Threshhold's a big town and there's room for more than one kind of thief, but there's no room for a man who won't follow the Brotherhood's rules, and one of the most important rules is "Don't bother the Gods". When Bargle killed Aleena, it brought down the Watch on every thief in Threshhold, and Pox's own brother got clapped in irons. Moreover, Shifter, the secret god of thieves, made it known that this deed displeased Him, and that he would withhold his blessing from every heist and burglary in the city until this crime was avenged. Hence, Pox was deputized to help take Bargle down. If he succeeds, he gets his brother back and the Shifty Brotherhood will accept him as a full initiate. If he doesn't, best stay in the dungeon.

Additional backstory from Bonds: Pox stole a small black book -- the "Necro-something" -- from one of Bargle's toughs and he's been having nightmares ever since.  Good thing nobody knows he hid it in a hollow tree outside of town....
