Upon his birth, his mother died from labor and later his father went missing after being caught by a storm while out on his small canoe. So at an early age he had to go out and support himself and his two older sisters. Over the years he obtain a small bit of wealth obtaining pearls until the day he had to give away his oldest sister. The dowry taking most of the wealth he had collected. With the oldest sister gone and taking most of the wealth away. The relations between Dresu and the remaining sister didn't turn well. After one big fight the sister approached the tribe's leaders and accused Dresu of assaulting her, which was untrue. But such a scandal would not be good for the community that the tribal leaders gave Dresu a choice of be permanently exiled to a nearby deserted island or to navigate a selected group from the tribe to the mainland with the slim opportunity of returning to the island.
