Dan started out his career working for a corporation, which helped pay for his education and training. The corporation needed loyal workers who could get things done...things that weren't traceable back to the corp. Dan thought the corp was looking to do the right thing, or so he'd been trained. And if that required doing some bad things to accomplish a greater good, than that was a reasonable trade. Eventually, he found too much evidence that suggested that wasn't the case, and when a particularly nasty piece of work coming along, things ended with an explosion and what looked like a death on a rainy night, and then Dan started over a new life as an undercover officer, trying to actually make things better.
