The fog lifted from the woman’s mind as she awoke or maybe came to would be a better option. Where am I? The first question didn’t seem like an easy one to answer. Looking around, her eyes met the street and buildings in the darkened alleyway. Here felt unfamiliar but so did she.

The woman rose and brushed herself off. Her mind struggled to remember, anything. Who I am? How did I get here? Why is my dress torn? Nothing came to mind. She wanted to cry but something inside of her told her not to, that it would be somehow inappropriate. None of this made any sense.

Her mind finally caught up with her surroundings. There was a lot of noise coming from one of the nearby buildings. Whether or not, a proper lady, if she was one, should enter that establishment, seemed to be the least of her concerns at the moment. As she made her way to towards the sounds of laughter, talking and what sounded the general appeasement of men, a name came to her. Flora… Flora Spencer. Was it her name? The woman didn’t know but she would use it just the same.

As Flora entered the building, she realized that she must look completely un-lady like. Not that there was anything she could do to change this. A man came up to her and looked her over.

“Miss, you seem….confused. Perhaps, I can help you?” He did seem genuinely concerned for her welfare.

His voice had a definite British accent. Perhaps she was in London?

“May I inquire of your name?” She responded

“Bertram Worchester Maxfield-Fleming. At your service.” He said with a slight flourish. “And yours? If you do not mind.”

“I… Flora… Flora Spencer.” The name spilled from her mouth, almost easily.

“It is a pleasure to meet you. Miss Spencer. Excuse me. Is it Miss or Mrs?”

“I…I think it’s Miss.” She really did not know. “I am sorry. You see I have lost my memory. I truly do not recall.”

“You have no memory.”

“None, Flora Spencer was the first name that came to me.”

“Well, Miss Spencer. Why don’t I take you home with me?” Bertram asked. “I will make sure you are taking care of.

It felt a little odd but not uncomfortable, a little unfamiliar, then again everything was unfamiliar. He offered his arm, which she accepted and the two went off to Bertram’s place, well, that is what she assumed.
