The Olympian PL 10[edit]

The Olympian, visiting Paradise Island.
La Gladiadora de Oro.

Background[edit]

A strikingly tall woman of 6'4", Anastasia "Stacey" Sestak is the daughter of Alice Marston, formerly the world's top tennis player, and wrestler/stuntman Nick Sestak.

As a youth, Stacey was tall from an early age, and extremely awkward and gawky. In her late teens, she "filled out" in both physique and beauty. She became a superb athlete, and while Track and Field is her specialty, there are few sports she hasn't actively participated and excelled in. While sports gave her confidence, she remains shy and a bit awkward when outside her natural element.

Participating in the Olympic games of 1952 in Helsinki, 1956 in Melbourne, and 1960 in Rome, she's one of the foremost Olympic athletes of her time, having won 8 medals, including 4 golds and even one bronze medal in Rowing to go with her 7 in Track and Field events.

While always adhering to the ideals of good sportsmanship, Stacey's focus was often more on personal glory than anything else. Now in her thirties, while still an amazing athlete by ordinary standards, Olympic excellence is a game of inches and seconds, and older athletes inevitably lose out to the younger eventually. Stacey feared that she could no longer be competitive, and wondered what was next....

And then she saw Wonder Woman. The Amazon's emphasis on not just performing great feats, but encouraging and inspiring girls to perform their *own* great feats in turn inspired Stacey. She took on her own mission to promote Olympic ideals and inspire girls to take up sports.

Interested in history, particularly the history of the Olympics and women in sports, she now works as head coach and history teacher at a California girls' school while also appearing as The Olympian. While not a "crime fighter" per se, she has found herself involved in an improbable number of adventures, including several with the Challengers of the Unknown and the Sea Devils.

At one point, she was actually invited to Paradise Island, where she met Wonder Woman and Queen Hippolyta, and was presented with an amazing gift from the gods - specifically Hermes, patron deity of the Olympic Games, who imbued Stacey's 1960 gold medal (for the 800 meter run) with godly powers. When Stacey touches it, she gains godly Strength, Stamina, Agility, Speed, or Dexterity (but only one at a time.) Hermes also gave her a special golden victory wreath that gives her uncanny powers of awareness.

As The Olympian, Stacey wears a white Greek-inspired outfit, her gold medal, and a laurel wreath. She also carries a bag full of "shot puts" and "discus" crafted by an gadgetry-minded friend. She uses the discus to bonk people at long range, while the "shot puts" (actually much lighter than the real things) are more like trick grenades. While she didn't invent these gadgets, she's smart and skillful enough with tools to maintain her own equipment, at least.

Her identity as The Olympian is not at all secret... but she DOES have a secret identity, of sorts. Stacey always wants to test herself in athletic competitions, but not all of them are traditionally open to women. So she sometimes goes south of the border to wrestle as a masked luchadora, "La Gladiadora de Oro", in Mexico. As is traditional for masked luchadors, she wears her black and gold mask at all times - including when she's dressed up for a formal party, in a meeting, or just driving around Mexico. A startlingly large number of her "luchadora trips" end up with Stacey and her Mexican tag-team partner getting into epic battles with vampires, robots, Aztec mummies, and any number of other strange beings, all of whom also want to wrestle in formally-sanctioned matches for some reason.

As La Gladiadora de Oro, Stacey tries to keep her origins mysterious. While obviously a foreigner, she tries to portray herself as non-American (possibly hailing from Italy), speaking reasonable Spanish but accented English. Recently, she has found another reason for making more trips to Mexico - La Gladiadora de Oro has a boyfriend, a police detective she met while fighting mummies. Like everyone else in Mexico, he has never seen La Gladiadora's unmasked face.
