The Hapless Hero

Shieldmaiden of Blood

Riley is more or less a normal young girl. She grew up on Little Island with her family, attends school and helped out in the library. Thing is though, she’s also a hero! Or destined to be at least – it’s a thing that happens to some McArthur’s you understand. Riley loved the idea when she was little. She’d be just like her great, great uncle she thought…! But now, a smidge older, she has the feeling that her destiny is very dark indeed and she has decided that being a hero is a terrible idea after all.

…only, trying to avoid destiny rarely works. And not acting the hero is a little like lying to herself as well. Woe is her!

Traits

[2] Bond: It’s…it’s the right thing to do
Riley’s at her best when she’s working toward some noble or selfless purpose. If she’s doing the right things for the right reasons – if she lives up to her destiny! – then she can draw on the very best of herself.

[X] Affliction: There’s no escaping destiny
It isn’t looking like Riley’s heroic destiny will be a comfy ride. And some McArthur’s meet grisly ends vanquishing some nasty or another. Riley’s looks dark, imposing (maybe even important!) but…she can’t turn away.

Riley's seen thirteen winters - growing up on Little Island, where the days are always halcyon. She's a middle child in a large family; too large and too hectic. A good family, but one where you always have to fight for attention and where the much older or the much younger have the sway.

She loves to read, she enjoys cooking, likes cosy naps and can't help but help people. She's a hero! But she'd never admit that - went off that idea a long time ago. Even if avoiding that facet of herself is just a big lie. Even if avoiding it just makes her life miserable. Even if she can't avoid it. She still lies to herself.

Arc

Aspect Story: The Hero

Riley's tale isn't one of becoming a hero, that's something she already is, but of accepting it. She jumped at the call and is now searching for a way out - instead of shouldering her responsibilities. She needs to come to terms with her destiny, accept it, and face it with her head held high.

Quests

Lead a Normal Life
Type of Quest: Chibi
XP: 0/15

Riley's basic-quest involves her trying to lead a normal life. She wants to go to school, hang out with her friends, have fun and maybe be a little bit goofy. Even if the world were falling apart - in defiance of her destiny and the forces arrayed against her - she desperately just wants to enjoy things that are quiet, peaceful and normal. That's just who she is.
