Background

Researcher by day, wrestler by night, Dr Sam Kawaguchi is a well built but unassuming man of mixed Japanese/Greek heritage. A New Orleans native, he attended UW Madison on a wrestling scholarship, before moving on to the University of Chicago for his graduate and doctorate work. Sam was an adjunct professor of history at Tulane for a time, but his Awakening made that life unsustainable. He now works as a freelance researcher, digging through records for academics, laywers and journalists.

He is also a lifelong wrestler of great skill, good enough to try out for the US Olympic team in 2008. It was during the tryouts that his awakening began. He experienced visions and hallucinations, matches becoming mighty dominance battles between rutting stags and boars. The distraction caused him to lose critical points and he failed to place. The failure was crushing and he rejected wrestling (and, subconsciously the Awakening) for years. He devoted himself to study and fought to ignore the visions when they came. He especially stayed away from wild places, as they seemed to be a trigger. The visions faded in frequency and intensity, and he was able to complete his doctorate and get a position at Tulane. Returning home permanently, he reconnected with old friends and was convinced to go camping. In the dark of the bayou, he became disoriented and lost, wandering for what seemed like days. When he was at his lowest point he was attacked by a huge and monstrous boar, and was forced to wrestle the great beast to survive. The primal struggle completed his Awakening.

In the years since he has reconnected with his wrestling roots and has become deeply involved in the local Pro Wrestling scene. He fights under the name Professor Suplex, and is known for technical skill and stage presence. He performs masked, luchador style, but doesn't take huge pains to conceal his real identity. There have been offers from major wrestling concerns, and while Sam has rebuffed them so far, he is tempted to reach for wrestling fame and glory.

In his Shadow Guise as Antaeus, he is loyal if detached member of the New Orleans consilium and Louisiana Mysterium causus. He is working on an exhaustive history of the supernatural in Louisiana, which brings him into much closer contact with the broader shadow community than the average mage, which is both useful and annoying to his fellow magi. He has also been less diligent in his magical studies then perhaps he ought to be. The awakening was a mixed blessing to Sam; he has the mage's obsession with knowing hidden truths, but the herky-jerky way he came in to his power has twice disrupted his life. He is leery of what it will do to him next, and isn't entirely opposed to the idea of just putting it down and living a normal life.

Sam is a well built but unassuming man - with a shirt on. In his daily life he's friendly, polite, a touch mild and a terrible liar. Doctor Suplex (and Antaeus) are larger than life, bold, brash and magnetic. Women want him, man want to be him. He commands the ring and dominates his opponents. He fears neither man, monster or spirit - cross him and he'll make you submit!
