Biography

Aldan Coleburn is an Akorosi native with an academic background; once he finished his formal schooling, he started working for various newspapers in Ink Lane, which prompted him to move from the meager family home in Six Towers to The Docks. Now in his late 20s, Aldan is an editor-at-large and occasional columnist for The Dockside Digest (a small publication with a small but intense readership) as well as its sister publication called The Imperial Inquirer, an absolute rag of conspiracy-oriented agitation that has a much broader scope of coverage but an even smaller subscriber base.

After years of writing about the daily happenings in his small part of Duskwall and investigating the web of corruption that oppresses the masses, Aldan has become obsessed with exposing this corruption – shining a lantern in the face of the major players and the criminals who advance their interests.

But as Aldan has grown more obsessed, his judgement has become somewhat skewed – and even the smallest illegality and conflict-of-interest fuels his outrage; this has resulted in his writing articles of rather uneven quality, with perhaps only one or two of his investigative stories having any real significance at all (but of course, very few people read the papers he works for, so it is almost certain that his articles had no real impact of their subjects). A year ago, Aldan suffered a savage attack; he has no real memory of what happened, but the weeks he spent recuperating in an infirmary were very real – as is the horribly deep scar on his chest. It looks as if someone or something dug repeatedly into his flesh in an attempt to remove his heart, only to be thwarted by his ribcage, which is now somewhat visible beneath his scarred flesh.

Aldan is convinced that his attack was inspired by an article that he published – but which article, and in which newspaper? He cannot be sure. He is in the process of rereading all his published works (a long-term project), sometimes coming across an article he has no recollection of writing, and so he fears his memory has suffered somewhat as a result of his attack.

His vice is Obligation. Oftentimes this manifests as his need to return to his desk at the newspaper office, where his work directing reporters and investigative journalists in the pursuit of corruption sates his zeal for justice. On other occasions, his obligation is to the crows in Admiralty Park, feeding them and caring for them in any way he can; his first memory after the attack is just a brief moment of consciousness, where he recalls lying on the stone walk of the park with these birds bouncing around him, cawing and pecking at his wound.

Aldan now knows that to expose the corruption and the criminal underworld, he must wade into their darkness and play their game. He is incredibly paranoid that his foray into the criminal lifestyle will bring immediate and fatal reprisals from whoever or whatever failed to finish him off; and so he commissioned a fine disguise in the form of a cap of black feathers that he wears to pass himself off as a bird-like Tycherosi in order to protect his identity. For his criminal activities, he goes by the name Feather Black.

As part of a Smuggler crew, Feather Black will be looking to exploit these new criminal contacts – looking for hints as to where they operate, who they really are, and what motivates their crimes.

His friend is Jeren, the Bluecoat archivist; Aldan has spent years cultivating him as a source – and so Jeren is only familiar with his young friend the journalist, rather than this weirdo criminal Feather Black.

His rival is Salia, the information broker; she is his longtime on-again-off-again paramour. Aldan is besotted with her (and even when they are off-again, as is the current situation, conducts himself as is she is his girlfriend) – and while she has returned the feeling, his paranoias and obsessions are too much for her to endure. The last time they were an item (briefly) was while he recuperated following the savage attack.
