Madame Shade's Grandmother Marie Barlow claimed that Joe was a family servant who agreed to become a zombie in order to better protect her and her family.  The only thing she would say about his past was that there were many things her preferred to forget.  The only name she gave for him was Joe Smith, but that is most likely an alias.  Perhaps he was some sort of escaped criminal who wanted a new identity, or maybe a man who was ready to commit suicide, but decided to be useful instead.

Some rivals of Marie Barlow claim that he was actually her husband, who she married out of town and then changed into a zombie when she couldn't control him with less drastic means.  Marie vehemently denied this when she was alive.  Madame Shade wonders if it might possibly be true, which would make Joe her possible Grandfather.  No one in New Orleans ever met the man and Marie always used her maiden name.  At any rate, Madame Shade is very protective of Joe.
