Not everyone was born kissing dirt. I cam screaming into this 'Verse in zero-g aboard a boat with the unlikely name of the Banana Split. She was a circus ship and my family were circus folk. cruising the black, traveling from world to world giving performances. Bringing smiles to children and adult alike with our high-larious antics and feats of daring do. My folks, mom and dad, and my twin brother formed a high wire and trapeze act. The Flying Daniels! I got raised to be part of the act.

We didn't bother telling the rubes our names. They'd never remember. No, we kept it simple. To the audience we were Mom and Dad, Brother and... well, that's where it all begins. We couldn't be Brother and Brother. My folks flipped a coin to decide which of us got to be the boy. I got "tails", so, I got to be Sister. I didn't mind. Truth be told, it felt natural. No one seemed surprised when I started dressing the part outside of the show, too. Hell, unless they were reminded, I think everyone forgot I'd been born with boy parts.

Growing up, things ran smooth. Mostly. Brother and I got into trouble with the locals, from time to time. Mostly because I couldn't stop myself from kissing some of the cute local boys. Sometimes, the girls didn't like that so much. Sometimes, the boys got into groping and figured out my training bra was stuffed with something besides girlflesh. The first time we came home banged up, we got yelled at. The second time, we got head duty for a month straight. The third time, my folks threw up their hands and handed us over to Hercules.

Hercules was the circus strongman but, more importantly, he used to run the mixed martial arts circuit. He knew the ins and outs of making people hurt using just his body. He made sure we did, too. Also taught us restraint. Holds and locks that could put someone down without hurting them too bad.

When I was fourteen, I found out there was a word for folk like me. It was getting harder to pretend to be a girl in a leotard, what with my body changing and all. We were performing on Persephone when I caught the attention of Christine. She was like me. Born Chris but knew all her life that she wasn't. She sussed us out after the show. Not just me but my whole family. Talked to us. Told us who she was, asked me about me, explained what transgender meant and how the whole process worked. She was sweet as pie about the whole ordeal and, when I left, she made sure I was stocked up with plenty to read and the right meds to start me off.

I had my family, I had my circus, and I could finally make my body match my soul. I was flying high. Then I crashed. Well. Everyone else crashed. I'm still not clear on the whatfors and whys, to be honest. It was the opening days of the war and somehow the Banana Split ended up in the middle of a skirmish betwixt and between the purple and the brown. First we sucked missiles. Then we sucked space. My folks managed to shove me and Brother aboard the shuttle and were going back to help other folk in when the engine blew. The explosion threw the shuttle clear of the boat.

A browncoat medical frigate picked us up. The Banana Split was gone. Me and Brother, we were orphans. And we were angry. They told us it was an Alliance ship what did the deed. Truth be told, if an Alliance ship had picked us up and told us the Independents had blown up our boat, we'd have believed them, too. We were so angry we weren't so much people as weapons, ready to be pointed. These folk saved our lives and told us the purple bellies had murdered our family. We believed them.

The browncoats probably didn't believe us when we said we were eighteen instead of sixteen, but they were so hard up for troops they didn't ask many questions. We went off to basic. The brass there figured out right quick that Brother and I were a cut above the rest. We didn't know how to shoot but the obstacle course was a joke compared to our circus routine and we could take down men twice our size, hand to hand.

Brother and I got booted from normal army to special forces. The 6th Recon Unit, to be precise. Aka the Tunneling Rangers. The fellas were a bit reluctant at first, what with us being green and me being a boy pretending to be a girl and all, but we were pretty skilled, angry, and eager to learn how to cause some hurt. They came around and we became part of the team.

Weren't a family, though. Understand that. We were all angry, all had our reasons for pushing through and doing the impossible. We watched each other's backs but that sort of anger doesn't forge families. It forges weapons. Truth is, that's all command wanted. Folks willing to go anywhere, do anything to get the job done. And we did.

Then the war was over. We lost. Brother and I weren't ready for it to be over. Anger ain't like a bucket full of water. You don't throw it out, a cup at a time, and eventually end up with an empty bucket. No, anger's like a bottomless pit. The more wrath you deliver upon the enemy, the more wrath seems to be waiting for delivery. We needed an enemy.

Colonel Ngyueyn gave us one. The war wasn't over, he told us. It just needed to tunnel underground for a bit. He recruited us into a program. We'd train as cooks, worm our way into important places, and act as needed. That mostly meant spying but he made it sound like there'd be death in the offing, eventually. Brother and I signed up. Honest, it was a nice change of pace. More important, I could start taking my hormones regular again. My supply during the war'd been pretty sporadic. It'd been okay then. I hadn't been interested in being a boy or a girl then. Just in revenge... and the extra testostorone had help keep me going. Now, though, when I wasn't constantly on the wrong side of the front line, I had a chance to remember that I liked wearing pretty dresses and makeup.

The vectors of the 'Verse are funny things. After I finished my training, I got "assigned" to be a cook in a joint owned by Maximillian Whale. He was a crime lord in the Syndicate. Our enemies, Ngyueyn, was convinced, weren't just the Alliance. We had to deal with the scum who bought off officials and profited from a corrupt government, too. Turns out getting me that job was a mistake on the Colonel's part.

See, by this point in time, I was the spitting image of my mom and, as it turns out, mom was Max Whale's little sister. When she was in her teens, she met dad, ran away, and joined the circus. Uncle Max recognized me straight away. It wasn't all hugs and cuddles, though. Turns out when mom had left, she'd taken a big old lump of cash with her. Uncle Max's cash. He never forgave that. Wanted his money back. I explained that. He didn't care. The result of the battle that followed was two dead goons, three hospitalized goons, and me captured. My fighting'd impressed Uncle Max. He gave me a choice. I could be dead or I could fight for him on the circuit.

Guess which one I picked.

Honest, I didn't mind the circuit. The other fighters were real folk and worth knowing. In a lot of ways, it was like the circus again. Maybe that's why my anger began to die out, finally. Revenge didn't seem so important no more. Not like I was working for the browncoats no more, anyway. Colonel was angry but, you know what? He was all the way out there and my uncle's men were close by with big guns ready to aggrivate my lead allergy.

Honest? Life wasn't too bad just then. Until Uncle Max decided he could make more money if I threw fights than if I won them. The first time I did that, I felt dirty. I had to wonder, what would my folks think if they saw me? After a couple more times, I couldn't stand it no more. I won my next fight. Uncle Max didn't like that much. His men grabbed me, knocked me out, and I woke up in a coffin.

Let me tell you, I've flown a hundred feet up without a net. I've run through storms of bullets. I've faced down angry men three times my size. But nothing terrified me like being in that coffin, underground, dirt crushing down on top of me and oxygen running out. I panicked. I screamed. I cried and I begged. After what seemed like hours, they dug me up. Uncle Max seemed pretty sure I'd do what I was told. He locked me until he could deliver me back to the circuit.

I jack rabbited instead. My uncle's insane. The next time he might decide I'll listen better if his thugs shove ice pickes in my ears till my eardrums pop. I ain't going to stick around for that. And...

... I'm tired. Growing up, my folks always encouraged me to be who I felt like being. They never pushed or prodded or tried to mold me into something they wanted instead of something I wanted. Ever since they died, all I've been is something other people want. The Independents wanted a weapon, Nguyen wanted a spy, my uncle wanted a money maker.

I ain't angry no more. Not really. I'm just tired and wanting to be me again. So, I signed up aboard this ship as a cook. I'd like to earn the money I need to finally have my operation. The war sort of put that idea on hold. I'm also gonna lay low until I think its safe to contact Brother. Hopefully he'll have spent his wrath, too. Hopefully, he'll understand.

I'm gonna lay low until I think its safe to contact Brother. Hopefully he'll have spent his wrath, too. Hopefully, he'll understand.
Background
Some say companions are a rare breed: beautiful, refined, intelligent, and sensual. Christian Edge might be even rarer: a second generation companion. Christian's parents, Sophia and Maxwell, were both companions at the temple on Osiris. They fell in love and, with the guild's blessing, retired and married. Both looked back on their time in the guild fondly, so it seemed only natural that their beautiful son was given over to the temple at age twelve.
<br><br>
From there, Christian grew into the very model of a companion. He was never lacking for clients and he loved the guild. All seemed well until one particular client slipped through screening. His tastes turned out to be a bit too extreme. Christian was forced to defend himself and, in the process, the client died. He turned out to be the son of a certain high ranking official in the military. The guild was able to shield Christian from criminal charges. However, he felt guilt over what he had done and, worse, over what the guild had to do to protect him. Christian left and headed to the Rim. He went to work at the Heart of Gold for another former companion, Nandi. Even there, trouble seemed to follow. Christian was forced to put the shooting skills he learned in the guild to work, defending the Heart of Gold alongside his fellow whores and a group of mercenaries. During the fight, though, Nandi died. Some looked to Christian, as a former companion, to lead. Instead, Christian ran.
Physical Appearance
Beautiful. Christian comes from good stock and is, honestly, a touch vain about his appearance. One of the few allowances he's made himself since leaving the Guild is to make sure he dresses as well as possible, under the circumstances. So far, his wardrobe's survived. So far.
Psychological Profile
Christian has been trained to be non-judgemental, calm, and compassionate. He didn't abandon those ideals when he left the Guild. He truly believes in them and does his best each and every day to understand each person as an individual and each problem as a temporary obstacle that can be overcome. His preference is always a non-violent solution but he realizes that's not always possible.
ASSETS<br>
* Allure (d8): Christian's parents were both companions. He was a companion. It is, honestly, more than just being good looking. Christian has been so trained in how to present himself, both psychologically and physically, that it is instinct to be as alluring and attractive as possible.
* Highly Educated (d6): As part of companion training, Christian has received education in a wide variety of topics. Companions are expected to be able to converse with a client on any subject with eloquence and intelligence.
* Leadership (d6): While he has, so far, shied away from a leadership role, the truth is Christian has a natural talent for helping others. Had he stayed a companion he likely would have ended up an instructor.
* Steady Calm (d4): It takes a lot to rattle Christian. In his entire life, he has only lost his cool once.
* Talented (d6): Children are selected by the guild because they are beautiful, yes, but always because they are intelligent and possess a certain... something. Even at the age of twelve, there's the spark that will eventually evolve into seductive talent.
* Licensed Companion (d8): Christian was re-licensed and enjoys all the benefits of being a Companion, including access to the Guild database and access to a good source of income.
<br>
COMPLICATIONS<br>
* Branded (d6): When a Companion kills a client, word gets around. The elite of the Core and, perhaps, beyond, will have heard of the scandal and might very well treat Christian accordingly.
* Credo (d4): Words mean something. Christian knows this. That's why he always keeps his. A promise, a contract, they're important.
* Deadly Enemy (d6): While he isn't wanted by the authorities, there's still a powerful political family out there who aren't happy with Christian because of the death of one of their favorite sons.
* Loyal (d6): Christian was so loyal to the Guild that he left when he believed he had shamed them. He's likely to transfer that loyalty to another group.
* Memorable (d8): Companions aren't trained to blend in. Christian could no more hide his allure than he could learn to breathe water.
<br>

The rose gives her pause, since Arden's been sleeping in her quarters off and on the whole trip from Osiris... but this isn't really his style. Nika picks up the flower and puts it to her nose, inhaling the fragrance for a long moment. Then she puts it into a small glass of water and goes looking for the man who left it, starting with his quarters.

In fact, Christian sits in his bunk, reading a copy of the Story of O on his datapad. He's dressed in a pair of boxers (red silk) and a black, short silk kimono.

When she knocks, Nika waits for his invitation to enter and then steps into the room. Her blue eyes on him are wary and still shuttered. "Thank you," she says quietly. "It's lovely."

Christian glances up. "You deserve it." He says, softly. He presses a button to mark his page and then sets the datapad down. He moves, slipping to the side on his bed so there's space for Nika to sit without being smooshed up against him.

Shaking her head a little bit, Nika doesn't take the proffered seat, choosing instead to lean against the bulkhead next to the bed instead Christian pauses, considering his words. "I went too far before. I pushed too hard and I'm sorry."

Leaning against the wall, Nika puts her head back against it as well turning it sideways so that she's looking in his general direction but not quite directly at him. "Too far is... a bit of an understatement," she replies softly.

The hurt of what she percieves as what he said runs deep. "You're entitled to your opinion, though, and I did ask you to say what you meant. So if I don't like what I hear, I got nobody to blame but myself."

"I didn't mean what you heard, but that doesn't excuse what happened." Christian's voice is gentle. "That's the problem with human interaction. Words don't always mean the same thing to the person who hears them as they do to the person who says them. I never meant to imply you were a whore, Nika.

Now she does look at him. "Arden is very clear with me about his feelings, and I've been very clear with him about mine. I both like and respect the man, and he is not a replacement for anyone. No matter what you think," Nika says

quietly and clearly. "The fact that you think I'm using him somehow bothers me far more than it ought to. I /thought/ you knew me better than that. But maybe I've become overly reliant on your judgment of people."

"We never know ourselves as well as we would like. Our motives are never as clear as they should be." Christian says, "Who knows. Maybe part of what I said was to cause a wedge. Maybe I'm jealous. It is possible."

Nika eyes him, clearly skeptical. "That's ridiculous," she scoffs gently. "You have to have far deeper feelings for someone than you do for me to be jealous."

Christian shrugs his shoulders. "I'm postulating. It is possible. I'm not always sure how deep my feelings for you go."

"I don't understand you," Nika finally says quietly. "On the one hand, you seem so sure of people. And now you're theorizing on your own motives. That doesn't precisely inspire confidence."

Christian chuckles. "It is always easier to define someone else's motives than it is your own, Nika. You must have figured that out by now. I'm guessing it was always easier to know your sister than to know yourself."

Nika eyes him and finally moves to settle in to sit on his bunk, still outside of range to (for example) rest her head on his shoulder, but at least it's a start. "My concern is that you think you know what I want and need, and

Rina thinks /she/ knows what I want and need, and the whole damn lot of you are underestimating Arden and getting involved in a relationship that.... really isn't anyone's business. And if it keeps being an issue, I'm just going to have to put an end to it... and I would regret having to do that before Arden and I are both ready for it."

"I don't know what you want or what you need." Christian says, "Except this. You need to question yourself and your motivations. You need to examine why you are doing this. Sex is never just about sex. Even for a Companion. That is all I want. All I have ever wanted you to do in this."

She looks sideways at him. "I feel comfortable enough with my own motives in this and his to continue on as we are for now," Nika replies. "But if you're going to keep at me about Brian, it's going to drive a wedge between me and you. Whatever I have with Brian is what it is. What I have with Arden is not the same relationship, and I wouldn't want it to be -- but it satisfies both of us right now. And it's not merely about the sex, though that's nice enough to have."

Christian nods his head. "Okay." He smiles, "As long as you've looked into your heart and mind and soul about this and you're sure, I'm satisfied."

Nika studies him. The hurt hasn't entirely gone away and likely won't for some time. But she's willing to forgive.

"I'm sorry that our argument went public the way it did," she says mildly. "It's been festerin' for quite some time. Guess I better call off the Russian hit squad," she quips with a faint grin.

Christian laughs. "Public?" He says. "It was caught on video for posterity, Nika." He reaches out and pats her hand. "Don't worry. I can take a little public humiliation."

Nika blushes visibly. "Yeah.... that was just not well handled. I don't...." She hesitates and then confesses with a small smile, "I'm not exactly in best form when I'm right pissed off."

Christian smothers a smile. "Just tell me you forgive me and I'm content."

"I'm gettin' there," Nika tells him with a grin. She can tell he's trying not to laugh -- not like she doesn't know most of her own flaws, after all.

Christian winks and says. "Now, go on. Get out before you're tempted to do something wicked and disrespectful. I'm in lingerie, for gosh sakes!"

Nika rolls her eyes and climbs off the bunk, heading out of his room. "Night, Christian," she says with a smile.

Londinium is not that far away, and once the ship leaves Osiris Nika doesn't leave the bridge except briefly to see Rick and make sure he's all right. Trusting a politico in the Core sort of goes against the grain for her, and considering the /rest/ of the information that came to light, Nika's got a lot on her mind. Sitting in the bridge with a cup of coffee, she's watching the instruments and pondering... some might even call it brooding.

"I owe Rick and Arden an apology. You and Rina as well." Christian says as he steps onto the bridge. He shuts the door behind them. This is something he doesn't want their reality film maker hearing.

Nika looks up from the viewport she was studying and asks in surprise, "You do?" She can't think of anything he's done that would require an apology. "What for?"

"If we had left Osiris right away, as Arden wanted, none of this would have happened." Christian notes. He settles down in the co-pilot's seat.

There's a grimace at that. "Well... on the one hand, you're right. But you needed to take care of some things, and we can't just avoid Osiris altogether. Your parents are there. And that's important. On the other hand, if we hadn't gone, we wouldn't know some of what we know now... and we have someone who may be an extremely useful ally." Nika pauses. "Of course... we're starting to tread into territory that some of us were leery with before. The kind of shadow territory where everything's a conspiracy."

Christian stares out at the stars. Londinium shows up as a green dot, brighter than any star except the sun itself. He's silent for a good, long while. "I've wondered about this. Look at us. None of us belong on this ship, in a perfect world. We're all too skilled. Too talented."

Nika sips from her coffee cup and says, "I don't think there's such a thing as 'too talented,' but ... the Universe lands you where you're supposed to be at any given time. It's why I stayed." She smiles faintly. "If I'd gone when you offered me the out, hooked back up... there wouldn't be anyone heading for Blue Sun right now to pull their fat outta the fire, would there?"

Christian mmms, thoughtfully. "My point exactly. Think of the coincidences. Rina's lover is captured forcing us to become involved with chempliant and the pax. Arden's entire existence seems to tied to it in some way. Your lover and old crew are on a ship investigating it. My client happens to work for the man who sent them on that investigative run."

"Wheels within wheels, all spinning at their own pace in random directions," Nika says quietly, looking out the viewport again.

"Karma." Christian adds. "I must wonder, what we all did in a past life to nail our destinies together so."

Nika chuckles at that. "If you believe in such things, the people you happen upon in each life are the same people you'll travel the circle of life with throughout the ages. In different relationships in each incarnation, but still... the soul being eternal, it seems to make sense that the relationships that are most important will remain from life to life."

He can't help it. Too easy to make the dig. Too easy to segue into the topic. It is a big, shiny button begging to be pressed. "Such as Brian and yourself."

Subtle tension immediately tightens Nika's body language. "Such as all of you," she replies mildly, sipping her coffee.

"The eyes." Christian says. "And the corners of your mouth. Also, the way your fingernails go white around the coffee mug."

Nika slants him a look. "Pardon?" she asks blankly.

Christian explains. "How I can tell I hit a sensitive spot and you were trying to change the topic."

Nika sighs and moves to set the cup down. "Why do you keep bringing him up?" she asks, resisting the urge to get up and pace.

"You're in love with him." Christian says, his voice growing soft. "And that terrifies you for some reason."

Now she does get up and walk. "Good Lord, Christian!" she exclaims. "Knock it off. Brian and I've got history, sure. And maybe we've even got a relationship or something. But I'm not in love with him, and he's not in love with me. We're just... we just *are*, that's all. It works because neither one of us tries to make the other into something we're not. And there's no expectation between us except friendship." Nika looks at him. "Is this why you're always watching and worrying about me and Arden? Cuz you think... what? That I'm using him?"

Christian stays still, watching Nika pace in the small space of the bridge. "Do you think you are?"

Glaring at him, Nika says firmly, "No. He and I have been very clear with one another. And it bothers the crap out of me that you're harping on this. Why are you doing it?"

"The human capacity for self-deception exceeds all his, or her, other skills." Christian says as he rises to his feet. "You are constantly saying what you want when it comes to Brian and Arden but not what you actually have. You can only bite into a green apple with your eyes closed and pretend it is a red apple for so long, Nika. Eventually, you're going to have to face the fact that it is green."

Staring at him, Nika looks blank once more. "I don't even know what that means." She sighs. "Look... you remember when you asked me if I wanted kids?" Back when he was sick, she means. "Seems to me that being in love with someone only has one of two ends when it comes to those of us who live in the Black, Christian -- you wind up with a relationship like Rina and Mike's, where you sort of dance around one another and try not to be hurt and live by a don't ask, don't tell mentality about what the other is doing when you're not near. Or you give up the Black. And neither of those really apply to me...." And now she sounds uncertain and unhappy, as if the words "do they?" are tacked on the end where before she was actually quite content with her life as she saw it. And on some level, she's angry at him for making her feel this way ... and angry that his opinion actually matters.

Christian stands up and looks at Nika, a bit sadly. 'You've spent much of your life defying expectations and carving out your own path and your own way to do things. Why would you let society tell you how to do this one thing when you won't let it control anything else?"

Nika eyes him. "That's exactly my point," she says in confusion. "I like what I have with Arden. And I like what I have with Brian. I don't see any need to make it either more or less than it is. You're the one who keeps harping on the 'in love' thing."

Christian walks towards the door. "Honesty with yourself is the hardest kind, Nika. Maybe you should listen to what your stars are singing about your feelings."

There's a growl. "You make me crazy. And you're ridiculously confusing. Just come out and say what you mean, will you?" Nika demands.

"You're in love with Brian." Christian says. "And you are using Arden as a substitute because you're horny and because you're trying to convince yourself that you can have what you have with Brian with any man you find sexually attractive and emotionally appealing. It will hurt all three of you in the long run."

Nika looks like he slapped her for an instant, and then the shutters come down and her expression returns to neutral. Her chin lifts in an unconscious movement, her pride not wanting him to see just how deeply that cut. "I see. Well, I did ask you to say what you think," she tells him mildly, and then heads back toward her chair to sit down. "It's good to know where we stand."

"We stand next to each other." Christian says gently, "I will always be there for you. You know that. I'm sorry what I said hit you like that but..." He shakes his head and opens the door. "You know where to find me if you need me."

Character Sheet
ATTRIBUTES<br>
Agility d8<br>
Strength d4<br>
Vitality d8<br>
Alertness d10<br>
Intelligence d10<br>
Willpower d8<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>

The cockpit's been her favorite place since the ship took off, though that's not exactly out of the norm for her. Nika's got her boots propped on the console and the Cortex off -- she's humming under her breath, the tune seemingly random notes but melodic enough, with her head tipped back and her eyes closed. It's that sense of displaced air that everyone who spends time alone gets that alerts her to someone coming through the cockpit door. She opens her blue eyes and looks toward the hatch.

"Music of the stars?" Christian asks. He's carrying a cup of steaming water in one hand and a tea bag in the other. "I thought you might want this. After protein paste for ten days, a little flavor might be welcome."

There's a soft laugh as she reaches up to take the cup from him, appreciative of the tea bag that he brought with him. "Something like that," she admits. "Thank you. How're things holding up back there?"

Christian glances back for a moment, before he settles into the co-pilot's seat. "Arden seems to be coping well. Rina... will heal with time. Rick is a survivor by nature. He's dealt with worse."

Nika doesn't seem inclined to get up or really to say a lot. She puts the tea bag into the hot water and lets it steep for a few minutes. "Good," is her only reply.

Christian turns to look out into the stars. "So." He says. "Want to go to my room and have sex?" He says it in the same manner one might say, "Wanna go shoot hoops?"

Maybe she just plain doesn't intend to answer him. Maybe she didn't hear him. It's hard to tell with her eyes toward the viewports and her hand absently toying with the tea bag in her cup. Finally she takes the tea bag out, very carefully placing it on the saucer that came with her cup and leaving both saucer and tea bag on the console's flat counter next to her elbow. She sips the tea briefly and finally asks, "Why do you do that?"

Christian smiles, "Because I know you'll see through it." He kicks his feet up onto the console. "And because you need something to jar you a bit. You've been wallowing for days now. You died. You need time to reflect. That's why I haven't said anything for the last ten days... but we need you. Rina, especially. There are some things only a woman can help another woman work through."

Glancing toward him, Nika raises a single eyebrow. "I'm not wallowing," is all she says, though her brow raise is clearly a query as to what's going on with Rina.

"The assault by Potempkin came right after," Christian says, softly, "but Rina still had to let go of Mike. Worse, tell him no when he proposed."

Nika nods slightly, her eyes turning toward the viewports again as she sips her tea. "I kinda figured when she came back that something like that happened. That one of them put the other off." Because before that, Rina had been pretty much accepting of the fact that they'd go their ways whenever it was necessary. "She's not going to talk about Mike. Most assuredly not to me. He's a topic we ... steer clear of." She glances at him.

Christian sighs, softly. "I think you're wrong there. I think she wants you to talk to her about him. I don't think she holds what you and Mike did against you or him."

"I don't think she holds it against me," Nika says slowly, testing the words on her own tongue. There's a hesitance there, as if she's not entirely sure she believes that. "Just... " The nightmares that plagued her when they first took off are finally slowing, but some things linger. "I'll talk to her if you think I ought -- you're the person in charge of the mental well-being of this crew."

"I think it might be a good idea." Christian says. He stares out into the stars as they move, slowly, despite the great speed of the ship. "Thank you for coming back to us, mei mei."

There's a sudden tension in the room, Nika's entire body tightening with shock, the hot tea sloshing as she bobbles the cup. "Please.... don't call me that," she chokes, her throat suddenly tight. "I never went anywhere."

Christian draws his feet off the console and turns to face Nika. "Did he call you that?" There's no questioning as to who "he" is.

There's true surprise in her features when she looks up at him, only a hint of tears. "My friend Harry.... she used to call me 'xiao mei,'" she tells him. "It makes me miss them." She pauses. "I'm not sure what you think Mike and I had, but it damn sure wasn't a relationship, Christian. It was ... the right person at the right time to keep nightmares at bay." Her assumption on who 'he' might be and the defensiveness are perhaps more telling than she'd like.

Christian nods his head, some relief on his features. "I was worried it was your sister's husband. I had this horrible image of someone twisting something beautiful into something horrible."

Nika relaxes just a little and even laughs. "He didn't usually call me much but bi (OOC: Cunt), saobi (lewd cunt; bitch), you get the drift," she tells him mildly.

Christian snorts. "He needed lessons, then. There are much better ways to speak dirty to someone."

Her laughter is soft. "He wasn't terribly imaginitive," Nika admits. "I always wondered what Nala really saw in him anyway." She's kind of glad he didn't follow up on the other part of what she said. Sipping her tea again, she says quietly, "No... it just surprised me that you'd use that derivation. It reminded me of Harry." She grins a little. "She's a piece of work, that one. I wish you'd gotten to meet her when we were onplanet."

Christian can't help but smile, seeing Nika smile. "It fits. I call my friend Max that, sometimes... though less when we began the more physical training in the Guild. I'm sure I'll meet your friend again. Once we have everything settled, why don't we go look for them?"

Nika looks up at him and says quietly, "We have a couple of other things to take care of, but... I'd like to deal with that, yes. Let's see what's what when we get to Bernadette. I'd like to handle the situation with Nguyen, as well. We don't need the rumor mill getting worse and worse."

Christian nods his head in agreement. "Alright. That sounds like a good idea. Now." He says, getting to his feet. "I need your help. Come on."

Looking puzzled, Nika swallows the last of the tea in her mug in a big gulp, ignoring that it's still quite warm, and shoves herself to her feet. She's still moving stiffly, though it's not nearly as bad as it was a week ago. "What's up?"

“I want to get into better shape." Christian says. "Specifically my upper body. I've been neglecting that. I need someone to spot me while I work on our weight machine."

"I hope you're not planning on using much weight at all," Nika tells him. "Arden will skin me if I damage all his hard work."

"Low weight, high reps." Christian assures Nika as he leads the way to the back of the ship, "I prefer to keep my present physique. Wearing a dress isn't all that attractive when you have large biceps."

Nika eyes him and just shakes her head. "Where I come from, you do know that men don't wear dresses, right?" she says as she follows him.

"Where you come from, men aren't pretty enough to." Christian says cheerfully.

Nika snickers. "If we go to Boros, I highly recommend you keep *that* opinion to yourself and wear trousers, or they may take it upon themselves to teach the girly-man a little somethinsomethin about 'how we do things on the Rim.'" The last is said in a VERY drawling tone of voice.

if you don't want me seducing your menfolk I'll dress appropriately. I own a wonderful pair of cowboy boots, though."

Looking at him sideways, Nika merely rolls her eyes at him. "You'd look like a fairy in cowboy boots. A complete greenhorn. And they'd laugh you off the ranch."

Christian smiles. "I reckon some things just ain't for city folk." He mock puts an imaginary hat to his heart. "I'm sorry, Miss Nika. You and me, we're just too different to make it work. You're all horses and grit and I'm all glass and concrete."

She rolls her eyes again at him. "You are a complete ham. You do realize that, right? I can't take anything you say seriously." Nika follows him toward the lounge where the weight bench is Are you really as gender neutral as you seem?" she asks. Maybe it's a personal question, but whatever.

Christian strips off his shirt, revealing a nicely toned, though not overly muscled, chest and settles down on the weight bench. The rear lounge is empty, with the three other crew members off working on individual projects elsewhere. "I'm a man." He says, "Biologically and psychologically. I enjoy wearing women's clothing, though. The fashions are usually more beautiful, visually, and there's more variation. Men have pants, shirts, and occasionally kilts. Women have skirts, dresses, pants, leotards, catsuits..."

Nika clears her throat and says quietly, "I do hope you won't take this the wrong way, Christian. But .... you're a man genetically and all, but I ain't NEVER met a 'man' like you. The men I know would just as soon beat you up because you're sort of.... girly. Like that statement right there! 'Men' in my world just don't wear women's clothing. I don't mean to offend, and I truly apologize if I have."

Christian laughs. "Men in my world don't tend to, either. Most of them don't wear make-up or have sex with other men as well as women. I'm a bit unique, I admit. I just don't see why I shouldn't enjoy everything that's out there to enjoy. Women have it easier than men, of course. Say you see a shirt at a store. It is clearly marked as a man's shirt, but you like it and it'll fit. Would it being in the men's section keep you from buying it?"

"Well... no. But then, no one would look at me oddly for it, either," Nika replies. "And in most places, you're definitely going to get looks. At least places on the Rim." She's not so sure about the Core.

"Generally, when we're out in those places, I wear men's clothes and very little makeup." Christian notes. "I don't want to get beat up. But I also refuse to allow society to dictate what I should enjoy or be. As a companion, it was easier to get away with it."

Nika nods slowly. "Yeah, I can see that. Because Companions have a good bit of leeway to work with in that regard, it seems." She shrugs a bit. "Don't get me wrong, I'm getting used to you these days so I don't think too much of it -- except when you toss sex into the conversation. And well.... the more I get to know you, the more I'm not really ever gonna go that direction with you." She glances at him. "And I almost feel like I ought to apologize for //that// too."

Christian stops in his lifts, lowering the weight bar onto its rest. "Because you're not ready to hop on me right now and ride me until I'm broken and wet?" He laughs. "I admit, I've had some lustful fantasies about you but as time goes on, I'm realizing how important it is we don't become lovers."

There is a roll of her blue eyes as he says that, and Nika actually has to laugh at him. "Yes, Christian, because I am not now, nor do I think I will //ever// be able to imagine hopping on you and riding you until you're broken and wet." She shakes her head. "//Shi//, man.... you have this absurdly candid way of phrasing yourself that ALWAYS throws me!"

Christian grins. He can't help it. "You're a touch puritanical about sex. Not that you won't have it but you're like a lot of people. You separate it from the rest of your life as much as possible."

"Hey, I'll have it, but it's got nothing to //do// with the rest of my life most of the time. It's a good way to have some fun, get closer to someone I feel like being close to, and relax." Nika shrugs a bit and admits, "Maybe with the right person, it's more than that. But it's not the be-all, end-all of my activity and I kinda like my private stuff private."

Christian shakes his head. "Except its not. Its a component of your relationships and your interactions, its part of how advertisers and publishers try to cater to you, its a factor in how you pick out and buy your clothing... it is a pervasive part of life."

"Be that as it may, I don't particularly think my own preferences and such should be for public consumption. It's... personal. I don't feel the need to flaunt either my self or my sexuality all that much." She grins a bit. "There's a time and a place to be a girl."

"Yes, there is. I always enjoy my time and place for being a girl." Christian begins lifting again, pressing up on just ten pounds of weight. Very low, very high rep.

Nika just facepalms and then settles on a bench to watch him idly.

Christian continues to press the weights up, then lower them down. "If you're interested in Arden, I think you will have to make the next move."

Crossing her arms in an instinctively protective gesture over her chest, Nika nods slightly. "Maybe. Not sure I'm gonna make that move either," she admits.

Christian glances over. He didn't miss that. "I understand that." He says as he continues his reps. "Probably better we focus on business right now, anyway."

"Yeah, probably," Nika replies. She nibbles her lip a bit. "Going back to Bernadette not in full fighting form worries me a good bit," she admits. "It's Potemkin's stronghold."

"I know. If this were a Cortex drama, we'd be on our way to a final confrontation with our arch enemy." Christian says. "And he's a dramatic enough guy to want that."

With a smirk, Nika replies, "Well, if we're living a drama, here's hoping the resolution goes in our favor, yes?"

Christian nods. "Amen to that."

Nika smirks faintly and then moves to get up. "So.... just so you know, I'm okay." Because after all, he came to drag her out of the cockpit and all.

Christian lowers the weight bar once more and sits up. "Okay."

Nika eyes him. "'Okay' I believe you, 'okay' if you say so but I'm skeptical, or 'okay' I've decided you're lying and it's my job to fix you?"

Okay." Christian says. "I believe you."

There's a grin, and Nika ruffles him as she goes by. "Okay, good." She will be okay... she's getting a bit better every day. "I'll get out of the cockpit more, I promise."

My Dearest High Priestess,

Your last words to me continue to echo in my head.

“Did you sack yourself to satisfy our honor? Or your own?”

For many months now, I have spent time among people who are willing to fight for their beliefs and die for the people they love. They have become like family to me and they have taught me many lessons. Two stand out, though.

1) Family protect each other. They share their problems and, in sharing, the burden of their problems is diminished.

2) There are times when defending others, and yourself, is not proper but necessary.

I believed I was leaving the Guild to protect it from the anger of the Camden family. That was self-deception. In truth, I left the Guild to punish myself. I had taken a life during a sacred time. My guilt clouded my judgement.

Your wisdom humbles me. Your insight into my soul and your gentle method of leading me to the truth show a level of skills as a companion I can only hope to aspire to.

I do wish to aspire to that level, though. If there is a way, I ask that my license and membership be reinstated.

My eternal love, always,

Dearest Maxine,

I hope my letter finds you well. Mom and dad send their love. Mom, especially, is eager for you to visit the next time you are on Osiris. I suspect she needs a model to test her latest fashion designs and she has always said you have the perfect form.

I visited them myself, just a week ago. It seems as if they have sold some of the art in the house. I wonder if I should be worried about their financial situation. Have they said anything to you? I realize my parents wouldn't want me to worry, but I really think I should know. Please, if you know anything, share.

I also visited the temple, while I was on Osiris. I was honored to spend time in the company of the priestess. I can't believe how much I had forgotten about her. Not her beauty, of course. Few women in the 'Verse, even among our ranks, could compare.

No, I forgot the smell and taste of vanilla. How fond she was of it. The lingering scent of it around her neck and the taste of it on her lips and... other places.

I'm pleased to say I performed to her satisfaction. Apparently I haven't lost too many of my skills since leaving the Guild.

I suppose before I go on, I should relate this tale. I had a market encounter with representatives of a certain family. You know the ones. Afterwards, they ensured that we had trouble with the port authority and potential employers. It ended up costing my fellow shipmates money and time we couldn't afford. I felt horrible.

I related the story to the priestess and she just smiled.

“Will you be leaving this ship, then?” she asked me.

I told her I wouldn't be. I disliked putting my crewmates in that situation but we had become family. Their problems were mine, as mine were their's.

“I see. Wasn't the Guild your family, too?” she asked me.

I didn't have an answer. She saw I was flustered and leaned in to kiss me on the cheek.

“I know why you think you left the Guild, dearheart.” she told me before leaving me alone with my thoughts, “I wonder, though. Did you sack yourself to satisfy our honor? Or your own?”

The question has echoed in my mind since.

I must go. I will write again when I've worked out the answer.

My love, eternally,
ATTRIBUTES<br>
Agility d4<br>
Strength d8<br>
Vitality d8<br>
Alertness d10<br>
Intelligence d12<br>
Willpower d6<br>
<br>
ASSETS<br>
* Highly Educated (d6): Alden excelled in school, he actually paid attention to the teachers, and retained what he learned. He wanted to learn. Comes in handy during social events and gameshow appearances, though his extensive booklearning can sometimes makes Alden stand out on a Border planet.<br>Benefit: You gain a +2 step Attribute bonus to Intelligence for any Knowledge-based Skill roll when you try to recall some information (though it won’t help you when you’re taking actions). For example, if you are a doctor trying to match someone’s symptoms to a particular disease, you receive the bonus; it does not apply to rolls affecting your treatment of the patient.
* Nose for Trouble (d6): Arden’s got a mental alarm that sounds when something’s about to go wrong. He's always been able to tell when a no-good guay toh guay nown is lying his ass off and a creepy feeling that someone is standing behind that door lying in the wait.<br>Benefit: You can make an Intelligence- or Alertness-based roll to sense trouble even when circumstances might not normally permit it (you’re dancing at a hoe-down), and you gain a +2 step bonus to either Attribute when the circumstances warrant (you’re sneaking into the hide-out of the local crime boss). As a Major Trait, you may also spend 1 Plot Point to negate all effects of surprise, as you sense trouble just in the nick of time to avoid getting caught with your trousers down.
<br>
COMPLICATIONS<br>
* Amorous (d4): Sex might not be the only thing on Alden's mind, but it definitely ranks up there at the top. Alden's always chasing skirts and looking to find intimate companionship whenever possible.<br>Penalty: You’ll make a pass at almost any person of your sexual preference and you don’t put up any barriers when someone is coming on to you. This can cause a –2 step Skill penalty to Influence-based actions when the other party is offended by your advances. You also suffer a –2-step Willpower Attribute penalty when attempting to resist the wiles of someone who is your “type.”
* Deadly Enemy (d2): Alden has made himself a dangerous enemy— someone who’ll go to great lengths to either capture or kill him. Too bad that Alden has absolutely no idea who that enemy is. He suspects that it is someone from his home colony, but it is only a suspicion, not a confirmed fact.<br>Penalty: Someone is out to get you. You don’t have to specify the nature of your nemesis, though your personal background may provide you or the GM with ideas. Your enemy might be extremely powerful and dangerous, posing a direct threat every 3 to 5 adventures, at the GM’s discretion. You’ll never be completely free of the danger until you buy off this Complication—so even if you think you’ve gotten rid of your enemy, the threat remains in one form or another at the discretion of the GM. For example, if you kill a major enemy, his brother or best friend will swear vengeance and take up the hunt.
* Straight Shooter (d2): Normally considered a virtue, honesty is not always the best policy—especially in diplomacy, business, or barrooms. Alden hasn't learned this yet.<br>Penalty: You speak the truth without regard for other people’s feelings, or the circumstances involved. You might consider telling a falsehood only in dire emergencies, and even then you suffer a –2 step Skill penalty to Influence-based actions, as your lie is written all over your face.
<br>
SKILLS<br>
* Covert d6: Sneaky maneuvers, usually illegal. You can use this Skill to move silently, hide, blow a safe, or pick someone’s pocket.
** Open Locks d8
** Disable Device d8
* Guns d6: Anyone might be able to squeeze a trigger, but that’s not the same thing as actually knowing how to shoot. The ‘Verse is a dangerous place, and it’s best not to strap on iron unless you have the know-how needed to use it.
** Pistols d8
* Medical Expertise d6: You know what they say: "there are always places to see, people to break". And when folk do break, you’ll be there to put ‘em back together with your bag of modern medical wonders. You can slap an aid-strip on a scratch and tell them to take two aspirins in the morning without this Skill, but anything more serious requires medical school, internships, residency, and knowing when to holler "clear!"
** General Practice d8
** Pharmacology d10
** Internal Medicine d8
** surgery d10
* Perception d6: This Skill helps you pick up on subtleties in your surroundings. You notice little things such as the tiny crack on the marble floor that less attentive folk could easily miss. Can’t slip a gnat past you, if you get really good at it. Naturally, you can’t take certain Specialties that rely on a particular sense if you are partially or fully disabled in that sense—awfully hard to justify takin' "sight" when you’re blind, for instance–although a blind person might take this Skill in hearing. Note that Skill use against other characters is opposed, so some of the following examples could vary in actual play.
** intuition d10
** investigation d8
* Planetary Vehicles d6: Your ability to drive, operate, and maintain vehicles used planetside—on the ground, on or under water. Most folks are capable of driving a car, steering a boat, or riding a horse, but when things get a mite tricky, you’ll need to roll the dice to see how well you perform. Note that basic maintenance for vehicles is covered under this Skill. Serious repairs must be performed by those with Mechanical Engineering.
* Technical Engineering d6: With this Skill you can use machines that run on complicated electronics and computerized components, as well as engage in computer hacking and programming. You can wave-order deliveries and open programs without this Skill, though anything more complicated, and you’ll be staring at a screenful of error logs.
** Computer Programming d8
** Hacking d8
* Unarmed Combat d4: They say never hit a man with a closed fist, but it is—on occasion—necessary. And sometimes nothing brings more satisfaction to one’s soul than delivering a good old-fashioned punch to the jaw. For those who relish those occasions, this is the skill to use, whether it’s a knee to the groin, kick to the shin, hook to the chin, chop to the throat or gouge to the eye. Note that while Unarmed Combat doesn’t involve the use of weapons, this and the Brawling specialty can allow you to use weapons of opportunity (beer bottles, etc.).

From the journal of Christian Edge...
<br><bR>
I admit, I am beginning to wonder if something about me just attracts problems. First Osiris, then the mess at the Heart of Gold and now this...
<br><bR>
Let me explain. I have been hired by Potemkin Colonial Services as a steward aboard their flagship, the MakeMake. Or, at least, that would be the title I bestowed upon myself. I perform, essentially, those duties, cooking and tidying up, trying to look after the psychological welfare of the crew and those colonists heading for the Rim.
<br><bR>
That, of course, would not be the trouble. Gainful and legal employment never is by itself. My problem stems from my legal employment straying into what is likely illegal territory. I get ahead of myself, though...
<br><bR>
There are four of us aboard this ship who aren't old hands. Myself, a pilot named Nika, a man named Arden who is aboard as a passenger, and a temporary engineer named Marina. There are also quite a few colonists but they stay in their respective modules, waiting to be deposited on the soil of their new home.
<br><bR>
Nika was hired as a backup pilot, as I understand it. Someone to take a second shift so the bridge is manned at all times. I suspect, however, that there is more to her story than might meet the eye. There exists an air of authority around her one would not expect to find in a simple pilot.
<br><bR>
Arden seems a curious sort. And by that, I don't mean he is a mystery, though he is. No, I mean he seems curious about what goes on around him. Marina, aboard simply to fix a few mechanical difficulties and not as a full-time mechanic, has obviously had difficulties with men in her past. I have been especially careful to avoid any appearance of impropriety around her, for worry that she might take offense... and then perhaps take my head as well.
<br><bR>
As I said, there were four of us aboard who were not either colonists or a long serving crew member. Perhaps that explains why we gravitated towards each other when the crisis began. I admit feeling more kinship for these three than I do for most of the others.
<br><bR>
Things turned south when, partway through our journey, we slowed down. Dropped from hard burn, I believe is the correct term, and changed course. For various reasons, the four of us gravitated towards the bridge. Myself, I followed Arden. I did say he was the curious sort and perhaps his curiosity infected me as well. Briefly, we conferred, but were interrupted by the captain. He insisted Nika and I help move crates in one of the cargo modules. We were making room. The question was for what?
<br><bR>
I spoke to those crew members who were aiding in the task and put the pieces together quickly enough. Apparently the captain occasionally did business with one sort of criminal or another, stopping in the middle of space to meet another ship, taking aboard cargo, perhaps selling it later. The crew seemed quite upset about this. Not the illegality, mind. These are hard men who likely care little for the niceties of the Core. Rather, they were upset that the captain wasn't sharing the take from these side jobs with the crew. Even worse, the side trips make the MakeMake late. This incurres fees and adds expenses for extra fuel. That, of course, cut into profit and profit shares for the crew. It didn't take my Companion training to read the crew. Things were going to turn ugly if the MakeMake didn't move soon.
<br><bR>
I said as much to Arden, Nika, and Marina. They agreed and agreed it was only going to get worse. It turned out that the ship that was to meet us at this stop hadn't even been signaled. Nika and Marina had rigged the communications system to make it seem as if a beacon had been lit without lighting the beacon at all. Marina had sent a message to Josef Potemkin, the company's owner and the captain's brother, but as yet there was no definitive reply. The captain seemed determined to sit the ship in this spot until his contact came.
<br><bR>
Ideas were discussed. It seemed likely, in our minds, that a mutiny was boiling. The cost to human lives should the conflict spill over to the colonists was unacceptable, as was the loss to our employer. We did, after all, owe the company our loyalty in this situation.
<br><bR>
As I write, little has happened. The next meal is coming. At that time, our plan is to lace the food with sedatives. I have some chocolate I can use to make the food as attractive as possible. With luck, both captain and crew will be rendered unconscious. That will avoid trouble... at least for a while. Hopefully, it will be long enough for us to determine a proper course of action.
