Background
Merwin Sonderlan is the son of Berith Sonderlan, who runs the town's general store, and an unknown elven father - he was a charming wanderer who came through town years ago and spent a single night with Berith. She refuses to tell Merwin his name, reasoning that it's completely irrelevant to his life now and is therefore best forgotten. As a half-elf, Merwin grew up more slowly than the children who were his peers, and as a result his mother was very protective of him.

He learned to read and cipher in order to help Berith in the store, and soon discovered a rapacious love of reading in general, greedily devouring any of the few books than came through town, and hanging on the tales of other lands told by any travelers. When he reached his teenage years, he discovered a talent with magic - specifically, conjuration and summoning magic. The town's mage, Thelman Rissel, did his best to tutor the young half-elf.

Now of age - he's 22, though he looks younger - Merwin has determined that he's going to see something of the outside world no matter what it takes.
