Rule Set:[edit]

Initial Rules[edit]

Rule 1 (Immutable)

This game shall be called Tangenomic IV and it shall consist of rules which shall be identified by numbers and the sum of which shall be called the ruleset. Rules have two states, Mutable and Immutable. Mutable rules may be changed in any way not otherwise prohibited by the current ruleset. Immutable rules may be changed to Mutable rules, but not otherwise altered. No single action may both change the mutability of one or more rules and alter the actual text of a rule. Any new rules shall be initially mutable. Should two rules conflict, the rule with the lower number shall prevail. The Ruleset shall not be altered save as described within the rules.

Rule 2 (Immutable)

This game shall contain a gamestate, being all the non rule information which the ruleset tracks and interacts with. The gamestate shall not be altered save as described within the rules

Rule 3 (Immutable)

This game shall have players. The names and number of players shall be part of the gamestate. Only registered members of RPG.net may become players. To become a player a member must post in this thread clearly indicating their intent to join the game. Players begin the game with 10 points, the number of points a player has being part of the gamestate. Players may elect to become inactive for a specified period of time, during which no alteration to their points or other aspects of the gamestate associated to the specific player shall be permitted. If any active player fails to post for a period of one week, or an inactive one for a period of one week after the end of their specified period of inactivity, then they shall be removed from the game and should they rejoin the game in the manner described above all aspects of the gamestate associated with them shall be reset to the initial values of a new player.

Rule 4 (Immutable)

One player shall be designated the Speaker, this designation being part of the gamestate. The Speaker shall post an update of the current ruleset and gamestate no less frequently than every 50 posts as well as fulfill any additional duties assigned to him by later rules. There may be only one speaker at a time. The Speaker may resign his position by posting his intent to do so within this thread, at which time no changes to the gamestate or ruleset may be made save the selection of a new Speaker by a majority of the players who vote on the identity of the speaker within 48 hours of his resignation.

Rule 5 (Mutable)

Players may alter the ruleset and/or the gamestate. The means by which this is done is the posting of proposals. To be valid proposals must be posted as quotes with an author attribition of Proposal. No later than 48 hours after the posting of a valid proposal the Speaker shall assign that proposal an identifying number and present it for a vote. All active players may vote on a proposal presented by the Speaker. To be valid a vote on Proposition X, where X is the identifying number assigned by the speaker, must be a bolded statement approximating the form "I vote in favor of Proposition number X" or "I vote against Proposition X." Voting will remain open for 48 hours after the Speaker's presentation of the proposal, or until all currently active players have voted. A proposition will pass immediately if at any time the favorable votes are a equal to a majority of the currently active players, and it will pass at the end of the voting period if the favorable votes equal or exceed the votes against it, if neither of these conditions are met the proposition will have failed.

Rule 6 (Immutable)

Items are possessions of a player awarded by rules or successful proposals. The possession of an item by a player is part of the gamestate. The quantity of each type of item possessed by a player is part of the gamestate. Items are not transferable between players unless explicitly stated as such in the rules. Items are not transferable between type unless explicitly stated so in the rules. Unless otherwise stated, when a new item is introduced all players have zero instances of that item.

Rule 7 (Immutable)

To achieve victory a player must accrue 100 points and satisfy at least one other rule describing a condition of victory.

Rule 8 (Mutable)

Each proposal a player makes costs 1 point if it should fail and awards 5 points should it succeed.

Passed Propositions[edit]

Rule 102 (Mutable)

Each player has an identity which is part of the gamestate. The identity is the only means by which they may be referred to in the gamestate and the rules. On joining, and enactment of this proposal, each player's identity is set to their rpg.net username, save for the user whose identity would be set to bubbles by this proposal, whose identity becomes Teucer Prime.

Rule 103 (Mutable)

Loss of points may cause a player to fall below 0 points. Players with a negative point total may still make proposals at the cost of 1 point. Players with a negative point total are considered to be In Debt.

Rule 104 (Mutable)

A title is a modifier to an identity. The number and type of titles applied to an identity is part of the gamestate. An identity X with a title Y shall be known as "X, the Y". All new identities shall have zero titles.

Rule 106 (Mutable)

This game of Tangenomic shall contain a class of items which will be known as Hats, but also include anything else worn on the head. Hats in Tangenomic will be described both by the item of real world apparel they mimic, and by a descriptor(e.g. Knit Cap of Cunning, Tiara of Sparkliness). Hats have two states, Worn, and Not Worn.

Any Player who possesses one or more Hats must Wear at least one of these Hats. No player may Wear more than one Hat simultaneously unless some future proposal explicitly allows a particular player or Hat to violate this limitation.

Rule 107 (Mutable)

All players in this game of Tangenomic may declare an Allegiance with one of the following groups; Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral. This Allegiance becomes part of the game state. A player that has stated an Allegiance to a group shall be said to be a “member” of the group.

Players that have not publicly stated an Allegiance are by default given the Allegiance of Other.

A player may freely change their Allegiance from Other to Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral by publicly stating their intention to change. This immediately changes the player’s Allegiance from Other to the group stated. A player may not change their Allegiance from Animal, Vegetable or Mineral to Other.

A player, whose Allegiance is not Other, may change their Allegiance by publicly petitioning a current member of the group they wish to enter. If the petition is accepted, that player’s Allegiance immediately changes to match that of the player they petitioned. If the petition is declined, the player’s Allegiance remains unchanged.

A player may be petitioned by another player. The petitioned player must either accept or reject the petition publicly.

A player may not petition any player who’s Allegiance matches their own.

Rule 110 (Mutable)

If at any time there is no Carmen Miranda Hat, one shall be given to a random player who is not a vegetable. The speaker shall use a verifiable randomizer of some sort to determine which player receives the Carmen Miranda Hat, and shall make said determination within three days of realizing no such hat exists.

If a Carmen Miranda Hat in the posession of any vegetable player is ever worn, that player gains five points and the hat ceases to exist

Rule 111 (Mutable)

If a player proposes a proposition that fails to pass, that player shall receive a Hat, the Pointed Cap of Shame.

If a player wearing a Pointed Cap of Shame proposes a proposition that passes, that player gains double the usual number of points and the Hat ceases to exist.

No player may possess more than one Pointed Cap of Shame at any time.

Rule 116 (Mutable)

The title Mad Hatter is awarded to the player with the most hats. Should multiple players have the same number of hats the player who has held this number for longest is awarded the title. Only one player may hold the title of Mad Hatter at a time, should a player other than the current Mad Hatter gain the most hats, the title is transferred. If no players have any hats, or it is impossible to determine who has held the greatest number of hats for longest, the title is removed from any possessor and not awarded until a qualifying player is available.

Rule 117 (Mutable)

There shall be items known as rocks. Whenever any player would receive any other item, but before the first gamestate update registering the player's receipt of said item, the player may declare "I got a rock" to instead receive one rock for each item they would normally have been given.

Rocks may be thrown, to throw a rock a player must post in bold "Throwing a rock at X" where X is another player. Throwing rocks is not nice and costs 5 points. The target of the rock has 10 posts, not counting posts by the player throwing the rock, to post in bold 'Hah! You Missed me!. SHould they fail to do this any Hat they are Wearing is knocked from their head and destroyed.

Rule 118 (Mutable)

If at any time, a hat is transferred from a player with a higher post count(as listed by rpg.net at the time of transferral), that hat shall be defined as Too Big, and should the player with the lesser post count wear it, they shall be defined as Blind until they remove it.

Rule 120 (Mutable)

A player with an Allegiance that is not Other may change their Allegiance to another non-Other Allegiance with no current members. The player may do so by stating "I abandon X and become Y", where X is their current Allegiance and Y is the Allegiance they wish to join. Abandoning an Allegiance thusly is fickle and costs the player 10 points.

Rule 121 (Mutable)

A player with an Allegiance that is not Other may determine what entity of that Allegiance they represent. A player's Representation is modifier to an identity. A player may have only on Representation, and no two members of the same Allegiance may share a Representation.

A player's Representation ceases to exist when the player changes Allegiance, and the player may choose a new Representation appropriate to their new Allegiance.

For example, a member of Animal may have a Representation of shark or bear, while a member of Vegetable may have a Representation of kumquat or kudzu. These are merely examples and should not represent limitations on Representations.

Rule 122 (Mutable)

There exist offices. Offices may be held by players, the number and type of office a player holds is part of the gamestate. On enactment of this proposal, all players will hold no offices.

An office comprises three parts: Requirements, A Title and a Hat. Multiple players may hold an office unless the details of the office dictate otherwise. Any player who meets the requirements of an office is immediately awarded the title and the hat. Requirements may be anything that the speaker believes may be reasonably enforced within the game. When proposing an office, requirements, title and hat must all be clearly defined. Should a player no longer meet the requirements the office and associated hat and title are stripped from the player.

Rule 123 (Mutable)

There is an office of Doctor of Cubism. Any player who possesses a time cube meets the requirements of this office, and shall be awarded the Hat of Educated Stupid and the title of Doctor of Cubism.

Rule 125 (Mutable)

All propositions will have one of four states: Outstanding, Pretty Nice, Okay, and Pants. The Speaker shall, at the time of presenting a proposal, determine its state.

A player may publicly petition the Speaker to assign a proposition a particular state when proposing it. The Speaker is not obligated to accept said petition except in accordance with any other rules or conditions that may be set.

Rule 126 (Mutable)

A proposal is automatically considered 'Outstanding' if it contains at least three of the following specified words in bold text:

  • Flagellation
  • Antibiotic
  • Mattress
  • Manufacturing
  • Vagina
  • Crisp
  • Stumble
  • Integral
  • Nintendo
  • Stomach
  • Wikipedia
  • Library
  • Clue
  • Mustard
  • Liverpool
  • Big
  • Genius
  • Sanitiser
  • Battlefield
  • Monkey
  • Penguin
  • Outstanding

Local variant spellings are acceptable for each of these words. The contents of this list shall be a part of the game state.

It is integral that these words must be used properly in sentences within the text of the proposition. A proposition that merely includes random words from the list herein shall not automatically qualify as Outstanding. The Speaker shall have authority to determine whether the words are used properly, and may call the proposing player a silly monkey if they are not.

Rule 127 (Mutable)

If a proposal with a state of Outstanding is passed, the player who created the proposal is awarded 1 point, after any other changes to their point value have occurred.

Rule 128 (Mutable)

There is an Office for each non-Other Allegiance, the Khan of X, where X is the Allegiance in question. If an Allegiance has more than two members, one member may at any time publicly petition the Allegiance's membership to accept that member as Khan. Should the Allegiance's membership publicly vote in favor, by a simple majority, the player shall meet the requirements of the Office and be awarded the associated title and Furry Cap of Authority.

The Khan of an Allegiance may veto any other player's petition to join that Allegiance. The veto must be made publicly in this thread.

There may be no more than one Khan for each Allegiance. Should a Khan abandon the Allegiance, the player ceases to meet the requirements for the Office.

Rule 130 (Mutable)

There exist two classifications of hats: Super Special and Basically Boring. All hats are considered to be Basically Boring unless otherwise specified.

Basically Boring hats may be created at any time by any player at a cost of 8 points.

Super Special hats may not be created in this way, and must be acquired in ways described by the ruleset.

All hats thusfar mentioned in the ruleset are Super Special.

Rule 135 (Mutable)

A player may commit voter fraud by getting zombies to rise from the dead and stumble to the voting booth. To accomplish this, the player must publicly state the number of zombies that will be voting, whether the votes will be for or against, and which proposal they will be voting on (example: 4 zombies vote in favor of proposal 101). All rules regarding voting must be followed, except those that restrict voting to players only. Zombies will not vote on an empty stomach, so the player must feed each zombie that will be voting 7 points. Doing this can not bring the players point total to less than 0. Any zombie votes cast that would cause a players point total to do so will be disregard by the speaker. Zombie votes count toward reaching quorum on a proposal, regardless of any outstanding player votes.

Rule 137 (Mutable)

The gamestate shall include Entities. Entities shall be considered identical to players, except as follows:

Entities may not vote, except under conditions specifically described by the ruleset. Entities do not count toward quorum. Entities may not meet the requirements for Offices.

Certain actions may cause Entities to come under the control of players, either temporarily or permanently. Until created by a later rule, no such actions are part of the ruleset.

When an Entity is created, it has 10 points, no Allegiance and no Items, unless specified otherwise. Entities persist until rules or actions cause their existence to end.

Rule 139.143 (Mutable)

Proposals may begin "Proposal to amend a rule". This rule takes precedence over rules which forbid this

Rule 140 (Mutable)

All proposals must begin with "Proposal to create a rule" or "Proposal to alter the gamestate". The speaker must implement the proposal in accordance with this opening statement.

Rule 145 (Mutable)

For the purposes of this game the terms "proposition" and "proposal" shall be used interchangeably, being regarded as fully synonymous.

Rule 146 (Mutable)

A player may declare themselves inactive, in which case they no longer count towards quorum on proposals. The speaker and the speaker alone may declare another player inactive if they do not respond to a bolded, clearly visible post to the game thread questioning their attendance within 48 hours.

Rule 147 (Mutable)

There exists the Office of High Magistrate. If the High Magistrate believes he has noticed a breach of the game rules he may post a summary of the illegal situation and outline a suitable punishment. This punishment may only extend as far as the gamestate, for example removing items or offices from players. No player may be forced into actions outside the game. Once he has posted infringement and punishment to the game thread, the speaker must randomly select one player who is not the High Magistrate to act as arbitrator and decide if the judgement is both just and valid. If so, the punishment is meted out.

The High Magistrate has the requirements of possessing an item, the Mandate of Nomic Justice. It confers the title Lord Chief Justice, and the Hat Wig of Justice.

Rule 148 (Mutable)

There exists an item known as the Mandate of Nomic Justice. When this rule is passed, the Speaker posesses it, but any player who posesses the Mandate of Nomic Justice may give it away freely at any time. It may not be given to the Speaker, nor to any player with an office. If at any time the Speaker posesses the Mandate of Nomic Justice, e must give it away within a week.

Proposals to change the ownership of the Mandate of Nomic Justice may still give it to the speaker, or to a player with an office.
