I've been a fan of the novels for quite some time, but I got kind of burned out on them with so many being made (I read the first book of the War of Souls trilogy, but never finished it).I seem to think that Dragonlance works best as a literary setting; if you are playing in the War of the Lance you are kind of forced to follow the novels, if you are playing as secondary characters you are essentially the clean up crew' for the real' heroes (kind of how 2nd Edition Dark Sun ended up). Of course a good GM could just ignore the books and let the characters do as they please, but that would take a lot of work on his part.
