Complications:

Motivation - Acceptance: Nightshade has stereotypically 'bad people' powers and is the daughter of a supervillain. Trying to be a hero is a way to both make up for the evil her mother did, and find a way to be accepted in her own right.

Accident: Nightshade's control over her powers is far from complete, especially if she gets scared or angry. Although she's unable to consciously summon or control the creatures from the shadow dimension that her mother was infamous for, they can creep out sometimes. So far they've only been mischievous imps, but as she gets more powerful so will they.

Secret Identity: Nightshade has the usual issues of trying to keep her identity secret and juggling her everyday life with heroing.

Power Loss/Vulnerability: Bright light, like broad daylight or floodlights, will stop most of Nightshade's powers from working. Her shadow form is particularly vulnerable to light- or fire-based attacks.

Reputation: Nightshade makes no secret that she's the daughter of Deadly Nightshade, and many judge her for her mother's deeds.

Background:

Deadly Nightshade was a supervillainous sorcerer with control over shadows, drawing her power from a realm of darkness and commanding its denizens. In her final battle against the Sentinels, her attempt to summon an army of shadow demons was foiled and Sovereign was forced to banish her to the shadow realm in order to close the rift. She left behind a daughter, who became a ward of the state, her records locked in the hopes she could live a normal life.

Seren grew up knowing none of this. She spent her childhood in and out of foster homes, trouble always seeming to follow her around. Other children had nightmares. Things went missing, or broke. If Seren was upset, or angry, or had a bad day...so did everyone around her. What she didn't realise was that her misfortune was something more, the manifestation of the shadow powers she'd inherited from her mother.

It wasn't until her teenage years, with her powers growing ever stronger, that Sovereign decided he had to intervene. Seren's attempts at finding her family had only met with frustration, and keeping her ignorant of her abilities was doing nothing to quell them. And so he told her the truth of who she was and what she was capable of.

Another hero, the martial artist Devil Tiger, taught her the meditation and discipline she needed to bring her magic under control. Determined to use her powers for good, for a while she trained as Devil Tiger's sidekick, under the name Hellcat. But now she's decided to redeem her mother's name. By day Seren is a college student in ancient history. By night, she calls herself Nightshade.
