There he discovers that many of his former advisors were infiltrators from the Hendrake clan. He eventually leaves the realm in the possesion of his "brother" with the stipulation that Rubio's county of Valentin is not to be changed or given away until his return.

Calypso goes to fetch Cyrus for Llewella’s sleepover for the boy(s). Gwenyth goes home.

Evelyn is dreaming she’s in a field. Someone pinches her. She is told to report to the processing station. She tries to go back to sleep but can’t. Her mother appears at the door, and tells her to get to the processing center. She goes down the hall way. It is corrugated metal, then marble, then there’s mirrors all along the hallway. She sees various scenes from her Amber dream. She sees the ocean in one. It changes to look like Calypso’s mother’s face. She tells Evelyn to step through. Evelyn does as a skeleton with a flaming head from Chaos attacks her from another mirror. Llewella walks past and gives her a double take. She asks Evelyn to stay over, as in the morning she wants to ask all of the “kids” for a small favor. Evelyn agrees.

In Gilead, things are becoming more the way Gwenyth wants. The reflecting pool starts talking to her. It sounds like Llewella. Her face is reflected in the pool, and she invites Gwenyth for a sleepover. She wants some help with her neighbors. She needs a family member who’s not known as a family member to talk to the Queen of the other realm. Gwenyth agrees to join the rest for breakfast tomorrow.

Calypso and Cyrus run into Evelyn, who explains about Llewella appearing in a mirror from Texorami and the skeleton with a flaming head. LaRubio appears. Llewella suggests s’mores and ghost stories.

They then go to the quicksilver pool to contact Merlin. Evelyn starts telling her ghost story about Oberon and Celina. A head comes up out of the pool. It is Rinaldo, who accuses Evelyn of killing him. It is actually a joke. Evelyn did not kill the real Rinaldo, but a double. Llewella stares at the pool and starts changing Merlin’s name. Evelyn tells him about the skeleton. Merlin asks LaRubio for a truce, thanks him for the warning, and the pool goes flat again. LaRubio tries to explain, saying that some think he should be on Merlin’s throne. These people are creating armies, according to Clark. LaRubio is also apparently a member of the royal family of Chaos. Llewella suggests s’mores and more ghost stories. In the morning, Gwenyth will join them, and she would like the group to go take care of the ghost of the Queen Under the Sea who is causing havoc in the Aquamarine Circle. Evelyn doesn’t want to go with a second belly button. Llewella stirs the pool again and an industrial hallway appears in it. Llewella gives Evelyn a plastic card. Evelyn is to step through and present the card when the second belly button is gone. They put a mask on her face, and she goes to sleep.

She wakes up back in her room in Amber. Bleys’s ring in on the dresser. She puts it on. She pricks herself on a projection on the ring, but the ring burns the blood off. She opens the hallway door, but finds herself in a lab. Fiona is there in a lab coat. Evelyn asks for s’mores. Fi says they are very expensive, but she could swap the ring for some. Evelyn refuses. She pours some liquid out of a beaker and it forms a s’more.

Suddenly she’s sitting up in a room with a machine that goes “ping”. She still has the ring. She tells him she’s Llewella and they ask about her uncle. She says he’s in the infirmary, and he’s a doctor. They discuss her experiences with Gerard and how he asked her to lift her skirts. They offer to get a rape crisis counselor to talk with her. They leave the room to talk, and she calls for Llewella. Llewella appears on the TV and tells Evelyn to come.

Everyone goes to bed, except Evelyn who follows a fish. She then sees an octopus, which wraps its tentacles around her. It swims toward the surface, taking her with it. It starts changing shape and becomes Bleys. He is wearing nothing but a smile and a leer. He asks for his ring back. There is an unpleasant discussion, and ‘Evelyn finally gives the ring back. She tells him that, if the dream path gives it to her again, she’ll keep it.

She then sees her ghost father, who says that he wants to give her Kashfa as a dowry. She says she’s not ready for genetic pairing, and he says he’ll be the judge of that. Clouds pass over, and things go dark. She’s now in a very large bed with Random and Vialle. They aren’t aware she’s there. She goes down the stairs and heads back to Rebma.

Evelyn borrows Llewella’s trump of Random and asks to borrow see-through grandpa’s sword. She tells him of the ghost queen. Random warns about using psychoactive drugs after walking the Pattern.

The group then discusses the situation with Moire. She believes that Selena (the ghost queen) was not killed by Oberon, but that he just spread that story. He then built up Rebma as a barrier. They then discuss weapons to use.

With breath water spells activated and riding on dragon-LaRubio, they approach a city walled in by a coral wall ring. The inhabitants bring out trays of riches and lay at the group’s feet. The group refuses them, but the guide wants to take the tribute back to Rebma. He looks in the bag and sees rocks. He leaves the bag behind.

They follow the directions to the city, where the people look very human. They ask to see the Queen and the guards refuse. The guards attack LaRubio, who strikes back, and the group enters the city. They arrive in a throne room/clinic where an ancient woman is resting. She is defiant, saying that Rebma continues to take over her lands. Gwenyth tries to talk her into negotiating, but she raises a conch shell to call for help. Calypso goes for the shell and turns into a fish. Gwenyth freezes the Queen’s hand, and continues to talk with her. Calypso trumps Llewella who comes through with a bow and shoots the Queen. Calypso and Cyrus join in and the Queen is killed. Llewella says Calypso should be the new Queen here, but they debate over the tribute being collected from the people. Gwenyth leaves. Calypso sends word that each village should send a representative to meet with her.

LaRubio takes Evelyn and Cyrus to see a volcano. Gwenyth has a note from Caine, saying he wants to see her. She replies that she will see him in the morning at breakfast. Calypso starts making her marketing plans. She talks with Llewella and returns to Rebma.

Evelyn finds some obsidian at the volcano. She takes two pieces, as does LaRubio. They return to Amber. Calypso also goes to Amber.
