Nonetheless he rose up through the ranks to Commander of the Western Marches Women's Cavalry Brigade--commanding while riding side-saddle as all Real Men do, of course. Finally he received an invitation to attend a diplomatic soiree at the Imperial Palace. This was actually part of a negotiation that the Empire was having with an envoy from the Maemeck Matriarchy. Rumor had it that the Empress and her top military advisors were going to cede some border territory to Maemeck for a truce. This angered a lot of lower-ranking military officers who felt the Empire was being sold out by decadent Centrine aristocrats. But of course no one could say such things in public if he valued his career.

Gram, being less sophisticated than his peers, had fewer qualms about voicing his opinion. And after having too much to drink at the envoy's reception and listening to arrogant braggadocio by some Lord and Supreme Commander, Gram shouted at the aristocrat, "Why don't you solve this war by just having a duel with a Matriarch's champion? Of course in your case, you'd need twenty of your Centrine fops to be equal to some Maemeck maiden, and being an aristocrat you'd probably want to do it on horseback." Basically he called the lord a wussy eunuch.
