* The woman who would become the Mordant Herald of Flails was born Cynis Belar Chika, the fifth child of two relatively minor patrician members of House Cynis. Raised in the lap of luxury, the young Mordant was constantly schooled in diplomacy, musicianship, singing, dancing, lore, and the arts of fencing. At 19, her parents were sent to An-Teng as companions for the Realm Ambassadors, ordered to take their family with them.
* While at a party there, Mordant was kidnapped by agents of the First and Forgotten Lion seeking hostages from members of Dynast families. Unfortunately for her, Falafel decided not to ransom her back to her family, but Abyssalise her instead. When Mordant rose from her Monstrance and took possession of her new whip, however, she promptly fled the Deathlord's fortress in search of some way to cleanse herself of her new Abyssal nature, or at the very least cleanse the Exaltation.
* During her search for a way to cleanse her Exaltation, Mordant met back up with her cousin Cynis Baihe Mettalyka, a former lover of hers, and a musician fleeing an unwanted arranged marriage. Mettalyka was easily convinced to travel with Mordant as a servant (with judicious application of mental influence).
*While traveling to Wavecrest to search the libraries there, the duo met Mordant's Lunar mate, Amaiyuri Nohana, when the dolphin-totem aided them in a battle against pirates.
