Anaphis was brought up on an isolated monastic colony dedicated to study of the Prophets. The colony was rural and agricultural in nature, supplying much of its own food and supplies, and as a child he hated time spent working in the fields as he was more interested in the wider galaxy. Finally, tired of the community's disapproval of his "lack of focus", he left to pursue his own interests. This caused a rift with his parents who had hopes he'd follow in their footsteps, maybe even become a Vedek.

He joined the Bajoran Resistance, where the skills of his rural upbringing came in useful and they taught him to fight. For a while he thought he'd found his purpose, but he found the cell's leadership driven by hatred and as fanatical in their own way as the people from his home colony. Disillusioned, he left.

He drifted for a while, taking work wherever he found it - especialy if it gave him the opportunity to travel. He even went to Bajor after the Cardassian occupation ended, and worked as a labourer in reconstruction efforts. Still, he never felt like he'd found the path the Prophets intended for him.

One day, after praying for guidance, he was knocked off his feet by a Starfleet officer who was rushing down the street. The officer was apologetic, and they got to talking over deka tea where the officer dispelled some of the misconceptions Anaphis had picked up from his parents. After some thought, he decided the Prophets had put the officer in his path for a reason and enlisted in Starfleet. During testing he scored more highly in security than any other discipline and was routed to security training.

The first ship he was assigned to, the USS Kittiwake, was destroyed in battle during the Dominion War (Career Event: Ship Destroyed). Stranded with the other survivors on a rural world, Anaphis found it amusing that his childhood skills helped them to survive until Starfleet rescued them. Later he was mentored by the same officer who'd persuaded him into Starfleet (Career Event: Mentored), and who introduced him to a new role in Starfleet intelligence.

Despite the rift with his parents - which only deepened when he joined Starfleet - Anaphis retains a strong faith, and believes the Prophets have a different path for everyone.
