The Pawn: Advice to the Adjudicator[edit]

Though the list is not exhaustive, be aware of game balance and game effects when adding new descriptors. Bear in mind that descriptors with drastic effects should normally be placed in Traits rather than Boons, as Boons are very easy to come by in-game.

Its generally not a good idea to overload Pawns with descriptors, or else the game gets too tricksy. At the start of the game, it is suggested that Pawns either have one trait each, or one boon and one drawback.

Boons for the Pawn[edit]

Attackers[edit]

Temporarily add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when it is part of a Summer Campaign.

Attrition-based Warfare[edit]

When this Pawn is Broken, one enemy Pawn becomes Broken as well. Indestructible armies may not receive this Boon.

Berserker[edit]

When this Pawn is part of a Summer Campaign, temporarily add +4 to this Pawn's Battle Strength. At the end of the Campaign, this Pawn is Broken. Indestructible armies may not receive this Boon.

Combined Arms Warfare[edit]

Temporarily add +1 to this Pawn's Battle Strength for each other Army in the same war defence or summer campaign.

Defenders[edit]

Temporarily add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when it is part of a War Defence.

Executioners[edit]

Counteract the Indestructible trait on opposing Pawns in battle.

Flyer[edit]

In battle, temporarily add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength if there are no enemy Armies with the Flyer boon.

Home Guard[edit]

Add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when led by a Rook.

Indestructible[edit]

The Pawn can not be Broken.

Poisonous[edit]

At the end of any Summer Campaign in which this Pawn takes part, one additional enemy Pawn in the battle is Broken. This boon is negated if any opposing pawns have the Indestructible boon.

Quality Troops[edit]

Add +1 to this Pawn's Battle Strength.

Ranged[edit]

In battle, temporarily add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength if there are no enemy Armies with the Ranged boon.

Raiders[edit]

During Summer Campaigns with the plunder objective this Pawn plunders for 2 Glamour instead of 1 Glamour.

Royal Troops[edit]

Add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when led by a Queen or King.

Scouts[edit]

Add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when it is part of the first Summer Campaign in the Kingdom's Campaign List.

Skirmishers[edit]

Temporarily add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength if it is the only Army you control in a war defence or summer campaign.

Soldier's Discipline[edit]

Add +2 to this Pawn's Battle Strength when led by a Knight.

Stealth[edit]

If all your Armies in a Summer Campaign have Stealth, then the War Defence against them may not include more armies in total than in your attacking force.

Versatile[edit]

This Pawn must have at least one Trait. At the start of each Summer, the Pawn can decide whether the Trait is active or not.

War Machines[edit]

During Summer Campaigns with the pillage objective this Pawn temporarily add +4 to this Pawn's Battle Strength.

Drawbacks for the Pawn[edit]

Complex[edit]

Reduce the King's Dreaming rating by one, so long as this Army is not Broken.

Commander's Household[edit]

This Pawn may only join Summer Campaigns and War Defences led by a particular Piece, named when this Drawback is established.

Dependent[edit]

Summer Campaigns and War Defences that include this Pawn must include at least two other Pawns.

Expensive[edit]

It costs 3 Glamour to renew this Army

Fuelled[edit]

You must pay 1 Glamour each time you include this Pawn in a Summer Campaign or War Defence.

Hungry[edit]

In years where you have Priority reduce the King's Harvest rating by one, so long as this Army is not Broken.

Low Quality[edit]

Reduce this Pawn's Battle Strength by one.

Poor Morale[edit]

At the end of any War Defence or Summer Campaign, this Pawn is Broken. May not be combined with any Boons that have the word Broken in their effect descriptions.

Single Focus[edit]

Select one campaign objective - this Pawn can only join Summer Campaigns with this objective, and can only join War Defences against this campaigns with this objective.

Ineffective Attackers[edit]

This Pawn cannot join Summer Campaigns.

Ineffective Defenders[edit]

This Pawn cannot join War Defences.

Wheeled[edit]

This Pawn's flexibility is limited by its wheels not being able to handle all terrains. At the start of any Summer Campaign or War Defence the Pawn has been assigned to roll a D6. On the roll of "1" the pawn's Battle Strength is reduced to 0 for the duration of the battle.

Traits for the Pawn[edit]

We Are Legion[edit]

The Glamour cost to renew this Pawn is reduced to 0. Battle Strength is reduced by -2. May not be combined with Versatile.

Independent[edit]

Summer Campaigns and War Defences that include this Pawn do not need to include a back row piece as Attack/Defence Commander, and cannot do so even if you want them to! Also, Summer Campaigns and War Defences that include this Pawn may never include any other Pawns.

Naval[edit]

Summer Campaigns that include this Army follow the rules as below:

  • All Armies in the same Summer Campaign as this Army must have the Naval trait or Flyer boon.
  • War Defences against Summer Campaigns that include this Army may not have any armies that do not have the Naval trait or Flyer boon.

War Defences that include this Army follow the rules as below:

  • All Armies in the same War Defence as this Army must have the Naval trait or Flyer boon.
  • This Army can only join War Defences against Summer Campaigns that include at least one Army with the Naval trait.
  • Armies with the Naval trait cannot attempt Summer Campaigns with the Checkmate objective.

Unpredictable[edit]

At the start of each Summer, roll D6 and add one. This is the Army's new Battle Strength. Any Boons or Drawbacks that effect battle strength apply after this roll.
