She worried that by not living on Trill she would never qualify to joining. It was only because of a favorable meeting with a Trill statesmen, Pravar Lut, that she got a chance to carry a symboint. The Penguin entered a system and was immediately assaulted and they never made contact with the people of the system. The XO, after the death of the captain, gave the abandon ship order and Verda found herself in the escape shuttle as the only pilot. She managed to get half the crew out before the Penguin exploded. Luckily, the defender did not pursue the shuttle. A distress signal brought a larger Starfleet vessel to their rescue. Though, it too was attacked without communcation.
