Somewhere in the Black
00:23hrs, ship’s time

The pilot was playing games on the bridge again. Not that anyone cared at this hour or this stage of the journey. No one was awake to be inconvenienced by the sound effects issuing from the speakers and there were no spacecraft outside to see and avoid. Just a whole lot of empty and nothing to fill it.

Except for another 100,000 kills and a bonus round.

Yes! The pilot pumps his fist in the air. Killmaster Supreme. If only his mother could see him now, pilot of a bona fide spaceship, the master of all he surveyed. Well all right, the master of the bridge controls, at least. The ship also had a bona fide captain. An uptight stickler of a former military officer, but she was all right when she wasn’t acting all Captain-y.

Was Captain-y a real word?

Meh, no matter. The pilot keyed in the bonus round and started playing….and everything on the bridge went black.

“Oh, man! Not cool, man. So not cool!”

Spaceport, Whittier
Kalidasa (Xuan Wu) system
13:05 hrs, local time

Our client, Bess Franklin, is sorry but she cannot pay us for our cargo. She had planned to pay for it using a charitable contribution that had been promised but had failed to come in. The cargo itself is office supplies—furniture and computers and supplies like paper and pens and so forth. Perhaps she could pay us with some of the cargo in trade? As a charity, she hasn’t the cash on hand to pay us outright.

Christian arranges for once container’s worth of supplies and fresh food in lieu of payment. Business concluded, he looks for cargo to take us the rest of the way to Salisbury and finds us 4 2nd class passengers bound for it. They all pay up front and we use that cash to buy the fuel we need to get there. Two of the passengers are engineers, working their way to Beaumonde, just your ordinary wildcatters. The other two passengers are recruiters for corporate temp companies. The Tohoku class cruisers going offline has resulted in transfer of personnel off the ships, leading to an increased need for decommissioning staff.

It takes us two days to get to Salisbury from Whittier.
