Captain Cornelius is a rogue, a ne'er-do-well, an opportunist, and puts a smiling face on all of it. He runs the Nightmast Flyer, what was once an Imperial Frigate. He is the sole scion of the Brechter dynasty, or so he says. For a long time he operated, as his Warrant permits, outside the borders of the Imperium. Although he was never of noble blood, his long sojourns left he and his crew far... less concerned... with the typical social contracts of Imperial life - and with it's written laws, too. A series of disastrous heists lead to Cornelius polishing his armour (making it no less black and pitted), brushing down his ludicrous coat, and pledging to the Varonius Flotilla... with every intention of breaking the oath as soon as was most expeditious.

The Nightmast Flyer happened to be in the right place to spot the hulk dropping into the system, and Captain Cornelius spied a rare opportunity for loot and plunder. Background[edit]

Name: Captain Cornelius Scalus Vorbis Brechter
Hair: Bald; black beard braids
Eyes: Grey/augmetic red
Height: 194 cm

Tall. A single baleful red augmetic eye. An unlikely beard of long black plaits each tipped with a smouldering blue lho-stone. Articulated armour plates as black and pitted as ancient iron. An improbably red, improbably great greatcoat clearly stolen and barely retailored. These are the first things most notice about Captain Cornelius Brechter. The second thing tends to be how festooned with weapons he has made himself. A strange gun resembling in some respects a flintlock is never far from his hand; it matches no current Imperial pattern but the barrel constantly emits a heat-haze shimmer, and it is fed from an armoursteel sphere that is always warm to the touch. Blades and muzzles of many types jut from here and there.

Making his way aboard was easy enough; but his landing party ran into a series of lethal problems and the Captain now finds himself looking for new allies to find the Vault and make good his escape...
