Kill Bargle!

System: Dungeon World

Kill Bargle Player Characters

Setting

  • The player characters are based out of Threshold, a city on Windrush Lake.
  • Some say Bargle has ties to the mysterious Castle Mistamere, some six to ten days travel to the north (unless it rains, turning the roads to pure mud), on Windrush Lake. The castle was built by the self-proclaimed "Technomancer," Lord Gygar. Combinining strange, clockwork machinery with his particular brand of whimsical enchantments, he ruled a relatively small territory in peace for many years, before disappearing. The castle lay unclaimed, and stories of strange automatons and complex traps guarding its halls steered most people clear of the place. Now, nearly a century later, it is said to be haunted by monsters and ghosts in addition to ruined -- or nearly ruined -- machinery.
  • About 20 years ago, a rebellion rose up against a baron that had laid claim to the region containing Threshold. Although successful, Threshold's independence was hard won. The Watch was reduced to a paltry force, and the current ruler -- Lord Marnin Wyvernjack -- has proven to be little more than a corruptible, ineffectual leader, barely capable of collecting taxes and organizing the Watch. What little good comes from his regime mostly seems to stem from his overworked Guard, led by the charismatic Sergeant Maleon Stridesword.
  • In recent years, the "barbarian" people of the Golden Kingdom have come from across the sea in small numbers aboard trading and exploratory vessels.

Threshold

  • The Visitor's Ward: On the outskirts of the city, known for rampant petty crime but little worse.
  • Master Scalzi's Stables:
  • The Avenue of Healers: Along the Avenue, one can find herbalists, leechers, surgeon barbers, and makers of prosthetics.
    • The Temple of Healing: The Temple is a large building of gleaming white stone with gold accents. Its exterior is plain, but its many soaring spires give it an air of grandeur. Inside, it is as much hospital as it is temple. Several large wards are filled with beds for patients. Alongside the wards are a score of small chapels where the faithful can offer sacrifices to Sil. Overseeing the temple are two women, the High Priestess Nyla Drasphae and the High Healer Enoren Eesimor. One oversees the spiritual duties of the temple's many priests and clerics, while the other oversees the temple's mission to offer healing and succor to those in need.

Rumors

  • Farmers and loggers at the edge of the swamps near Castle Gygar -- often plagued by kobolds -- say they've seen a human traveling the roads during daylight hours that fits the sinister look of Bargle: a bony, cloaked fellow with a particularly twirled, thin mustache and rat-like eyes.
  • A new trade route will pass very near to Threshold, causing an increase in population and passing travelers.
  • Castle Mistamere is rumored to change its structure and even its location. It's said that the Castle features doors that open and close by themselves when someone approaches. The Castle has a fortune in clockworks and gems inside it, but the traps are too deadly for even a master thief. Every few years some fool tries to loot it and never comes back. Among its treasures are The Discreet Servitor, said to be a mechanical man the size of a halfling who eats gems and never sleeps and can do anything perfectly -- but none have seen it.
  • The swamps around Castle Mistamere seek to kill those that trespass within (carnivorous plants?). It's also said that they are full of vampire bats.
  • Old Man Moffatt owns a farm that is more swamp than crop. Always was a bit crazy, but that made him enjoyable, and memorable. So Castor has noticed that the crazy old man hasn't been in town for supplies in months.
  • Pox:
    • "The farmers and loggers used to come into town on feast-days, you could roll them when they got drunk, but haven't seen them much any more. Maybe they found a different place to drink and pass out?"
    • "I saw a little mechanical bird that could chase away crows and sing beautifully, though, in a wealthy man's house. Didn't take it, though, how can you fence something that's unique?"
  • Jon:
    • The High Priestess warned Jon to beware the machinations of Horrag, the foul god of Poison, Disease, and Madness. According to temple seers, his interference in the mission is almost a certainty.
  • Xia the Mirthful:
    • "I did hear a story about this castle, that the soldiers who were set to guard it had a powerful spell placed upon them, so that they still stand guard now, even in death."

Deities

  • Saewe, The Lady of Justice, The Cruel One - takes the form of a young woman with the head of a lizard. She is very tall and has a curvy build. She is usually portrayed as wearing a colorful outfit, which incorporates sword designs. She carries a measuring rod.
  • Sil, Goddess of Healing and Restoration - patron of The Temple of Healing in Threshold.
  • Shifter, the Secret God of Thieves - worshipped by the Shifty Brotherhood, which has a monopoly on the thieves' guild(s) of the realm.
  • Horrag, the Foul God of Poison, Disease, and Madness - patron to the denizens of fens, moors, and blighted lands.

NPCs

  • Brilda, a singer and artist, with prematurely silvery-gray hair since her early twenties and brown eyes, slender, almost frail-looking, and pale-skinned. The woman Castor left behind when he went to serve in the rebellion.
  • Thalos Varr, Pox's older brother, currently held by the Shifty Brotherhood. A slender second-story man with a fondness for jewels and rare vintages. He's four years older than Pox's 19, and was always smarter and better looking on account of not having had the pox as a baby, but he was a good brother to him and got him started in the life. Poor Thalos was taken in the act in the wine cellar of the Spicer's Guild factor in town as he was sorting through the dusty bottles for a special order -- it was the third time he'd done it, but this time the guards took his bribe and copped him all the same. He's been jugged like a hare in the watch's dungeon for months now, and the bribes to the guards to keep him alive are getting expensive.
  • Fat John, the emaciated fellow that sells the newcomers used horses by the city gate. The horses are purely genius at slipping their halters overnight and coming home; Fat John swears there's no magic involved, just hard work and equine intelligence. He likes Pox, which means he charges him a fair price for services even though he ain't a Brother.
  • Master Roderick Scalzi, a weasely man with thick spectacles and a penchant for wearing tailored clothing and fine vests above his station, owner of Master Scalzi's Stables, where Castor worked as a stablehand up until recently.

Threshold's High-ups

  • Lord Marnin Wyvernjack, mayor of Threshold. A corruptible, ineffectual leader, barely capable of collecting taxes and organizing the Watch.
  • Sergeant Maleon Stridesword, one of the heads of the Lord's Watch, a charismatic fellow strained by the stress of fighting losing battles, both physical and political.

Bargle's Gang

  • Bargle, a bony, cloaked fellow with a particularly twirled, thin mustache and rat-like eyes. Murdered the local cleric named Aleena for unknown reasons. A petty criminal previously.
