Trân Vân Olufemi[edit]

Birth Planet: Persephone Allegiance: not a fan of the Alliance
Height: 172 centimeters (5' 8") | Weight: 66 kilos (145 lbs) | Age: 32 standard years

While a Core-born Vietnamese-African, Olufemi is not unfamiliar with life on the Rim. He's a shady figure amongst the Triads, where he's known as 'the Black Spider'; not much is known about him, other than that he's a broker of information and many suspect he knows much more than any one person should be able to know.

He keeps a low profile, and recently hired on to a ship as a deckhand, a trade at which he was not especially skilled. The crew of that ship had no idea who he was, but kept him around because he always had a tidbit of information useful when they got into a scrape.

Appearance

A dark-skinned man with Asian features, Olufemi wears the rough clothing of a physical laborer, in nondescript beiges and browns. He's a small man with a wiry build who moves with the confidence of an athlete. His most striking feature is his penetrating steel-grey eyes, which would verge on unnerving if they weren't accompanied by a ready smile and the man's studied politeness. He sports high-quality worker's boots, which judging his wardrobe is where he spent all of his credits.

Not visible until he rolls up his sleeves or removes his shirt is an intricate lattice-work of colorful Triad tattoos covering his torso and forearms.

Olufemi keeps a low profile, only speaking when necessary and keeping to the corners. It's easy to forget he's there. When he does speak, it's with a dry wit and a certain intensity.

Distinctions[edit]

Mysterious Past d8
You weren’t born to the life you’re livin’ now. (Fight/Know/Sneak)

  • Gain 1 Plot Point when you roll a d4 instead of a d8.
  • Cortex Specter: Whenever anyone uses an information-based Asset against you, spend 1 PP to turn it into a No Data Found Complication of the same die rating.
  • Ghosts of Yesterday: Create a d8 Complication relating to your history to step up your Fight, Know, or Sneak for a scene. This Complication cannot be stepped back by spending PPs to activate Opportunities.

Intuitive d8
You don't just read minds. The way folk carry themselves, how they move, that’s the language you speak. (Focus/Influence/Notice)

  • Gain 1 Plot Point when you roll a d4 instead of a d8.
  • Now Is Not Your Time: When someone tries to attack you the first time in a scene, spend 1 PP to instead make them set the stakes against a Social + Influence intimidation Action. If you raise the stakes, they cannot attack you until you roll a jinx.
  • Take Measure: When you come into conflict with someone for the first time, you may attempt to size them up with a Mental + Know Action. Create a Sized Up d8 Asset if you succeed or take an Overconfident d8 Complication if you fail.

Mind Probe d8
You know things you shouldn’t. It’s in the heads of the people around you. (Focus/Influence/Notice)

  • Gain 1 Plot Point when you roll a d4 instead of a d8.
  • Secrets, Secrets: When you are in the presence of someone who is trying to keep a secret, spend 1 PP to discover the secret with a Mental + Know Action. If your Action fails, create or step up a Paranoid Complication.
  • Two Heads Are Better Than One: Once per scene, you may spend 1 PP to use the Skill of a Crewmember in the scene instead of your own. After the roll, take or step up a Complication to reflect their memories getting mixed up with your own.

Signature Assets[edit]

Triad Tattoos d6
There are more languages out there than just spoken words, and you’re wearin’ some on your skin. Those who’ve led hard enough lives, they’ll recognize the patterns, see the words, and know you for what you are. With the right audience, that’ll open doors, or shut mouths.

  • We Wanna Ask You a Few T'ings: When you meet a member of one of the Triads, take or step up a gang Complication to gain 1 PP.

Blackmail Material d6
Years of being a mind reading information broker have resulted in all manner of privileged information being stored in the mind of Olufemi.

Complications[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • Criminal groups mentioned in current Episode
  • Game rules for using Secrets, Secrets:
    • For consenting PCs when the 'secret' in question is character-related (as opposed to plot-related), there's no need to use the mechanics (this includes spending the PP).
    • Non-consenting PCs will either get to use the mechanics or have circumstances conspire to make Olufemi's reading attempt fail (without using any mechanics). Just like you can't roll Influence on each other without consenting to PvP mechanics, no reading each others minds without consenting to PvP mechanics.
    • For consenting PCs when the 'secret' in question is plot-related, we'll use the mechanics.
    • For GMCs, we'll use the mechanics, unless I say otherwise for whatever reason (e.g., because whatever Olufemi is trying to Read isn't plot-relevant, etc.).
  • Blue Hands research

It takes Trân a fair amount of time to screen out all of the cranks, crackpots, trolls, and paid agents, but eventually he's able to put together some sort of picture on the Blue Hands. They're agents of some sort of organization - not the Alliance it seems, probably corporate - who tend to show up in situations where high-end biological and/or psychiatric research is involved. There are no credible reports of anyone having any substantial contact with them; all of the credible reports are of those who had glancing contact and/or showed up in the aftermath of one of their visits. All of the reports have them traveling in pairs, wearing the same blue surgical gloves that the removed hand in the freezer has. They seem to be cleaners of some sort.

Shih and Will's survival of a violent confrontation with them seems to be the only report of such (though, of course, this is all self-reporting and so unreliable).
