Background[edit]

Chris was a typically cool, self-assured young hipster of Sydney, Australia, making it his philosophy to never try too hard and never become emotionally involved in anything. He had reached the age of twenty nine without ever really working at anything –until came the day when it all crashed down around his ears. In the space of a single day all the money in his bank account mysteriously disappeared, as did all record of his identity. Neither his parents nor his girlfriend recognised him nor did his employers and coworkers at the record label where he worked, and the locks had been changed on his apartment. By midnight, he found himself shivering on the streets, relying on the charity of strangers for his very survival. It was then that he had his Awakening: in realising that the perfectly isolated and stable life he had lived before was no way to exist, and that if he didn’t change things he did not have long to live. It was not long after that he was approached by the Guardians of the Veil, who had engineered many (though not all) of his terrible day’s events.

He has moved to Wellington to try for a new start, this time embedding himself deeply in the life of the city and trying to do all he can to guide the city through the times ahead that he has foreseen. The irony is, however, that despite his deep and intense involvement in Wellington’s fate, he remains almost as distant and cut-off from others as he was before –his manipulation of chance and destiny only ever bring others together, leaving Chris as an outside observer. Whether he will realise this in time to change it, or whether his nature and his ultimate doom are both unchangeable, are things that not even Christopher can foresee.

Christopher McCann is one of those enigmatic individuals whom everyone seems to know. He is a post-graduate researcher at one of Wellington's universities, and also holds part-time jobs as a contributor to the local paper and as a waiter in a nearby cafe. Nobody quite knows how he manages to find the time for all three, as well as the many other mysterious side-projects he's involved in, plus his active social life (he has allegedly been seen drinking White Lightning with homeless men on a bridge, and sipping cocktails at a black-tie event in an upmarket restaurant on the very same night).

Admittedly, he does seem to be hardly ever there. Most of his co-workers and fellow students remember him as an empty seat in the lecture hall or a dusty, deserted office desk (how he manages to keep his various jobs is another mystery, given his near constant absences). On the other hand, Chris has an eerie knack of turning up at critical moments. He might be working at the cafe the night a stranger, contemplating a major decision in their life, turns up and orders a coffee. He might introduce a fellow student to the woman who will become his wife -even though neither of them actually turn out to know him all that well. You might search and search for Chris for weeks, leaving messages on his (rarely used) mobile phone and asking for him in his (rarely slept-in) rooms in town, only to bump into him quite by chance in the supermarket one day, long after you'd given up. Although charming and friendly, he is remarkably evasive about what it is he does all day -often giving the impression that he has answered the question when all he has really done is open up more questions.
