Joan was a peasant girl, living on the edge of a small English manor village. Her family was extremely poor and had next to no land; her father was forced to engage in very dangerous poaching to supply them with food.

As she grew, Joan attracted, and grew used to, the dislike and distaste that she seemed to inspire in nearly anyone she met; and, because of this she spent much of her time foraging for plants in the forest near her home.

Her life changed drastically when, one day, she met a leper. To see someone as maligned and outcast as her moved to her to pity, put her hand on him despite his leprosy. To her surprise, he was miraculously cured of his ailment.

Despite how disliked she was, this drew some attention, and, eventually, the maga who would become her parens- Avice ExMiscellanae.

Her apprenticeship was amazing at first, since she was afforded genuine human affection for the first time in many years. She turned her love of plants into an amazing talent; learned some modicum of the healing ways her parens wished her to to take up. Alas, it was short-lived.

Joan continued to run into problems, as her attempts to heal the sick and wounded were faltered by their intense distrust and hatred of her. No one wished to be treated by her unless they were truly desperate.

Eventually, after her gauntlet, Joan left England to escape her own perceived failure; joined a new covenant, in hopes that she could seclude herself into researching new types of plants. She hopes to invent and standardize spells to improve the quality of life of countless people by permitting crops to be grown in excess of their natural seasons.

Of course, as someone who lived for so long with so little, the notion of being incredibly wealthy also appeals to Joan; the knowledge that many a noble would pay handsomely for apples in midwinter is not unknown to her.
