New page

In reality, mini mam uses classes and levels to substitute for more complicated things in Mano a Mano. In some ways it is like typical fantasy RPG systems out there, so it is more like half typical RPG and half Mano-a-Mano as far as it's influences are concerned. However, it is an extremely abbreviated system. The scope of this system is to be easily memorized, even for children. Experienced players should feel no need at all to use a character sheet.

There is a cynical element to the design of this system that sort of mocks 90% of the RPGs out there, which tend to be Fantasy oriented, and rely heavily on class and level conventions. It serves partly as an illustration of why the creators of Mano a Mano created Mano a Mano in the first place. It originated as part of a discussion about what should go on the Mano a Mano 2008 character sheet in e-mails between Benjamin Galbraith and Seth Galbraith. (Specifically, it was an example on an answer to the theoretical question "what would Mano a Mano be like without any character sheet at all - would we have to resort to using classes and levels?")

However, we thought this resulting system was actually very handy, and useful for other projects. It's useful indeed for when you are at a party where someone says to you "hey, don't you play role playing games? Let's play an RPG right now, can I be the Wizard?" Narratively their experience should be about the same for a first time player as it would be with most other fantasy RPGs.
