== Background ==

Once upon a time, there was a woman who had a stepdaughter and a daughter of her own, and who hated her stepdaughter. One day, she orders her husband to take her stepdaughter out into the winter fields and leave her there, and he obeys. It is told that Father Frost finds her there, and because the girl is polite and kind to him, he gives her a chest full of beautiful things and garments to bring back home. What really happened is more grim - by the time the primal spirit of winter arrived, the girl had already died of exposure. Father Frost pitied her fate, so he took her soul back to his realm and made a little ice sculpture to house it. Thus was Kalinka Marova born. This was a long time ago - she does not remember her previous life.

The life Kalinka knows is one of eternal childhood, much like that of other pixies. Recently, she grew tired of her icy home and decided to strike out on her own, looking for adventure. She sneaked past the Iron Curtain separating Russia's Feywild from the mortal world, and was visiting an old acquaintance of her adoptive father's when the opportunity for a real, live, bona-fide adventure came by. Kalinka has heard and read stories of exciting adventure her whole life, and her biggest dream has always been to star in one.
