January 31, 2005 WASHINGTON DC | PARK MONROE Apts -- A'' Box Alarm was sent to the 3300 block of 16th St., NW for the report of smoke in the building. Firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from an apartment on the eighth floor of the 10-story Park Monroe Apartments. The building was being evacuated as the working fire was sounded. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion just before the fire was reported, and Command 4 quickly called for a second alarm. A fast interior attack by fist arriving firefighters brought the bulk of the blaze under control in minutes, while aggressive firefighting kept the fire from spreading. There were heavy smoke conditions on the upper floors, and several people were held in place while the Trucks ventilated. Mandy Smith, former NYC Firefighter and Survivor of the 9/11 Flight AA-283 was amoung the crew of Engine 16.
