Background

Amycus Boot is the eldest child of Dominic Lyall Boot, a former Seeker himself, and Mairead Morganach, a local Scottish Witch. His parents met at school and settled down near Mairead's family, not far from Hogsmeade village and Hogwarts school itself. Amycus is descended from Webster Boot, as is his first cousin Terry. He has only taken the Hogwarts Express once, in the summer before his first year after after he and his parents spent their summer holiday with Terry's family in London. Amycus has walked with his parents to the train station in Hogsmeade since then.

Having grown up near Hogsmeade, Amycus knows the village and locals very well, and they know him. His family is pure blood, descended from old families, but neither poor nor wealthy. His parents are both well known academics on ancient magical anthropology and paleology, with Amycus' mother having a reputation of being something of a quack in certain circles. She also has many cats. Their house has a tendency to sprout chicken legs and move about occasionally after getting tired of the view.

The Morganach family has a reputation for eccentricity, which many say has clearly manifested in Amycus. Most of the locals are accustomed to that sort of thing as the family has lived near these parts for quite a few generations, so some chuckle, some scowl, but most pay not much mind at all, depending upon their personal disposition or view of the Morganach family. A few of Amycus' ancestors (and Terry's) were Hogwarts staff and their portraits yet hang on the walls of Hogwarts. The most recent being a Ravenclaw Charms professor in the early 20th century (a great great uncle).

Amycus joined Dumbledore's army early in 1996, during his second year at Hogwarts, at the urging of his cousin Terry. He was caught and reprimanded by Dolores along with the rest of the DA members, but remained confined and out of trouble until the ousting of Umbridge and restoration of Dumbledore.

His third year was more or less an 'ordinary' school year up until Dumbledor's death. He didn't have the coin with him when the Death Eaters came, he was actually in Hogsmeade, so he wasn't in the battle of the tower but he kept the coin upon him from then on.

In his fourth year, last year, he rejoined DA when the call went out again. He participated in escalating rebellions with other DA students, conspiring with Luna, Terry, and Michael Corner most frequently due to opportunity, and ended up hiding in the Room of Requirement for the last few weeks proceeding the battle with Voldemort. He snuck out of the Room of Requirement with others considered to be underage and took part in the battle. He spent a lot of time alongside Terry and Michael at the beginning, but was separated and at one point trapped. He helped deliver wounded and dead to the Great Hall after the battle, and witnessed Harry Potter 'return' to life. He fought in the final battle on a stolen broom, leading Death Eaters on goose chases around the castle.

He's returned to Hogwarts with mixed emotions. Outwardly, he still resembles the deadpan weirdo he was of yesteryear, but inwardly he's more pensive, distracted, and withdrawn. He can occasionally be found standing quietly in certain sections of the castle, staring at nothing, or talking softly with certain obscure paintings. Inspired by his father, he did successfully try out for Ravenclaw Seeker this year, and between that and some new friends, his spirits have been rising, OWLs or no. He's not terribly concerned about passing his OWLs, he's quite confident (perhaps rashly) about his chances, but he hasn't been neglecting his studies either.

Which class do you hate the most? Which one do you look forward to?

He really tried to make History of Magic interesting, there are all of these neat little bits tucked away in the dry lectures, but he gets distracted by odd minutia and has trouble staying focused during the lessons.

He loves Flying unreservedly.

The thing you fixed as part of repairing the school, it was a difficult casting but you see it every day on your way to lessons, what is it and who knows?

A small magical bird fountain that had been destroyed during the battle, by a curse that had also killed a student. Amycus remembered seeing that student sitting and chatting with their friends in happier times, and he repaired it in memory of them, when most were busy with more practical concerns. He had sought out Professor Flitwick to help with restoring the charm upon the fountain, and though the Professor had probably not yet slept for almost three days, he proceeded at once to assist before retiring for a well-earned slumber. There's still something a bit strange about the fountain, stemming from Amycus' charm.

Which one of the other characters had your back when you really needed it?

Victoria Fothergill-Cammish helped Amycus deal with his PTSD and keep his head above water enough through the first term to handle trying out for, and playing as, Ravenclaw's new Seeker.

Who impressed the heck out of you and what did they do?

Sable Le Croix, for being so refreshingly and unrepentently herself upon starting her first year at Hogwarts under the present circumstances, and handling not insigificant resentment or disapproval for her unabashedly Slytherin identity. Knowing someone in his class who hadn't suffered through the previous year at Hogwarts was something of a balm. Also for bringing a lot of voodoo to Hogwarts, which is fun.

Which location in Hogwarts do you actively seek to avoid and why?

The 7th floor corridor where he'd first witnessed students wantonly slain by Death Eaters.

What were you doing during the battle of Hogwarts, what did you see?

He snuck out of the Room of Requirement with others considered to be underage and took part in the battle. He spent a lot of time alongside Terry Boot at the beginning, who was angered at his appearance, but was separated and at one point trapped. He helped deliver wounded and dead to the Great Hall after the battle, and witnessed Harry Potter 'return' to life. He fought in the final battle on a stolen broom, leading Death Eaters on goose chases all about the castle.

You are taking your O.W.Ls this year - what about is keeping you awake at night?

He's not concerned at all, but he probably should be. Victoria keeps telling him so. But she worries too much, she's a prefect after all.

What happened at the Yule ball?

Professor Flitwick refused to allow him in with the dress robes he originally devised for himself because they reflected all surrounding light back out in prismatics and produced some rather strange smells. Amycus had intended the robes to smell Christmas-y, but something must have gone wrong with that. It was a good thing that his father had delivered his own dress robes by owl well before the ball, and Amycus cut a rather more impressive figure in his father's robes for his partner, Orla Quirke, who had been rather put out about the way things were going until they were finally allowed in.
