== Background ==

Yelena Kazakovna can trace her family's history long back before the formation of the Alliance. Most of that history is less-than-savory; Yelena's Great Uncle was a notorious mobster in Eastern Europe. Rather than follow down that path, Yelena's parents took her and emigrated to the west when she was very young. She grew up poor, the daughter of an honest butcher. After high school she enrolled in the Alliance Navy reserves as a chance to get an education and a guaranteed job after school. Yelena excelled at sciences, so she naturally gravitated medicine. Rather than continue in a reserve capacity she decided to stay on with the Alliance capacity full time.

As an Alliance Naval Corpsman, Yelena spent a good deal of time patching up wounded marines during the Skyllian Blitz, and also spent some time in combat, so she harbors a distinct grudge against Batarians. Her front-line combat experience as well as her skills as a combat medic got her noticed and her commanding officers recommended her for Interplanetary Combatives Training. Yelena hopes that her time at the N-school, coupled with the councils new found trust in humans (They even made Shepard a Spectre!) will let her represent humanity well.
