History

It is my great honor to be Lao Xiaobo, liaison to the Barbaric West in His Most Powerful Celestial Majesty's Ministry of State, and attendant to the Most Worthy Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade Wan Li Wen. To my everlasting sorrow, Master Wan has recently perished -- the victim of extreme exertion in the act of lovemaking. The Deputy Minister did so enjoy availing himself of Lord Piergeiron's hospitality in this manner, and few are the escorts in the Paladinson's employ who did not recognize the nobly plump visage of Wan Li Wen.

As a dutiful servant of the Mandarinate of Shou Lung, I have spent countless hours at my master's side in the court of the Open Lord's palace, amazed and agape at the rituals of courtly life here in this western metropolis. It seemed to me that Master Wan took little interest in his solemn duty to facilitate trade between the Uttermost West and mighty Shou Lung, may the Emperor strike me down for saying so. While the minister took his leisure in the pleasure houses of the Castle Ward, I learned all I could of the intricate dance of favors, politics, and intrigue that defined power among the elite.

In my own spare time, I have studied the western martial arts of the long sword and shield with the renowned master Myrmith Splendon in the Trades Ward. I find the style crude but brutally effective, and Splendon has remarked on my aptitude.

I must admit that I have become more and more enamored of these western barbarians and their unrefined customs. I find myself in a state of diplomatic limbo here in the palace, bereft of the Deputy Minister. Lord Piergeiron has been accommodating and gracious, but I yearn to test my western steel against a worthy foe, and to experience the full breadth of life here in the forgotten West. Adventure awaits on the streets of Waterdeep, and I fear I lack the discipline to resist its siren call.
