== Doji Sarutomo ==

Clan Champion of the Crane Clan, Sarutomo is a handsome bachelor of 32. He has been married twice before, but on both occasions, his wife has died in childbirth (in both cases, the children did not survive either). He fancies himself as the epitome of bushido, but even the Kakita acknowledge in private that he is more of a fop. His father died when Sarutomo was a young boy, and his mother, O-Doji Koneko, acted as regent for him until he was old enough to take over. It is whispered that Sarutomo is genial but rather lacking in intellect.

== O-Doji Koneko ==

The matron of the Crane Clan, Koneko was widowed early and acted as regent until her son, Doji Sarutomo, came of age and became the daimyo of the Doji. Despite her age and growing infirmity, her mind is still sharp, and she is widely recognized as the power behind the Crane throne as well as a consummate courtier.

== Kakita Saburashi ==

The Sensei of the Kakita Dueling Academy, and daimyo of the Kakita, Saburashi is an unmarried man of 41. he refuses to retire until he achieves perfection with the sword (and he is often said to be married to his daisho). He is notorious for winning the Emerald Tournament but refusing to accept the post because he did not feel his skill was adequate.

== Kakita Tai ==

The Sensei of the Kakita Artisan Academy, Tai was supposedly chosen by O-Doji Koneko because of his mastery of ikebana and rhetoric. At 40, he is now considering retirement.
