=The Dungeoneers=
'''By Elliot'''

The dungeoneers is a minisetting for D&D 3.0. It may be more appropriate however to call it a game model as it can be dropped in almost any setting. It combines gritty low level play with a structured adventure model. In short, it’s “Regular Joes die their way through horrifying dungeons”.

This minisetting is broken into two parts. The first part is a section on characters, who the dungeoneers are and what they have mostly. The second part is called Topics of interest and covers a number of subjects relating to dungeoneers and what they do.

=Characters=
In the minisetting, the character choices are quite vast. This is actually to promote disharmony and oddity in the group. Unlike most adventuring parties, most of the drama in a dungeoneers game comes from the group trying to work together as a team, despite their differences.

==Race==
The only racial requirement is that a recruit must have a pulse, so no undead. In practice though, angels, demons and nonsentients are usually disallowed from the dungeoneers. Stereotypical evil races are fine however; the tension between a goblin and a dwarf PC can be a lot of fun. Some GMs however will prefer to only use the standard races. Most GMs will make sure the party is within an effective level or so of each other as well.

==Classes==
Encourage the PCs to pick the class they want to play. Druids and paladins are usually fairly rare in the dungeoneers, but this doesn’t stop the odd one from joining up. Fighters and rogues are generally the most numerous, followed by bards, sorcerers and wizards. In most games, mismatched race-class characters like kobold paladins seem stupid and absurd, but they would be valuable characters in a dungeoneers game.

==Alignment==
I feel it’s generally better to not restrict alignment in a dungeoneers game. Having wildly conflicting alignments can introduce inter-party tension which can make the game a whole lot more rewarding. A party of lawful good elves nervously asking for healing from Danita, their chaotic evil cleric of the slaughter god can make for some very interesting games. Of course, the dungeoneers are not paranoia troubleshooters and the game shouldn’t revolve around the characters trying to kill each other. You may want to advise evil characters to keep their nefarious deeds in area of cartoonish villainy to reduce the chances that other players will stop the aforementioned characters repugnant behavior once and for all.

==Background and Personality==
Background is actually less important then many D&D games, but should not be forgotten about completely. Backgrounds should not be long unless the character is weird enough to merit it, a paragraph should suffice.

Backgrounds should provide answers to two questions.

• History: What did you do before you became a dungeoneer?

• Motivation: Why did you become a dungeoneer?

History may be as short as a sentence or as long as a paragraph. All it does it describe what you did before you became a dungeoneer. “I was an orcish scout for the northern tribes.” or “I was a whore working in a brothel in the big city.” are both good backgrounds.

Motivation is the most important part of a background. It should explain why you became a dungeoneer. Money and the need to poverty are good motivations, as is fear. Some join the dungeoneers out of righteousness and community spirit and some just have an enormous death wish.

We have neglected personality so far, but in truth you built the core of your character’s personality with the motivation. Now just take a look at your attributes, class and race and come up with a fun concept that fits them and your background. Remember that many characters who become dungeoneers are not healthy people. It is usually not polite to make a really annoying character, but if you really want to, go for it. Just don’t be too surprised if the party leaves your butt at the bottom of that pit trap. Here are two example backgrounds and personalities that fit the two examples I made earlier in the section.

'''Krar:''' Krar was a scout for a northern orc tribe called the blue hands until they were destroyed by a plague of dire wolves. Krar went south to seek his fortune and rebuild his tribe when he got it. Joining the dungeoneers to get rich fast, Krar is a surly and greedy braggart.

'''Delia:''' Delia worked as a prostitute in one of the biggest cities in the land. She drunk away all the money she made and joined the dungeoneers to escape the prostitution trade. Delia is jovial and gregarious, hating to be alone. She is hoping to make enough money for her to retire and quit drinking, but she is finding more and more that she likes combat.

==Equipment==
Because of the “special circumstances” of most recruits, many dungeoneers start with next to nothing. Most D&D characters start out with halfway decent weapons, halfway decent armor and enough supplies to make it almost anywhere; most D&D characters yearn for magical items and exotic equipment. The dungeoneers is different. By severely restricting the amount of equipment they can have, the PCs will have to make do with what little they can buy and what they can salvage. In short, D&D characters yearn for material excellence and dungeoneer characters yearn for material competence.

Dungeoneer characters start with the following

• The clothes on your back and any personal effects

• One canteen full of water or beer

• 25 gold pieces for buying equipment

• A holy symbol (for clerics)

• Spellbook and bag of common spell components (for wizards and sorcerers)

• 1 Gold Medallion of the Queen’s Royal Squad of Dungeoneers (Do not pawn)

You may have characters buy their equipment separately or as a group. But beware, if you let them buy as a group, they will pool their money and use it much more efficiently. You can also have the characters do their shopping on-screen or off-screen, off-screen buying in generally a lot easier, but it precludes most attempts to steal things.

=Topics of Interest=

==Towns==
In short, a town is three things. It is a place to start adventures, it is a place to supply your players with equipment, healing and other services and finally, it acts as a great plot hook. Most small towns have a dungeoneer tower where the dungeoneers are assigned to live. Most small towns also have a wide range of things to sell to the dungeoneers. Towns are often in need of protection from orc hordes, troll bands, demon swarms and a million other evils. Try to pick a flavor for a town and keep it going session, so players come to see the town as a permanent object. Players can buy low grade magical items like scrolls, potions and lesser magic items in town, but must go to the big city if they want powerful magical gear.

==Keeps==
Keeps are the base from which the dungeoneers set out to their adventures. Usually placed in or around a town, the keep serves a place to store equipment, a place to sleep and a place to receive orders from superiors. Keeps are not always stone fortresses, but can be wooden tree forts, run down villas and even underground fortifications such as a former dungeon. Have your group of dungeoneers flesh out their place of residence. The dungeoneer’s commander usually dwells here.

==The Commander==
The commander is the dungeoneer team’s superior officer. It is they who describe and order the characters into dungeons. It is they who give out commendations and censures, as well as perform the inspections. Commanders are often stone hearted bastards, but the players need to suck up to them to get ahead.

==The City==
The city is a large settlement from which the dungeoneers receive their orders. Dungeoneers, at least most ones, do not start out in cities. The areas around the cities have already been cleaned out of dangerous dungeons. The city is the place to go when the dungeoneers find something really dangerous that they cannot defeat without aid. Some cities are happy and boisterous, some are orderly and staid and some are even dens of crime and iniquity. In emergency situations, cities may need protecting. well hells on wheels

==Dungeons==
Unsurprisingly, dungeons are the foundation of a dungeoneers adventure. They need not be underground, but often are. For this game, a dungeon is a confined space where the adventure happens, it could be a cave, a building or even a town. Some adventures may happen in places that are not confined, such as forests and plains. These “dungeonless” adventures are rarely handed out to the dungeoneers, but are always a good change of pace. Much work has been done on the subject of dungeons (as they are so common), the following work was compiled by the Valorous College of Dungeonography (VCD) in Valorium.

The most common type of dungeon is called an Underground Complex by the Valorous College of Dungeonography. These structures consist of a network of underground rooms and corridors. These structures may be natural cave formations, artificial hallways or even insect burrowed tubes. Never content at just one definition, the VCD has broken the Underground Complex definition into three different labels.

'''Natural Caves'''
Natural caves are underground areas that have been formed by any number of natural geologic processes. They are quite rarely encountered by dungeoneers simply because they tend to be structurally unforgiving to sentient beings. Floors are highly uneven, ceilings and walls are even worse, tunnels may shrink and widen randomly and there are usually no convenient sources of clean water and air. Natural caves rarely contain sentients, but often contain monsters, animals and the occasional hermit. Sometimes though, natural caves will harbor great finds as many assume that no one will brave their depths. Natural caves that are modified for sentient use become artificial caves.

'''Artificial Caves'''
Artificial caves are underground areas that have been hollowed out for some reason or another, by sentients or some other life form such as a giant worm. Artificial caves are also natural caves that have been heavily modified for use; in fact, most artificial caves start off as natural caves. Floors, ceilings and walls are usually fairly even (especially in well traveled areas) and there are often convenient sources of water nearby. The theorized underdark is supposed to be a huge artificial cave that connects numerous underground sites into a gigantic network. Artificial caves most likely comprise the bulk of dungeons in the lands.

'''Artificial Complex'''
This is what most people think of when they hear the word dungeon. They think of corridors filled with traps, connecting rooms filled with harrowing monsters. While artificial complexes are somewhat rare, they are the most common dungeon in dungeoneer missions. This is simply because artificial complexes are easier to control, easier to defend and are valuable to all that can control them. This means that the ownership of an artificial complex will change somewhat frequently, and these changes often bring dungeoneer teams.

==Dungeon Creation==
As a gamemaster creates a dungeon for the group to explore, they should remember a few things. But these things could most likely be summed up as “Create interesting and dangerous dungeons for this dungeon based game.” Here they are in further detail.

'''1. Random Dungeons'''
Firstly, resist the temptation to create random dungeons. I know it seems in keeping with the spirit of the minisetting, but it often creates very boring dungeons. Since this game is going to be about exploring dungeons, you need them to be interesting.

'''2. Interesting Environments'''
This brings me to my next point, interesting environments create interesting adventures. Dungeons can harbor almost any kind of terrain; use this to your advantage as a gamemaster. You could have the entire dungeon laid out along an underground stream. Or you could map the dungeon vertically like an anthill and have the players struggle to climb up and down the deep shafts common to such installations.

'''3. Plausibility'''
Plausibility is something that you can stretch very far in a dungeoneers game, but be careful not to break it entirely. It’s perfectly alright to have a bunch of weird things in your dungeons, but try and explain why they are there, at least a little bit.

'''4. Proper Antagonists'''
Proper antagonists will make or break a dungeoneers game. Find a theme and then run with it. It doesn’t really matter how serious or comical you play this up (within reason), as long as you have a theme and stick with it. You may want to have a wacky dungeon full of disparate monsters, or you may want just a bunch of sly kobolds or just about anything. But once you have the sly kobolds, don’t just drop in a beholder without an explanation why it’s there.

'''5. Size of the Dungeon'''
The size of the dungeon will largely determine how long it takes to play through. This is completely up to you. I find that the smaller kinds (10-20 rooms) are more appropriate to dungeoneer adventures as they are quick to get through and retain more of a “Series of missions” feel to them. But larger dungeons have more options and feel like more of an accomplishment. Make dungeons the size you want them to be.

==Adventure Order==
Dungeoneers adventures are rarely spontaneous and usually follow an ordered path. This is one of the defining parts of the dungeoneers and it is the thing that players will come to expect. However, you should feel free to break this structure every once and a while, just to keep players on their toes.

'''1. First Inspection'''
The inspection is the first part of a dungeoneers adventure. The players are presumably in their keep when they are rudely awakened by their commander. The commander inspects the keep and the players for rules violations, manners and cleanliness. This step is often skipped or done only once in a while in most dungeoneers games. Pay is also distributed at the end of this stage.

'''2. Orders and Information'''
This is the first real part of a dungeoneers adventure. The superior gives them their orders and any information they have about the dungeon in question. This probably includes a description of the dungeon, its history, its inhabitants, why the dungeoneers are needed and the how to get there. This information is often slightly inaccurate and less often completely false. The commander may also supply the dungeoneers with a map of the dungeon, although these maps are usually less accurate then the rest of the information. This map may be the map the players made last time they went to the dungeon and died.

'''3. Buying Supplies in Town'''
In this stage, the players get their gear and head out to town to buy any supplies they need. This may include rations, weapons, armor and other tools that may be useful in the dungeon. Follow the equipment guidelines and the town’s flavor to determine what is available. This stage is also a good time to get rumors and warnings about the dungeon from the townsfolk. Although sometimes very correct, these rumors are often as not wrong and even sometimes deliberately misleading. Some pre-made adventures will have a rumor table on them.

'''4. The Dungeon'''
This step encompasses the travel to and from the dungeon and the dungeon itself. It is the most important stage and almost always contains the narrative thread of an adventure. This may be as long or as short as you want. Adventure design is detailed elsewhere so I will not dwell on the adventure stage here.

'''5. Commendations and Censures'''
After whatever issue in the dungeon is resolved by the players, they will return back and report their work to the superior. Their commander assesses their success (or failure) and distributes to the players, commendations for excellent behavior and censures for substandard behavior. See the Commendations and Censures section for more details. This last stage wraps up the adventure and provides closure. It also gives you a chance to praise (or berate) player characters on their (in)competence.

==Commendations and Censures==
These are the rewards and punishments that commanders dole out to dungeoneer groups based on their performance or behavior. Since commanders can’t usually spy on dungeoneer groups in the field, most commendations and censures are based acts that the commander can see. There are both minor and major commendations and censures. Try not to use these too often, they are ways of pushing the players into doing good things (or not doing bad things).

'''Minor Commendations and Censures'''

Bringing in an enemy alive: 10 gp reward per enemy, 20 gp for important enemies.

Helping an ally not related to the mission: 20 gp reward.

Destroying a monster not related to the mission: 20 gp reward.

Rudeness to mission related persons: 5 gp penalty per infraction.

Insolence: 10 gp penalty per infraction.

Keeping dungeon loot for personal use: Confiscation of loot plus 5 gp penalty.

Letting mission related persons come to harm: 70 gp penalty.

Sloppy equipment: 5 gp penalty.

Deliberately injuring teammates: 10 gp penalty.

Deliberate cruelty to enemies: 20 gp penalty.

Slaughter of noncombatant enemies: 50 gp penalty.

'''Major Commendations and Censures'''

Acts above and beyond the call of duty: 100 to 1000 gp bonus or magical item.

Single handedly completing the entire mission: 400 gp, celebration.

Defending many innocents from certain death: 200 gp bonus, celebration.

Saving nobles unrelated to the mission from certain doom: 500 gp bonus, celebration.

Directly interfering with mission objectives: 50-200 gp penalty.

Besmirching the name of the Dungeoneers: 100-200 gp penalty, red body paint.

Letting mission related persons die: 500 gp penalty, a week in the stockades.

Inaction resulting in the death of team members: 100 gp penalty, a week in the stockades.

==Dungeoneer Rules==
Like most organizations, the dungeoneers has a number of rules that must be followed by its members. These rules are in place to ensure the organization works, to give power to the hierarchy, and finally, to protect the reputation of the dungeoneers and the kingdom it works for. There are many rules, but they can be summed up into three main points. This gives the GM a lot of freedom to add new rules or define existing ones to complicate the dungeoneer’s lives.

'''Death and Destruction'''
The dungeoneers are not supposed to cause undue death and destruction where it is not warranted. This might just say that dungeoneers are banned from killing random beings unrelated to the mission, or it might mean that all but the worst enemies should be brought back alive.

'''Loot'''
The dungeoneers are supposed to turn over any and all loot they find in a dungeon to the proper authorities, including potions, magical items, coins and other things. This one is sure to annoy players and it will cause much drama as they try to sneak loot out of the dungeon and past their commander. This is the reason the penalty for trying to keep loot is so low. Most spell books and scrolls are exempt from this loot rule.

'''Authority'''
The dungeoneers are supposed to listen to all superior officers and do their utmost to complete the missions their commander assigns. This rule also covers general manners.

==Rule of the Dice==
The rule of the dice is an important feature in a dungeoneers game. GMs should endeavor to follow the lead of the dice most of the time. The challenge a GM faces is to provide an interesting story around the results of the dice. However, sometimes the dice conspire to completely rob a game of fun. In these situations, the GM should intervene secretly to save the story, just make sure the players don’t find out.

==Heroics==
It may seem on a first read that a dungeoneers game is devoid of heroism, this is utterly false. Heroism is alive and well in any good dungeoneers adventure and it comes from two basic sources. The first is simply the fact that a dungeoneer is less likely to live as long as a normal D&D character, it would follow that most players are going to be less attached to them and more willing to engage in risky behavior. The second is that while a dungeoneer party may not be saving the world, they are engaging in incredibly dangerous work. Heroism of some level is almost required; it just may not look like the traditional kind.
A few weeks ago, you got the letter you've been dreading for years: Your student loan got bought out. You’ve enlisted as mercenary to avoid a life of forced labor in a corporate debtor’s prison. A training video later and you’re on the ground in a war zone with a memo listing you’re objectives and a gun with labels indicating which end to point at the enemy. Don’t worry though. Your employment contract requires your missions to have at least a 20% chance of survival.
===What's this all about?===
(General intro to the game/setting)

==Game play==
(links to rules pages)

I will be using Fudge for a McMercs game this weekend so here's a few notes for how I'll be doing things.

My wounding rules are prety standard with the mooching of the 'Clipped' result from FATE. 'Clipped' gives a +1 difficulty level to the next rounds actions. I prefer this to 'Scratched' without a game effect as if it doesn't do anything mechanics-wise, why have a mechanic for it? YMMV.

Wound Track:
1-2 Clipped [ ] [ ] [ ]
3-4 Wounded [ ]
5-6 Seriously Wounded [ ]
7-8 Incapacitated [ ]
9+ Near Death [ ]

Weapon Damages:

-1 Untrained Idiot Hand-to-Hand

0 Small Melee (Knife *in Sporting Goods*, Small Club, Telescoping Baton and Chop-Socky Hand-to-Hand)

+1 Medium Melee (Hatchet *in Sporting Goods*, Shortsword)

+2 Large Melee (Broadsword, Battle Axe, Katana) and Light Pistol (.22LR, .25ACP, .32 ACP. .380 ACP)

+3 Two-Handed Melee (Two-Handed Sword/Axe, Polearms, Katana Two-Handed) and Medium Pistols (9mm Para, .45 ACP, .40 Rem)

+4 Heavy Pistol (.357 Mag, .44 Mag, .454 Casull, .50 AE)

+5 Light Rifle (5.56 NATO, 5.45 x 39 Russian, 7.62 x 39 Russian)

+6 Medium Rifle (7.62 NATO, 7.62 x 54 Russian, .30-06)

+7 Heavy Rifle (.300 WinMag, 7mm Mag, other big game cartridges)

+8 Heavy Machinegun (.50 BMG, 12.7mm Russian)

Attributes:
No set attributes but they get 2 free 'Tell us the best things about yourself'. Are you able to lift 50lbs all day? You might be 'Strong +1' then. Be creative and try to steer from athletic and combat-related ones as there are no ex-cops or ex-soldiers allowed and you're freakin' SLACKERS, people.

Skills:
As the characters are slackers, I will give them 15 skill levels to be slackers with. They pick them and they can't be combat related unless they fit the society and background that the characters grew up in. I live in the US so having some firearm skills might be possible with the correct character background. If you're from the UK and Australia, you're hosed. Deal. If they were a college student then they select the correct skills for their coursework. Be creative and don't sweat the small stuff. A decent 'Video Games' skill is prefectly reasonable.

Gifts:
Each character gets one gift. I would suggest they relate to potential rerolls as they suck at combat and are, well, slackers. They need all the help they can get. Be creative and try to relate them to slacking. Stuff like "Makes great coffee" would allow them to reroll suck-up rolls with the Team Leads. "Video Game Gawd" for rerolling video game checks for bragging rights.

Faults:
Other than 'Broker n' Hell' and 'Financial Dumbass', pick the one thing you don't like about yourself that you put on your application. No, 'Psycho Rapist' and 'Schizophrenia' aren't good choices.

More later...
Mark(psycho)Phipps( HAHAHA! )
==McMercenaries: Who do you want to kill today?==
(descriptions of McMercenary companies)

'''Target Tactical''': ''Shoot more. Pay less.'' Target Tactical is the second largest McMerc company in the world, after Wal-Mercs (see below). While the Wal-Mercs tend to cost less for ops, TT are positioned as an 'upscale' discount mercenary corps. Their company flak jackets tend to jarringly conflict with the landscape a little less than Wal-Mercs', and they are more tolerant of customizations and variations from the norm. Don't let that fool you, though, they are just as ruthless and intolerant of screw-offs (which tend to be the wide majority of their employee base) as Wal-Mercs. Company flak jackets are rust-red, with a khaki-colored helmet covering. Target Tactical is famous for its policy of giving 5% of its profits to charity; however due to some poor choices, most of the beneficiaries of this policy are NGOPS (see below). You can always tell a rookie TarTac (as Target Tactical McMercs are called) or the one who pissed off the boss most recently.. they are heavily into branding, and one of their group has to wear the Company's logo (alternating rings of red and white, which has led the TarTacs to be called the BullsEye Boys.)

'''AKA''': TarTacs, Bulls-Eye Boys

'''Wal-Mercs''': One of the more ahem.. rigorous McMerc companies out there (and boy does that say a lot!) It's said that even higher management eats, sleeps and screws on a schedule (if they had enough toilets, they'd probably <bleep> on schedule too.) Pioneered the JNT (Just in Time) ammunition delivery system that scans every team, and is supposed to deliver their ammo just before they run out. (In practice, they haven't QUITE figured out that the average WalMerc shift is 7 hours, 59 minutes and 15 seconds of boredom, and 45 seconds of screaming terror with fingers clenching on the button marked "Full Auto"). Their standard uniform is a bright blue PsuevLar armor (giving them the nickname "Blueberries" among other McMercs), with a yellow happy smily face on the helmet.

'''AKA''': Blueberries

'''K-Batt''' They used to be one of the big names in McMerc companies when the concept exploded, but they've been reduced to a mere shadow of what they once were. They hired General Stewart Marthanan to try to give them a name brand kick, which failed miserably when Marthanan was splattered three months after hiring. K-Batt recently went through a much-needed merger with another McMerc group (Strategic Engagement And Recon Services) to stay in the McMerc game. K-Batt is the last straw.. some of their McMercs have been booted out of better McMerc groups, others that wouldn't qualify for a reputable McMerc group ever.. It's the bottom of the barrell, but they're surviving on a series of high risk/high reward missions, known as Blue Light Specials due to the fact that the K-Batt Ambulances use Blue Lights to signify themselves as non-combatants. They wear green/red camo.
'''AKA''': "Those Poor Bastards", Dinosaurs.

==NGOPS: Hippies... they're everywhere...==

'''NGOPS''' - private, non-profit combat charities, like ''Assassins Without Borders'', ''Meanpeace'' and ''Christian Children's Corps'' - are the bane of every McMercenary's life: Do-gooders on the battlefield, fighting for causes they believe in. They are better trained than you, better armed than you, and filled with the enthusiasm and zeal doing good works brings. And because many McMercenary companies have policies of giving some of their revenues to charity, most often they're partially funded by you.

What a bunch of bastards.

Worse, the NGOPS - nigh-universally the kids of rich parents who kept them out of student debt in college - all think that you're all a bunch of corporatist bastards who sold your souls for a paycheck and the latest in cyberware, while their org is running on a shoestring and a prayer and barely has enough money to keep its operatives in bullets. NGOPS are nigh-universally a way for militant post-college liberals to meet other militant post-college liberals, form short, tempestuous marriages and result in bitter children.

Yet, somehow, their Birkenshock Smart Armor is always shiny, and their Latte always steaming hot.

Utter bastards.

In the heads-up displays of McMercs, NGOPS tend to be labeled as "Civilian: Do Not Shoot" unless their designer autorifles are clearly visible to the sensors.

==Orientation: Welcome to your <strike>last</strike> new career!==

'''The future sucks. Especially for you.'''

The company wants updates on your progress but, for legal reasons, they’ll don’t want to how exactly what you’re doing all the time. So do what all disgruntled employees do. Goof off, steal stuff, and lie to your boss. Just try not get fired too soon. If you don’t pay the company for your training and weapons, they’re legally entitled to harvest your organs for resale.

Fight uppity natives and other mercenaries for Democracy(tm), Freedom(tm), or whatever.
Join the McMercenaries.

''Would you like explosions with that?''

===What's this all about?===
(General intro to the game/setting)

==Game play==

==McMercenaries: Who do you want to kill today?==
(descriptions of McMercenary companies)

Wal-Mercs: One of the more ahem.. rigorous McMerc companies out there (and boy does that say a lot!) It's said that even higher management eats, sleeps and screws on a schedule (if they had enough toilets, they'd probably <bleep> on schedule too.) Pioneered the JNT (Just in Time) ammunition delivery system that scans every team, and is supposed to deliver their ammo just before they run out. (In practice, they haven't QUITE figured out that the average WalMerc shift is 7 hours, 59 minutes and 15 seconds of boredom, and 45 seconds of screaming terror with fingers clenching on the button marked "Full Auto"). Their standard uniform is a blue PsuevLar armor, with a yellow happy smily face on the helmet.

==NGOPS: Hippies... they're everywhere...==

Yet, somehow, their Birkenshock Smart Armor is always shiny, and their Latte always steaming hot.

Utter bastards.

=How to Run Game X=

This is the place to put ''specific'' advice on how to run RPGs.

This project was inspired by the How to Run Game X thread on the RPG Open bboard, in which experienced GMs could pass along their expertise to new GMs. In hopes of continuing and expanding this, and incidentally hoping to increase the number of games played, which is always a good thing.

The games we currently have advice for (at this point, primarily the advice from the original thread) are listed in the [[:Category:How_to_Run]] page. If you feel you have something substantial to contribute to them, such as the pitfalls and successes you've had running the game, feel free to append your advice to the end of the appropriate game page; for minor tweaks and adds, please consider the Talk: page instead.

To add a ''new'' game, simply start a new page with the name “How_to_Run:New_game”, which includes the following:
<nowiki>[[Category:How_to_Run|Game_name]]</nowiki>
(the last part is to make sure the page is indexed properly on the Category page—otherwise everything would be under H.)

As for what to put in, think back to when you were first starting Gming, and imagine what you'd say to your younger self. (Besides “Try not to suck”)

==Game advice here==

For starters, we've already put up the advice from the original thread, which included [[How_to_Run:Exalted]]

[[How_to_Run:Feng Shui]]

[[How_to_Run:Amber]]

[[How_to_Run:Hunter]]

[[How_to_Run:Hong Kong Action Theatre]]

[[How_to_Run:Unknown Armies]]

[[How_to_Run:Paranoia XP]]

and (after being necro'd) [[How_to_Run:Iron Heroes]].
68.6.29.194https://wiki.rpg.net/index.php?title=Talk:The_AMERICAN_GODS&diff=11763Talk:The AMERICAN GODS2005-09-18T02:35:04Z
68.6.29.194: Damn my crappy spelling

'''''Dungeons & Dragons''''' (abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) published by Gary Gygax and David Arneson in January 1974. It was first published by Gygax's company, Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), and subsequently spawned the RPG industry. D&D is by far the best-known and best selling RPG, with an estimated 20 million players, many translations and over US$1 billion in book and equipment sales (as of 2004).

After TSR floundered in 1996, Wizards of the Coast acquired the company in 1997, including all rights to D&D. Two years later, Wizards was purchased by Hasbro. Owing partially to heavy marketing, products branded Dungeons & Dragons made up over fifty percent of the RPG products sold in 2002.

[[Category: Locations]][[Category: Resources]]

A list of locations that would be excellent for set-piece battles, fights, and conflicts of all kinds. No more 10' by 10' rooms.

==Locations==

* In the catwalks above a stage, with the opera/play in progress below.
* On a frozen river, with chunks of ice breaking away under your feet.
* A flotilla of logs floating down a river.
* Construction scaffolding.
* Under direct, heavy cannon bombardment.
* On top of a careening stagecoach, in a low-overhang forest.
* On top of a large hot-air balloon, in mid-flight.
* Top of a church tower where there's only a narrow walkway around the top. (Swinging off statues of angels and slamming people into bells.)
* Waist-deep in a stream
* On a thread-bare rope bridge spanning a chasm
* On a merry-go-round
* Inside the works of a clock tower
* Hanging onto the ropes that dangle beneath a zeppelin (which may or may not be on fire)
* In the Great Library of Alexandria as it's being burned
* In a wharf side warehouse, in a roped-off ring, surrounded by dozens of hard-nosed spectators screaming for blood
* In the midst of deadlocked rush-hour traffic, leaping from car to car.
* On a flat-bed semi traveling down the interstate at 90 mph
* In elevator shafts, but not in the elevators
* On a rocky precipice overlooking a fall of hundreds of feet
* On a series of conveyor belts leading to pressing machinery
* Inside the big cage where they store helium balloons
* On a rowboat
* Between the gears and pulleys of a four-story-building-sized clockwork, steam-driven difference engine
* On Mars, while wearing space suits, in low gravity
* Inside someone else's blood vessels, while shrunk to microscopic size
* In the back seat of a New York taxicab during rush hour
* In the middle of a big parade (maybe Mardi Gras, or perhaps the marching band at halftime at the Super Bowl?)
* On top of the servers in a major data center (while one of the combatants is trying to hack into the systems in that center)
* On a dam
* In a ship's rigging
* Below-decks in a burning, sinking ship
* The tunnels of a large subway system
* A meat locker, with entire sides of frozen cow hanging from hooks.
* In a cubicle farm (think Dilbert)
* In the food court of a large shopping mall, Sunday afternoon, one week before Christmas
* In a bamboo forest, about fifty feet up
* On top of a mist-shrouded hill, surrounded by the crumbling remnants of a stone circle
* In a sheep pen with about 100 sheep (substitute pigs as required)
* Anywhere at all during an earthquake
* Inside the chambers of a dying giant's heart .
* On the back of a flying whale. And every so often it spouts a geyser of steam from its blowhole.
* On the surface of a huge, faceted mirrored lens so there are thousands of distorted images of you and your opponent.
* On dragonfly mounts that buzz around one another...
* In a cage-free commercial chicken rearing factory.
* In a high voltage transformer station
* In a brick-walled olive oil cellar - when one of the casks is struck, olive oil coats the floor.
* In a hedgerow maze
* In an airlock that's slowly decompressing
* In a stopped elevator
* On a Ferris Wheel
* On a seaside boardwalk during a hurricane
* Running concurrently with another swordfight, such that each of the four combatants wants to kill the other three
* On a stone staircase in a rapidly falling apart castle.
* Underwater while wearing clumsy diver suits.
* On the floor of a large ballroom after the villain has insulted the hero – remember those floors are slick.
* On the edge of a burning, active volcano.
* In a smithy filled with blades
* In a house about to be blown to pieces by a tornado- with a shelter out back with room for one.
* On the roof of a burning sky scraper
* On the wing of a B-17 Flying Fortress
* In a dragon's lair...right next to sleeping dragon.
* In a studio prop department. (make sure to grab your REAL sword)
* In a gassed out mud filled body strewn WWI trench.
* On a super-highway
* Up a gigantic tree, with lots of hopping from branch to branch
* In a game & comic store
* On a factory conveyer belt that dumps rocks into a furnace.
* On a grassy plain in the middle of a stampede.
* From rooftop to rooftop in a flooded town.
* In the city's slums during a massive fire.
* An open field with snow 4 feet deep.
* In the middle of a riot.

The referee of a [[role-playing game]] is a [[player]] with a special job. Rather than playing a single [[character]], he plays all the [[non-player character]]s in the game as well as presenting the current scenario or [[adventure]] to the [[player]]s.

[[Category: Resources]]

A list of stereotypes and archetypes for use in games. Everyone gets stuck now and then, and this list might help you out of a pit.

==Stereotypes==

'''The Grumpy (Dwarven) Warrior''': Fantasy, obviously. Effectively used in LotR (Gimli) and R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels (Bruenor).

'''The Young Hero''': (...that becomes experienced) Not really tied to any setting, a staple of heroic stories. Star Wars (Anakin and Luke Skywalker), Wheel of Time (Rand and his friends), The Belgariad by Eddings (Garion) and many, many others.

'''The Likable (Halfling) Thief (with a heart of gold)''': Again, not really tied to any genre, although I'm most familiar with the fantasy version, hence the halfling. Again, Salvatore (Regis), but also Star Wars (Han Solo)

'''The Wize Old Man (often a wizard/mage) that guides the party''': LotR (Gandalf), Star Wars (Obi-wan), The Belgariad (Belgarath, who's also a likable thief). Merlin.

'''The Prodigal Son / The Hidden Heir To The Throne''': LotR (Aragorn). Anybody any more examples? Linked with "He Who Is Foretold In The Prophesies". King Arthur / "The Once and Future King."

'''He Who Is Foretold In The Prophesies''': The prophesy is an old favourite in fantasy literature, and is also easily used in RPGs. He Who Is Foretold often has additional powers that are crucial to the story. The Belgariad (Garion, and just about everybody he travels with), Star Wars ('He who will bring balance to the Force').

'''The Prophet''': Hey, somebody has to make the prophesy Related with The Wize Old Man, although that one is often more active.

'''The Silent Stranger''': Not to be confused with a certain Werewolf tribe Western. Clint Eastwood. Need I say more?

'''The Stuck-Up Paladin''': Fantasy, again. Paladins can be so 'holier-than-thou' and condescending, they're a real pain in the ass.

'''The (Elvish) Archer''': Fantasy. LotR (Legolas), Salvatore (Catti-brie). Linked with The Ranger.

'''The Street Samurai''': Cyberpunk. Modernized version of the Oriental samurai, although more pragmatic. William Gibson's Neuromancer introduced this concept in the person of Molly.

'''Grizzled Detective''': he's seen it, done it. He's got his problems. He's jaded, cynical but still does the right thing against his own better judgement. Chandler's Philip Marlowe is your old standby. John McLean in Die Hard. Garibaldi in B5.

'''Maverick Cop/Special Ops/Starship Captain who doesn't play by the Rules but gets the Job done''': Who needs skill or experience when you can rely on a chiselled jaw, neccessary plot development and sheer dumb luck? Captain Kirk is an example, bu there's plenty of special FX laden

'''The Spitfire Tomboy Who's Nonetheless Cute As A Button''': Quite often, turns out to be the Hero's True Love Who Gets Overlooked For Half The Series In Favor Of Someone More Exotic.

'''The Boisterous Barbarian''': Likes ale, wenching, and bashing in heads, not necessarily in that order. Almost invariably burly and bearded, unless female--in which case 'wenching' should be replaced either with 'manning' or simply with the understanding that the Amazon is so intimidating that men are too scared to approach her.

'''The Absent-Minded Savant''': This is the character who's the world's foremost authority in his field, but woefully unequipped for life in the real world: the physicist who can model Heisenberg uncertainty experiments in his head, but can't remember to wear matching socks, or the befuddled old mage who remembers his spells at the WORST possible time.

'''Mr Johnson''': aka the mysterious stranger at the table next to you. He wants you to do a job/go on a quest. Help me, random thugs in a bar, you're my only hope!

'''The Independent Woman''': She’s tough as a man and intent on proving it at all times. Often loses her independence by falling for the male hero after proving she's just as good as him. example - Red Sonja

'''The Redeemed Hero''': He was a bad guy but is trying to return to the light.

'''The Mercenary''': He doesn't care if he fights in the side of good or evil. He is neither particularly clever or strong but he is tough, gets the job done and wants payment. Then off to another place. Clint Eastwood in westerns or some of his opponents there are good icon characters.
The Jive-Talking Wizard: A more annoying cousin of the Old Man, this character constantly makes obscure references, veiled warnings, and obscure prophecies, but whenever someone asks them to talk straight, they reply that the time is not yet right, the questioner is not yet ready for such knowledge, ad nauseum.

'''The Bored Aristocrat''': May have turned to more decadent pursuits, such as meddling with the Dark Arts or hosting tournaments of super-powered martial artists, or may experience a desire for altruism that will lead him to sponsor and aid the heroes.

'''The Lost Love''': They're out there....someday, though circumstances have seperated them and the protagonist, and one day they'll be reunited. The Lost Love usually gets killed a few minutes after such an event.

'''The Roommate''': Usually of a ditzy New York woman. She's sassy, cynical, worldly wise and doesn't think much of men.

'''The Police Chief:''' Or any superior officer whose job is to get outraged at the rules-breaking antics of the cocky hero.

'''The Believer''': Believes everything, even the most far-fetched and unlikely theories. Put on the map by David Duchovny's Fox Mulder.

'''The Conspiracy Theorist''': "The NSA & CIA work together to cover up the fact that they have alien technology." "AIDS was created by the Russians." Totally obsessed and often a danger to the people around him. Often a Believer, but more out-of-it and dangerous. "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you."

'''Star-crossed Lovers''': The girl and boy who can't get each-other because of their environment. From Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Can easily be put in just about any setting. Also see The Lost Love.

'''The Trusty Companion''': The hero's sidekick, this character has no obvious powers or skills. His redeeming quality, however, is his absolute loyalty. Stays with the hero through it all, even if the hero treats him poorly. He can also serve as a moral anchor for the protagonist. LotR (Samwise), Buffy: the Vampire Slayer (Xander).

'''The Scoundrel''': Related to the Likable Thief and the Brash Pilot. Ruggedly handsome, charming but also a bit egoistic and arrogant. Can't be bother by rules or laws. Very pragmatic and often materialistic. His smarts often save him from the mess he gets himself in. Harrison Ford is often The Scoundrel, as he played both Indiana Jones and Han Solo.

'''The Gentleman Spy''': Suave, certain of himself, this man keeps his suit straight even after escaping from an exploding plane in a helicopter. Ladykiller with a quick and ironic wit. Often a bit cruel. James Bond of course.

'''The (Eccentric) Mentor''': A bit of a hermit, this Wize Old Man takes the role of mentor once again. He's more personal than the Wize Old Man, who guides the whole party, not just the Hero. Has some peculiar habits and while tutoring, drives the Young Hero to the brink. Is reluctant to show his powers and doesn't use them often, but shows his quite amazing mastery if he must. Yoda in Star Wars, Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid.

'''The Alien Companion''': (S)he comes from another time/dimension/planet. Ready to guide other people through strange places because maybe (s)he wants to go home, keep on visiting the multiverse, or some secret divine task. Examples : Jhary-A-Conel (Corum), Pie'oh'Pah (Imajica)

'''The Broodin' Swordsman''': Dark, Mysterious, often melancholy he usually wears a black cloak (or trenchcoat, if modern) and always carries a sword. Haunted by his own personal demons or a past he cannot forget he sits quietly and (you guessed it) broods, until combat ensues and he turns into a quisenart of destruction. eg. Elric, Drizzt Do'Urden and any Vampire:tM character who carries a katana.

'''The Amazon''': This female character, usually a warrior but sometimes a wizard, MUST do everything better than her male rival. Usually these are both PCs and often they are dating. eg Annie Oakley.

'''The Joker/Jester''': He/she is always making jokes, even in teh face of certain death. Can be either useless or competent, and is usually likable. In horror genre is teh first to get killed. Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet, Chandler in Friends .

'''The Vet''': This guy was in the Big One, and compared to the Big One, everything is the Little One, and he's always telling you how much harder he had it. Older, salty, and prone to flashbacks in the middle of a firefight. ex Louis Fedders.

'''The Mechanic''': This guy is the ultimate in his field, but no one knows it but people in the know. If it's broke he can fix it. If it ain't broke, he can make it better. He is also the Cliff Clavin of his field... he knows all sorts of little details about the Eludium-235 Detonator, and he doesn't mind sharing... all day. He is the first one to squeal when interrogated. He's also an ex-megacorporate employee... and sometimes they come knocking.

'''Sacrifical Virgin''': Steorotypical beautiful innocent female, except she is always hunted after because well, she's so damn pretty and pure that she would make a swell addition to one's villianous flesh cookie batter. Often saved by some heroic dullard on a horse with a pointy stick.

'''Horse''': Loyal and faithful steed that often has more bloody sense than its rider.

'''The Straight Talkin' Lawman''': Think Gary Cooper in High Noon. Duty to be done no matter what.

'''The Traveller in a Strange Land''': A mainstay (and usually a necessity) of any story where the setting is more important than everthing else. He's there as contrast to show us just how weird the place he's journeying through is. He may or may not be the (prophesized) saviour of the land he finds so strange. Examples: Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels), Valentine Michael Smith (Stranger in a Strange Land), Thomas Covenant (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever)

'''The Girl Who Becomes a Boy''': She becomes sailor, bard or warrior.

'''The Friend of All People''': He or she is the urchin who knows all the streets and everyone in them.

'''The Innocent Farmboy''': Doesn't have to be from a farm per se, but is naive, innocent, honest, and gets by on pure luck, innate ability. Usually has at least one guardian angel. Examples would be Luke Skywalker, Arthur and the protagonist in All Quiet On the Western Front. D'Artagnan as well.

'''The Hustler''': This is a soft, decadent type, with or without a heart of gold, that likes setting up deals, likes seeing deals work out, and likes taking his percentage. Crapgame in Kelly's Heroes is a perfect example.

'''The Texan''': Doesn't really have to be from Texas, but this character represents the guy who comes from the backwoods, the highlands, the bayou, the asteroid belt, or whichever locale in the campaign world is considered 'backwards.' The Texan speaks with some bizarre accent, has totally different ways of doing things than everyone else, but is generally highly competent. War stories are filled with Texans, whether they are from Texas, Quebec, Australia or Scotland.

===Military===

'''The Loudmouth Sergeant Who Loves his Men''': Loud, gruff, tough and grizzled, this archetype takes in much of the Grizzled Veteran, only the Sergeant also operates as a mother hen for his men. He is a decent fighter, but his strength lies in his ability to get his men, who are each better at a specific aspect of soldiering than he is, to do their job and not shirk from doing it well. Think Big Joe from Kelly's Heroes.

'''The New Recruit''': Young, naive and overly enthusiastic. Get their dreams of fame and glory shattered, if not by the Drill Sergeant, than often on the field of battle. Some survive to become more experienced characters and thus can become a Drill Sergeant or Grizzled Veteran. Most of the characters in Tour Of Duty and Band of Brothers.

'''The Brash Pilot''': The guys in the jets and choppers -- brash, cocky and arrogant. Often look down upon the ground hogs. Exemplified by Maverick (Tom Cruise's Character in Top Gun), Lt. McKay (the heli pilot in Tour Of Duty). Wedge Antilles in Star Wars can also be seen as a Brash Pilot

'''The Officer Fresh From The Academy''': Has all the training but none of the experience. Can be a real threat to his unit if he stubbornly leads them, believing his theoretical knowledge and the rules to be superior to his lower-ranking's advice. Maj. Frank Burns in M*A*S*H.

'''The Sergeant''': A variation on the Drill Sergeant, this guy saves the lives of his soldiers time and again. Knows that practical knowledge beats the Rules and the Academy every time. Stern but fair. Adored by the men, hated by the Officer Fresh From The Academy. Sgt. Zeke Anderson in Tour Of Duty.

===Highschool===

'''The Popular Girl''': by money or own accomplishments, this girl has it all. Or does she? Her arrogance and bitchiness may cause her friends to abandon her if they see her true self. Or the girl is 'redeemed' by a movie-shaking turn of events. Often captain of the cheerleading squad. Buffy: the Vampire Slayer (Cordelia), Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in Cruel Intentions.

'''The Nerd''': Member of the chess team, high grades in mathematics, plays games and reads comics. Complete lack of social skills. Of course, can also be 'redeemed', and those computer skills sure can come in handy. Mostly harmless, until stroked the wrong way. Buffy: the Vampire Slayer (Willow), Revenge of the Nerds. Also see: The Mad Scientist.

'''The Quarterback''': Handsome, athletic but often also a bit lacking in mental and social skills. Can be a bully to the Nerd, and is often the Popular Girl's love interest. (And vice-versa). Has a squad of henchmen, who are always a bit more stupid and depend on the coolness of the leader.

'''The Skater''': Slightly alternative, ruggedly handsome and mysterious. The guy doesn't care about looks and coolness and is thus not part of the Popular Gang. But he is rather interesting...

'''The Film-fan''': Knows every film and can spew forth relevant quotes in every situation.

'''The Psycho-analyst''': Too busy analysing himself, his friends and their relations to actually live life. Dawson from Dawson's Creek.

'''The Vixen''': Often bubble headed, sometimes dangerous, always sexy.

===Villains===

'''The Urbane Villain''': Suave, charming, the guy you can't quite bring yourself to hate. Usually working toward an admirable goal, but using questionable methods. Often either a friend of the protagonists, or someone the protagonists will have to team up with. Occasionally, just a bad guy you want to root for. Ex: Ozymandias from the Watchmen, quite a few from Edding's Belgariad series.

'''The Mad Scientist''': Tinkering with science, occultism or something else, this guy is detached and out-of-it. His creations are foremost, even to the exclusion of himself. Dr Frankenstein from the novel by Shelley, or Emmet Brown in Back To The Future. Has it's share of examples in Lovecraftian fiction, as well.

'''The Gentleman Villain''': Suave, certain of himself and powerful. High breeding mixed with unbound ambition to Rule The World. The villains in the James Bond movies.

'''The Knight in Black Armor''': Avatars of Evil dressed in black, come to destroy the hero, they usually are a mirror image of the same. Example: Darth Vader (Star Wars).

'''The Otherwordly Seductress''': Like the rat-demoiselle who seduces the mouser, her wrongness is part of her charm.
68.6.29.194https://wiki.rpg.net/index.php?title=Game_Moderator_Titles&diff=589Game Moderator Titles2005-05-09T03:18:12Z
68.6.29.194:
