Background: Aelrindel, a promising high elf arcanist, was born into one of the noble houses of Calanis in Shahalesti. Due to the naivete of youth and a bit of willful ignorance, he had been fiercely nationalistic and overly prideful of being a Shahalesti for most of his life. It wasn't until after he had enlisted in the Solei Palancis and was given a mission that took him to Gate Pass that his immature views started to change. While on assignment there, he began hearing the disembodied cries of the Taranesti who were killed when the forest of Innenotdar just south of Gate Pass was set ablaze. It was a pivotal experience that shattered the shallow foundations of his original beliefs and sent his mind and heart reeling.

Sensing that Aelrindel's inner conflict may lead to an opportunity to get him to defect, the archmage, Gabal, approached him with an offer to join the Resistance. The young war wizard accepted the offer on behalf of the slain Taranesti whom he now feels honor-bound to avenge. Though he wasn't even born yet during the genocide of the wood elves, he is burdened by a measure of guilt for his previous ignorance and apathy, and seeks redemption for his shortcomings.
