Most of the factions by this point have given up on grand dreams of conquest- they still have goals they fight over, but have no intention of anything like the old Empire being restored. There is, however, one exception. The exceptional faction, out of sheer ideological stubborness, decides to make one last great campaign of world conquest despite being greatly outnumbered by a coalition of other factions. Ultimately, they do very well under the circumstances but are defeated, dooming their state to destruction and confirming once and for all the Empire will in no way, shape, or form be restored.
Several miscellaneous things also go on in the meantime, of course. Amongst one things one of the factional warlords wins a great battle by having his advisor's wife executed to allow them to falsely defect, another one dooms a once great faction to destruction through a series of bad decisions, and another manages to, through the combined valor and cunning of several lesser heroes, finally defeat and kill a legendary hero of the wars.
