MARIGOLD'S NOTES[edit]

Valthrax, black dragon of the North[edit]

Shackled by the Emperor to make way for his expansionary conquests, this immortal dragon was pressed into service against the most insurmountable fortresses of his numerous enemies. Valthrax is a calamity borne aloft on massive wings, and there was rumoured to be no defence against his fire.

Bride of Valthrax[edit]

Mortal kind can bind with the immortal beings. But it is never easy, and almost never without risk. Among countless victims, Marigold was a survivor turned champion – a weapon in the emperor’s arsenal. Her heart beats in steady time to Valthrax’s furnace-core and, burning just as hot, this has given her a spark of his strength. With it, she has some dominion over his all-consuming fire…though she has sworn never again to use it.

The sliver of Valthrax nestled in Marigold's heart ever seeks to control her - to subsume her will into its own. To warp her body until nothing is left except the dragon she has been married to.
His voice whispers in her ears - seductive and enticing. She is a conduit of his power and a vessel of his will. And one day she will lose her fight and the dragon shall be reborn.

The Dragon’s Butcher[edit]

As a champion in service to tyranny, Marigold was neither kind nor merciful. To those few who survived her bloody work, she is assuredly a monster. And to those who know her past, she is the all but unforgiveable spectre of a dead empire...just one more evil remnant decaying in the light of a better world.

Ash-Tongue[edit]

A jet-black sword forged from the bone of Imilthrax, son of Valthrax, and set with his ruby-crystal eye. Even while sheathed, it is warm to the touch and nearby flames dance toward its blade. It has never once been sharpened, and never once been broken.

Ash-Tongue is poison. It warps the body and corrupts the mind. This blade will steal your will and puppet your corpse. But it cannot let another get there first. And it cannot win against its father.
So Ash-Tongue controls the flames of Valthrax and mitigates his curse. If ever a time comes when Marigold is weak, he will steal her flesh - kicking and screaming. But until then, it can only
scheme against its father. Standing bulwark against his flames. And so Marigold lives yet as herself - clinging to this traitorous sword. A cursed lifeline.
