It was built in 1949 by the immortal supervillain Professor Faust. An undersea volcano, a mid-Pacific island said to be much like those of Hawaii, it was turned into an almost impenetrable fortress, only its smoking top lying above the surface (due to the Professor's insane ego). After two years of siege, the USSR took the fortress and gave it to he UN under one condition: Faust, who remained sequestered at the deepest bunker, never be freed. And thus the worlds super prison was born!

It sucked big donkey balls. It was woefully mismanaged, allowing up to a dozen escapes per year (1988) and being co-opted from within by the criminals themselves. In 1999 it was taken over completely, becoming a literal hive of scum and villainy. (That's what they called it, The Hive, after its labyrinthine design.)

Then, in 2005, there came the escape that wasn't. And now things are different.

As it is now instead of an active volcano crater the place is capped by an enormous black metal vault door.
