A second generation Polish immigrant. Her family left after the last time the European powers decided use their country as a battlefield and her father found a job at the local steel mill. Her mother came from a long line of smiths, and her father had been a former lancer in the Winged Hussars before the advent of the machine gun had killed most of his comrades dead. Being built like brick-wall ran in the family, which made their men fierce and their women remarkably hardy. Which was fortunate when her father was drafted into the army, she and her seven sisters were more than able to take care of their own.

The Eldest three, Sarah included, sought out working in the rapidly expanding factories of the Detroit industrial complex. Having to work twice as hard for her pay and the slightest amount of respect wasn't something that bothered her, though the catty comments of some of secretarial pool about her probable gender were hurtful. It was fortunate she had her mother's forbearance rather than her father's temper. They probably would dock her salary if she broke a few of those fish wives over her knee. The chemical plant she was working at though was one that did a number of special projects for the Government on the sly. That unfortunately led to their workers not knowing what the proper safety precautions were.

Sarah had been rather smitten by one of the few men on her shift, a man named Paul who had missed his own draft due to flat feet. There had been a few tentative dates when there was an accident with a several vats of material. Paul pushed her out of the way, so she was only partly covered. He dissolved before her eyes, and as she started to do the same, she felt something starting to heal her wounds. As several of her coworkers watched legs that had been burned to the bone by accident regenerate to full, her abilities weren't much of a secret. When the man from the government came promising a better salary and a chance to use her new abilities to fight her nation's enemies, she was all for it.

Little did she know she'd spend the first few months moving through hospitals wearing a nurses scrubs. She wanted to get their and prove herself. And she had the nagging doubt that the well into which she drew those injuries she absorbed was not without bottom and having her cup runneth over would be bad.
