Appearance & Demeanor

Mathis is a handsome young man, with tan skin, black eyes, and curly black hair. He is a dandy, who always dresses in the finest clothes he can afford—even when doing so is not particularly practical. He rarely seems to take anything serious and often lacks the motivation to much of anything—though is now fired up with the purpose of becoming a great hero. He overestimates his own abilities and can be rather naïve about the world beyond the wealthy, somewhat sheltered childhood he had.

Notes & Background

Mathis grew up as the child of notables in Elsport, Elspeth and Zinia. Elspeth is a regional noble, the Chief of the City Watch, and Zinia is the head of a successful merchant house and is involved in numerous charitable causes. While they went about carrying out their duties, worker hard, Elspeth trying to make the city safer and Zinia trying to make it more prosperous, Mathis did as little as possible. When he became teenager, Elspeth insisted he learn basic combat skills, personally drilling him. He showed a natural gift for it—and a total disinclination to actually apply himself to mastering it. Mathis did have some enthusiasm for learning, but of the sort where he read voraciously without actually any do of the lessons that were required of him. He was especially interested in history and tales of the heroes of old. Things only got worse as he got older. He would spend his days lazing about the house—and his nights in taverns, drinking and gambling away his mothers’ hard-earned money. For years, Elspeth and Zinia tried to get him to straighten out his act, to no avail. Finally, when he was well into adulthood, they gave him an ultimatum—he must start learning some useful trade or they would throw him out of the house. Mathis didn’t take the threat seriously—but Elspeth and Zinia did indeed throw him out, telling him not to come back until he made something of himself.

Elspeth and Zinia had been hoping that he would apply to a guild to learn a useful trade—indeed, they had told him they would help him out in doing so. Instead, Mathis took into his head to become like one of the great heroes he read about and become an adventurer. He used his personal connections to sleep over at various friends’ houses. His friend—and former causal lover—Naya Semmestris, is now putting him up more-or-less permanently (though Mathis keeps on promising he will move out once he has enough money to afford a place of his own). Naya is the heiress of a successful merchant house and has now become active in managing it. She views Mathis’ antics with good-natured amusement—an opinion not shared either by her parents or her new husband, Jannick. Mathis has also recently used his connections to secure himself a place working for a noble charged with cleaning up organized crime in Elsport.
