike the Pete Rose case in the 20th century) was covered heavily in the media, and nearly everyone has an opinion on it.  The majority opinion is that justice was served appropriately, but a significant minority believe that Jansrud essentially did nothing wrong (she was betting on her own team to win) or that as a relatively minor player in a larger conspiracy, she only deserved a light punishment as opposed to being given a court martial and  lifetime ban from her sport.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Success at the Academy and the experience of the scandal led Kerani to embrace her differences and non-conformity. She does what she likes, and isn&#039;t easily influenced by others, traits that can also come off as stubbornness and abrasiveness.&lt;br /&gt;

Or when both were romantically pursuing the same male classmate. Being intensely competitive and sharing certain types of young-and-stupid, the two decided to &amp;quot;duel for him,&amp;quot; with the winner earning a clear field for their &amp;quot;target.&amp;quot; (Not the Ushaan, as they weren&#039;t quite THAT stupid, but one of those fakey 24th century sports that involve hitting each other with sticks and wrestling.) After fighting for a while, they went to the ground, one pinned the other, and... they started making out with each other.&lt;br /&gt;

Afterwards, the &amp;quot;target&amp;quot; being forgotten, their rivalry continued, but so did an intense physical attraction, and every couple of weeks they would hook up again, usually after some athletic competition. They kept their relationship &amp;quot;secret&amp;quot; for various reasons (Ishrellia claimed that while relations with the same sex are normal and indeed virtually mandatory for an Andorian, and relations with aliens of the opposite sex are somewhat acceptable, relations with aliens of the same sex are still taboo in her clan. &amp;quot;I can&#039;t explain in a way you pink-skins would understand.&amp;quot;) &amp;quot;Secret&amp;quot; is in quotes because both are almost comically lacking in subtlety and deception skills, so their relationship was known to pretty much the entire Academy.&lt;br /&gt;

She&#039;s barely met her maternal grandparents - they&#039;re satisfied that she&#039;s well taken care of, and... well despite the Vulcan philosophy of IDIC, anti-alien prejudices among Vulcankind haven&#039;t gone fully extinct, even a century after Spock rose to prominence. Eschewing an ascetic devotion to &#039;logic&#039;, she keeps the raging emotional swings of her Vulcan side in check with a combination of meditation techniques of Earth origin and throwing herself into hobbies that require intense focus - particularly Kyudo and racing. She competes at an elite level in both - she won the high school archery team championship for the entire Sol system twice and the Vulcan Sector once, and had a standing invitation to the FIA/CRL/TMA* Galaxy Cup racing circuit if the Academy didn&#039;t work out (plus an overloaded PADD&#039;s worth of moving violations, fortunately all accrued as a minor).&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

While home on leave after her second year, T’Rea was driving her XJ-7 Cloudskimmer sports hovercar over the Philippine Sea, aiming to ride the winds of incoming Typhoon Koguma, when she noticed a capsized traditionally-built fishing boat 20 kilometers east of Hachijō-jima, near the edge of the storm front. The civilian ship’s limited sensors located a damaged distress beacon and the lifesigns of several survivors, but due to the interference from the storm and seawater emergency services were unable to gain a safe transporter lock on them. T’rea navigated the vessel down to a safe distance to jump into the water - itself a difficult feat with 20-meter waves and the possibility that crashing the craft could further endanger the survivors - and sent it away on autopilot after she jumped in. T’Rea managed to gather the three survivors together so that they could all be extracted with a lock on her academy commbadge. &lt;br /&gt;

T’rea navigated the vessel down to a safe distance to jump into the water - itself a difficult feat with 20-meter waves and the possibility that crashing the craft could further endanger the survivors - and sent it away on autopilot after she jumped in. T&#039;rea&#039;s mother (Vulcan) and father (human) were Starfleet officers, and both were killed in the Cardassian war while she was very young. She was mostly raised by her paternal grandparents in Matsuzaki, Japan, still a resort town surrounded by nature in the 24th century. She&#039;s barely met her maternal grandparents - they&#039;re satisfied that she&#039;s well taken care of, and... well despite the Vulcan philosophy of IDIC, anti-alien prejudices among Vulcankind haven&#039;t gone fully extinct, even a century after Spock rose to prominence. Eschewing an ascetic devotion to &#039;logic&#039;, she keeps the raging emotional swings of her Vulcan side in check with a combination of meditation techniques of Earth origin and throwing herself into hobbies that require intense focus - particularly Kyudo and racing. She competes at an elite level in both - she won the high school archery team championship for the entire Sol system twice and the Vulcan Sector once, and had a standing invitation to the FIA/CRL/TMA* Galaxy Cup racing circuit if the Academy didn&#039;t work out (plus an overloaded PADD&#039;s worth of moving violations, fortunately all accrued as a minor).&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

During her second year, T’Rea was selected to be the midshipman adjutant to Commander Willow Reed, director of the Academy flight school. While home on leave after her second year, T’Rea was driving her XJ-7 Cloudskimmer sports hovercar over the Philippine Sea, aiming to ride the winds of incoming Typhoon Koguma, when she noticed a capsized traditionally-built fishing boat 20 kilometers east of Hachijō-jima, near the edge of the storm front. The civilian ship’s limited sensors located a damaged distress beacon and the lifesigns of several survivors, but due to the interference from the storm and seawater emergency services were unable to gain a safe transporter lock on them. T’rea navigated the vessel down to a safe distance to jump into the water - itself a difficult feat with 20-meter waves and the possibility that crashing the craft could further endanger the survivors - and sent it away on autopilot after she jumped in. T’Rea managed to gather the three survivors together so that they could all be extracted with a lock on her academy commbadge. &lt;br /&gt;

She much prefers machines, particularly fast and noisy ones, as they both don&#039;t think at her and provide her with sensory distraction from everyone else who&#039;s doing it. She&#039;d be happiest in a lonely engineering post - like the highly isolated nacelle monitoring stations on a Galaxy-class Explorer - but as a cadet that isn&#039;t much an option.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

She made friends with T&#039;Rea over their shared love of engines that go way too fast; she also appreciates that, while T&#039;Rea&#039;s mind isn&#039;t exactly quieter than most peoples&#039;, she keeps her thoughts in check without being totally unapproachable. Mariza is deathly afraid that at some point people are going to start assuming she&#039;s a ships counselor and keep coming to her as a sounding board, too, because of Betazoid stereotypes&lt;br /&gt;

Verdan Qet (previously Verdan Laum) is a twenty-nine year old trill scientist joined with the Qet symbiont (I have been debating on age of the symbiont, am inclined to leave that undefined). Verdan was born on the planet Trill to a wealthy family dealing in extremely rare and expensive off-world items, particularly unique artifacts from pre-space flight societies, both for cultures now involved in interstellar trade and those that are extinct. While the many unusual items from distant corners of the galaxy peaked young Verdan&#039;s interest in history and xeno-ethnology, he was profoundly troubled that even the legitimate trade in such artifacts is de facto encouragement tomb robbing and looting of museums disturbed him, disgusted with his family&#039;s habit of selling goods of &amp;quot;unclear&amp;quot; provenance. This resulted in Verdan leaving the family business as soon as he was able, and instead opting to go into law enforcement. He briefly studied forensic science at the Trill Science Ministry before becoming an Investigator in the Trill government&#039;s elite anti-crime organization. Verdan was still a junior agent, less than a year into a career he had no plans of leaving and barely twenty-four years old when he had the encounter that would completely change the trajectory of his life.&lt;br /&gt;

The Qet symbiont had spent lifetimes studying the impact of First Contact on various species, both in terms of culturally as a xeno-ethnologist and physically as a xeno-biologist. Verdan&#039;s childhood surrounded by ancient artifacts and his experience at the Ministry studying forensic science meant their interests were well matched. None of Qet&#039;s previous hosts were ever involved with Starfleet, so the opportunity appealed to its need to continue growing and learning, and Verdan was desperate to get as far away from Trill and reminders of his time with Garam as possible. At Starfleet Verdan Qet is driven and focused on his studies, but age difference and his grief meant he tended to avoid socializing with his fellow students outside of the classroom. However, four years is a long time, and slowly Verdan has come out of his shell and started trying to get to know others in his cohort, occasionally even teasing and flirting, though he has avoided any actual romances, instead preferring to spend his energy trying for top spot in the Science department out of the graduation class.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Verdan and his partner, Senior Investigator Garam Maadis, were sent to investigate a series of mysterious and bloody deaths at a small mining outpost on the second moon of Trelik 3, on the edge of Trill space. While the Trelik system is barely settled and largely without significant resources, scans of this moon had found it extensive deposits of a unique crystals appropriate for decorative and industrial uses. Construction on the mining station had begun about five years prior, and for the last three years the Mineral Extraction Conglomerate&#039;s &amp;quot;Trelkian lunar crystals&amp;quot; had been steadily supplied to a widening set of interested buyers. Keeping miners at the station, however, was difficult, as they complained of strange lights and movement just on the edge of vision.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Then the deaths started. First they occurred only in the deepest parts of the mine, where active expansion created greater risk of accidents that could, if one was sufficiently determined, explain the unexpected disappearances followed by later discovery of various body parts. However, after the eighth such death and the spread of the trouble into the higher levels of the mine - literally and figuratively, as the last victim was an aide to the Conglomerate&#039;s onsite overseer - the authorities on Trill were contacted and the two Investigators sent off to uncover the cause.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After an extended investigation - and another victim - Verdan observed that before each disappearance and again before the appearance of the remains the lights in the tunnels started burning slightly brighter and the cameras revealed slight static around the edges of the image. New sensing equipment, jury rigged by the remaining staff of the facility, revealed a crackling, slightly clouded distortion in the air, as if an electrical pulse had taken gaseous form. This entity - for its movements were clearly intelligent, stealthy, and actively predatory - would wait for a victim to be monetarily isolated out of sight of the cameras and swiftly engulf them before slinking away. After a period of hours of &amp;quot;digestion,&amp;quot; the form would rapidly retract, flash brightly, and then explosively expand, showering an assortment of remaining pieces of the victim over a small area.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Then it would return to its hunt - a hunt that became more effective and more efficient the more victims it took. Once the discovery was made, however, there was no clear way to contain the entity, as it flitted unconcerned through any barrier placed before it, including ones made of the native rock and crystal, and it was showing increased interest in the spacecraft, indicating both a desire to leave the moon and a growing understanding that this was the way to achieve its desire. Two more victims were taken before Garam Maadis realized that the way of stopping the creature lay not in the material, but its arrangement. The veins of crystal were not random, but seeded, providing a harmonic field capable of capturing the entity&#039;s energy form, apparently the invention of a past species faced with its deprivations so long before that no records were left of the danger. The engineering crew was able to devise a careful pattern of explosions to reform the hole they had unknowingly created in the entity&#039;s prison, but it required luring the creature back into the depths, which had avoided since its first emergence. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Garam volunteered to serve as bait, as the senior officer present, knowing that there was no possibility of escape. But the risk of allowing a nearly undetectable, highly intelligent, actively malevolent, and incomprehensibly ancient entity to escape into populated space left no real option. Verdan was ordered to organize the miners, ensure the trap was successfully triggered and could contain the entity, and then to evacuate the moon and report on the profound danger of any living being returning to it, much less digging back into the depths. To help a friend to choose a painful death would have been bad enough, but - contrary to all rules and regulations - Verdan and Garam had been lovers as well, since almost the beginning of their time working together. Still, with eleven dead civilians and no ability to evacuate without risking bringing the entity as well, there was no other choice. The plan worked, but Verdan was left profoundly broken by the experience.&lt;br /&gt;

Back on Trill, his superiors gave him - and Garam posthumously - the highest honors for bravery and dedication to the people of Trill. Verdan, meanwhile, struggled with carefully hidden suicidality and profound depression. At the suggestion of a superior he applied for consideration by the Symbiosis Commission. He did not anticipate being selected but any chance to start over seemed appealing. Despite concerns over psychological stability leading to extensive debate on his suitability, the Board approved his joining. The surgery was almost a year to the day from when he and Garam had set out for the Trelkian moon. The newly joined Verdan Qet left as soon as he was healed enough for travel, headed to Earth to study at the Starfleet Academy&lt;br /&gt;

Verdan is pale, with red hair buzzed very short and blue eyes, and has dark markings along the sides of his neck and up to the temples. He stands just under six feet tall and has the lean, lanky build of a long distance runner, though at twenty-nine he has fully outgrown teenage gawkiness.&lt;br /&gt;

In terms of personality, Verdan is quiet and serious. Some of this is actually innate, as he tended to be something of a loner even as a child, preferring books and study to large groups and loud parties. He is intensely competitive, whether in athletics (he was a competitive swimmer through his days at the Ministry of Science), academics, or anything else, though few people realize just how strongly this impulse drives him; he is not inclined to rivalries and does not resent those that beat him, instead his competitive drive is mostly turned inward in the form of self-imposed demands for perfection in all things.&lt;br /&gt;

After Garam’s death, Verdan’s introversion turned to complete isolation. On earth he was able to avoid everyone who knew him before, whether family, coworkers, or his few close friends, and he actively froze out any fellow cadets who tried to get to know him. Fortunately for him, his first year lab partner, a Bolian woman named Elaza Xoff (NPC), intervened. Elaza, as is typical for Bolians, is meticulous, driven, and dedicated to seeking knowledge. With her cultural “workaholic” trends and Verdan’s competitive perfectionism, it is unsurprising that the two of them spent many late nights together working obsessively on homework, projects, and independent research, long after the rest of their classmates had headed off for a chance to relax. In addition, while Elaza somewhat less boisterous and talkative than many Bolians – a fact that actually made bonding with Verdan much easier – she is typical of her species in her incredible ability to form positive relationships with even the most difficult people. Warm, caring, friendly, and possessing and almost supernatural ability to get people to let down their guards and form connections of all kinds, Elaza became a friend to Verdan at a time when he had convinced himself that he didn’t want to form any relationships of any kind. The friendship was profoundly important for her as well, as her Bolian need to serve the group led to too many classmates never noticing that she would exhaust herself trying to help everyone around her and coaxing the many stressed out cadets to keep in good temper and get along without fighting. Verdan, on the other hand, was always ready to let her talk about her feelings to help support her when she needed it. As a result Elaza could spend time with the rest of their cohort without feeling anxious and burned out, and in turn she would pull Verdan out of his shell and push him to form bonds with their classmates. By the end of first year they were close confidants, and by the end of second they were best friends. Third and fourth year they opted to be roommates, which allowed them to still spend significant time together once their differing specialties – Verdan in xeno-ethnology and xeno-biology, Elaza in astrophysics – meant they no longer had classes together. As the end of their time at Starfleet approaches, both Verdan and Elaza are worrying about receiving different assignments and having to adjust to no longer having each-others’ support to help ease the stress of the work, of getting to know new people, and the undermining effects of their own perfectionist tendencies.&lt;br /&gt;

T&#039;rea&#039;s mother (Vulcan) and father (human) were Starfleet officers, and both were killed in the Cardassian war while she was very young. She was mostly raised by her paternal grandparents in Matsuzaki, Japan, still a resort town surrounded by nature in the 24th century. She&#039;s barely met her maternal grandparents - they&#039;re satisfied that she&#039;s well taken care of, and... well despite the Vulcan philosophy of IDIC, anti-alien prejudices among Vulcankind haven&#039;t gone fully extinct, even a century after Spock rose to prominence. Eschewing an ascetic devotion to &#039;logic&#039;, she keeps the raging emotional swings of her Vulcan side in check with a combination of meditation techniques of Earth origin and throwing herself into hobbies that require intense focus - particularly Kyudo and racing. She competes at an elite level in both - she won the high school archery team championship for the entire Sol system twice and the Vulcan Sector once, and had a standing invitation to the FIA/CRL/TMA* Galaxy Cup racing circuit if the Academy didn&#039;t work out (plus an overloaded PADD&#039;s worth of moving violations, fortunately all accrued as a minor).&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

During her second year, T’Rea was selected to be the midshipman adjutant to Commander Willow Reed, director of the Academy flight school. While home on leave after her second year, T’Rea was driving her XJ-7 Cloudskimmer sports hovercar over the Philippine Sea, aiming to ride the winds of incoming Typhoon Koguma, when she noticed a capsized traditionally-built fishing boat 20 kilometers east of Hachijō-jima, near the edge of the storm front. The civilian ship’s limited sensors located a damaged distress beacon and the lifesigns of several survivors, but due to the interference from the storm and seawater emergency services were unable to gain a safe transporter lock on them. T’rea navigated the vessel down to a safe distance to jump into the water - itself a difficult feat with 20-meter waves and the possibility that crashing the craft could further endanger the survivors - and sent it away on autopilot after she jumped in. T’Rea managed to gather the three survivors together so that they could all be extracted with a lock on her academy commbadge. &lt;br /&gt;

&#039;&#039;&#039;Commander Syrok&#039;&#039;&#039;: &#039;&#039;Half-Vulcan&#039;&#039; Reac was Commander Syrok&#039;s idea, pitched when he was still a cadet. Through his years in Starfleet Reac has gone from an entirely panned idea to almost worth trying. Shath Th&#039;Ovinihr is an Andorian born from a heritage of Starfleet personnel. His parents would tell him often that members of the Ovinihr clan served as some of the first Andorians in Starfleet at the founding of the Federation, and that his was a heritage of honourable service and pride &amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Shath grew up on DS-4 Station, where his family had been stationed to serve in Ops and Engineering, and he spent much of his time out of school exploring and getting to know the ins and outs of the Starbase. This curiosity extended out beyond his home station and he readily accepted his parents&#039; expectations that he would go on into Starfleet himself when he came of age, a path that would allow him to go further into the stars that he had grown to admire.&lt;br /&gt;

Enrolling in the Academy, Shath gravitated towards the command track, seeing this as his way of getting a ship of his own to explore with, as well as it being a good fit for his quiet brand of charisma. Minoring in sciences as well, especially Astronavigation kept him, he thought, well-rounded if a little sleep-deprived.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
During a field exercise, where Shath was placed in command of a small team of cadets as a way of training for high-stress situations, Shath suffered a minor breakdown from the demands of issuing commands to the others that could wind up sending them into harm&#039;s way, harm that he felt he should go into himself first &lt;br /&gt;

Feeling disillusioned by what he saw as a lack of command material, Shath was approached by a Benzite Doctor, Parretha. The doctor had mentioned being impressed with Shath&#039;s work in the field exercise and had requested that the Cadet be assigned to her team for a work study period, where he would act as a pilot for the doctor in some of the more remote Federation colonies.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Shath eventually opened up to the Doctor as they were going about the program and confessed his lack of confidence and &#039;softness&#039; that would have him wash out of the Command track. Parretha allowed that sometimes being in command meant that there would have to be hard decisions to be made, but that didn&#039;t mean that the person giving the commands had to be hard themselves. Indeed, compassion and empathy would be just as useful to the young officer as a willingness to make sacrifices in the name of difficult decisions. It was while Shath helped the doctor during a massive outbreak of Hyraxian Fever on the colony of Trico IV that he was ableto see what the doctor meant first hand, and the memories of Dr. Parretha&#039;s actions on that world have stayed with him. Heading back to the Academy after his time with Parretha finished, Shath took to his studies with a renewed vigor.&lt;br /&gt;

Benzite Starfleet Doctor: Dr. Parratha carries herself with an energy approaching the frantic as she goes about her rounds. Specializing in emergency medicine and epidemiology, Parratha rarely gives off the impression that she has any time for her patients as she is rushing to the next three crises. When she approached Shath to take him under her wing, the expectation was clear that he would be keeping up with the doctor, an expectation that the cadet fell dangerously behind in the initial weeks as Shath underestimated the old doctor’s energy. While the doctor appears to be inattentive to most beyond the immediate medical problems, her mind is quick to catch the little details of a patient’s personal life and needs. Often, she would surprise Shath by relating some piece of information to him after the fact or making an inquiry to the patient if it were a follow up visit.&lt;br /&gt;
